THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., FRIDAY, MAY 9, 1890. ? The Foremost Cocoa of Europe, The Coming One of America. UNLIKE TEA & COFFEE— @00D FOR THE NERVES. The claims of cocoa as a useful article of diet are stead- ily winning recognition. Un- like tea and coffee, it is not only a stimulant but a nour- isher; and it has the great ad- vantage of leaving no narcotic effects. Hence it is adapted VanHouten’s Cocoa “BEST&GOES FARTHEST” to general use. The strong may take it with pleasure, and the weak with impuniiy. Ba-Vaw Hovren’s Cocoa (“once tried, ") leaves no injurious effects on the nervous system. Several appeal whisky cases in which at- tachments were issued came before the Police Court yesterday, among them those of John Leonard and Patrick Shugrue, The former was represented by Mr. Cahill and the latter by Mr. Closs, The Shugrue case was first called, the amount to be collected being $105 for au unlicensed bar. Mr. Closs asked for a suspension of sentence on the grounds that his client had abandoned the liquor business and was now in the employ of the District govern- ment. Mr. Closs explained that the case came back from the Criminal Court because of the failure of the defendant to pay the clerk's fee, 5, which be thought the court had no right to exact. Judge Miller doubted his right to suspend sentence after the case had been remanded, The judge said he would like to hear authori- ties on that point and for that purpose the caso went over until Tuesday. IN THE LEONARD CASE Mr. Cahill stated a different reason for his mo- tion. He said that after the case was appealed hisclient went on two occasions to pay his docket fee to the clerk, but the papers im the ease had not reached there, ‘this peroety caused a discussion as to the sending of appeal papers to the other court and Jud @ Miller made a rule requiring the clerk to hereafter send the papers up within five days after con- viction. After a further discussion this case also went over until Tuesday. Wm. T. Rockhold was charged with having violated the Sunday law at the Syracuse House, on Pennsylvania avenue, and Mr. Cahill at- tacked the information on technical grounds, The court sustained bis motion to quash and Mr. Cahill walked out of court with his client, Messrs. Crosby & Tenney of the National Hotel were charged with a violation of the same law, and Mr. Mills Dean obtained a con- tinuance until next Tuesday. Knights ot of Honor. The regular session of National Lodge, No. 642, K. of H., last evening was rendered especially pleasant by the presentation of a floral star, baving six points and formed of rare red, yellow and white roses, to Worthy Dictator J.
