He Pleases Pennsylvania Republicans by a Characteristic Speech. The event of the convention of republican elubs in Philadelplia was the address of Speaker Reed at the Academy of Music Tuesday night, ‘The applause was lougand hearty when Mr. eed arose tospeak. His address was largely sarcas- tically humorous and was keenly enjoyed by his hearers, who wore in thorough sympathy with him, His remarks were, in substance, as follows: “THE WICKED HOUSE.” “My friends: I thank you for your very cor- iat greeting, and it makes me feel sorry not to beable to say something worthy of it. Until very recently I had feared that I would not be able to be with you tonight. The wicked House has been very rampant for the last few days, and I did not know but what it would be necessary to stay with them—or without them. {Langhter.} But all that is happily over and I teel more responsive to your greetings tonight thau I would have this morning. [Laughter.] ut the republican party was born fighting. Its very best civic as well as military. It is of the very essence of its existence that it should do battle, for the republican party means the forward movement of the psople of the United States. [Applause.] It has never been necessary for the democrats to do any- thing. [Laughter.] We have just come from a scene which reminded men who were in Washington in the early days of the repub- lican party of the scenes which took piace there at the beginning of the war. On the democratic side of the House during the past week we have been treated to empty benches; democrats have not been visible. {Laughter.} I want you to understand the oc- cation which they thought demanded this magnideent uprising. The republican party, so far as the House of Representatives is con- cerned, kas done what we regard as great deeds. The democrats have proclaimed them very wicked deeds. Webave passed a» tariff bill which secured the American market to American people. [Applause.] Thet bill has been the subject of denunciation ou the part of the democrats almost too bitter to be put upon record. ‘THE TARIFF BILL. “According to them the bill and the prin- ciple it represents has carried desolation into every farm house in the country. It has cov- ered farms in the west three feet deep with Mortgages, aud yet the democratic members while that bill was being passed sat in their seats aud were counted. We passed another bill, This was o bill which they said was to ruim the principles of liberty. They said it meant ruin toa peaceable and lovely south. (Laughter.} It meant ruin to homes; it meant epotism, and yet they sat there ns sweet as sammer. No hegira, no departure, or, to use word more familiar ‘0 them, uo secossion. t laughter. } it when it came to seating a negro simply because he had been elected, the p osebosme side of the House arose as one man and de- parted. {Laughter.] But they have come back {renewed laughter). resembling the prodigal son, however, only im external appearance. (Laughter.} THE PEOPLE THE GREAT THING. “My friends, it is such little incidents as this which prevents the democrats from pointing with pride to the history of their party. It is that which makes them desolate in envy, vo- ciferous in expression of feeling when we spenk of the history of the United States for the past twenty-five years; for whenever we do it they Lave @ consciousness that we are pginting wit pride to the record of the republican party. [Applsuse and laughter.) “But, friends, the great thing in this world is the people. They make and unmake parties they create history; they govern and move, and the people of the United States are alone responsible for this government, aud it is their basiness to know and act up to the responsi- ty. TRE FALL ELECTIONS. {Laughter.] We to beat conservatism in its to beat fraud be- istory was made on the battle field— | THREW HIM OVERBOARD. Treatment of a Canadian Fisherman Wronged by a French Captain. A New York Herald special from St. Johns, N.F., says: A Frenchman named Bichel, owner and captain of the schooner Marie, plying be- tween St. Pierre, Miq., and the French schooner on entering the harbor of Port Au- basque about three weeks ago took away aud destroyed a net belonging toa fisherman of that place. The fisherman demanded payment therefor. Bichel refused and then threw the fisherman overboard. ‘The fisherman swam ashore and obtained a summons for Bichel, who ignored it,whereupon the magistrate issued a writ to attach the ves- | Sel and ordered Officer Wilcox to serve it. W1l- cox did so; still Bichel refused to obey and hoisted the French flag. Wilcox refused to leave the vessel until the damage was paid and Biche] set sail, taking Wilcox with him. After | carrying the ofiicer twenty miles to sea Bichel | ordered his crew to throw him overboard, but | Wilcox successfully resisted. Biche] refused the officer food or shelter. At length the | French war ship ,adre was met and her com- | mander ordered Wilcox to leuve, telling him that he had no authority to Interfere with French subjects on the French shore. Wilcox was arrested by the officeré of the Indre. ms writ and order papers takem from him, and he was put ashore at Bay St. George. Upon the magistrate hearing this be ordered H.M.S, Emerald to Bay St. George. {he Emerald re- fused to go and Bichel escaped. He was re- aptured on the 17th instaut, tried and sen- tenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labor, — iliac Wants to See the Books. In the cirenit court in Baltimore yesterday Judge Dennis heard argument on the applica- tion of Maj. Alexander Shaw in his suit | Elkins and others for the privilege of examin- ing the books of the Piedmont and Cumber- land Railroad Company. Maj. Shaw sued for an injunction to prevent the defendants from carrying out a lease of the Predmont and Cum- berland railroad by the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Company. Connsel for the de- fendants contended that Maj. Shaw, not being astockholder in the Piedmont and Cumber- land road. lind no right to see the books aud also that it was the books #nd proceedings of the West Virginia Central and Pittsbury that would show the facts about the lease and not the books of the other road. Jndge Pcunis held the question under cousideratiou, ae ae Robert Ray Hamilton’s Will. Owing to the unusual circumstances under which Robert Ray Hamilton died it will be necessary to have the strougest possible evi- | dence of his death before the will can be pro- bated. Steps are being taken to procure affi- davits from all who saw aud rocoguized the body of the drowned man, so that the proof on this point will be absolutely convincing. ‘The executors intend to prevent, as fur as possible, any future attempt at an imitation of the Tichborne claimant game by somo enterpris- ing adventurer, Gen. Schuyler Hamilton is anxious that, if possibie, his sou’s romaine should rest beside those of his mother in the family plot in Greenwood Cometery. ‘ How Is Yorn Cunor Swift's Specific is the great devtloper of delicate children.
