Some time ago, when work was slack, the foreman suspended three of the men. Last week he hired others in their places. The rest of the employes objected to this and asked that the oid hands be reinstated, as they were skilled workmen and were suspended solely because there was not enough work to keep them going. The company refused and the matter was referred to the district executive board of the Knights of Labor. This body held two consultations with the superintendents, but failed to arrive at an agreement and the men were ordered to quit work at 10 o'clock today. He was eighty-six years old and had many friends in this city, Mr. Trook was born in Virginia in 1804, and resided there until 1830, when he received an appointment in the Post Office de- tment under the administration of President jackson and moved to thiscity, which has been his home ever since. During a quarter of a century he occupied various positions in that department. His death, occurring at an early hour this morning, was peaceful and painless. Three colored women, Sadie Gibson, Lillie Ross and Mary alias “Big” Francis, were ar- raigned in the Police Court this morning as vagrants. Policemen Ellis, Nelson and Ceinar were the prosecuting witnesses and gave a bad account of the actions of the women, who live about Nailor’s alley and 13'¢ street. Judge Miller gave them sixty days each on the farm. Ida Mitchell, another of the same kind who was still drunk, got ninety days, Kate Bar- clay, Kate Rainey and Kate Colbert, the latter colored, were given homes at the farm for two months. Ellen Farrell and Jennie Reed, col- ored, got similar sentences. pier ae-- sen Location of the Lafayette Monument. To the Editor of Tue Evextxa Stan: It appears a little singular that all who have thus far spoken upon the question of the loca- tion of the Lafayette statue should agree that the Jackson statue should be removed to some other point, and it would be more singular if all did not agree to the impropriety—the abso- jute blunder—of placing the former in the loca- tion designated for it, and now being prepared, near the sidewalk on the south and center of the square now adorned by the latter. The Jackson statue should not be removed. It was the first erected in this city and, indeed, is the first of its kind ever erected anywhere (Clark Mills having solved the problem of equilibrium), and the park in which omer many for years been known and has been called *Jack- son square.” If there is to be any change let it bein the name of the square, placing the statue of America’s friend in some appropriate location to be named for him, thus leaving that of the “old hero” undisturbed in the spot so long honored by its presence. It may not be possible to effect ge in the present ar- rangement, but if it should the suggestion is ventured that there could be no more appro- Priate spot in Washington than the center of the circle south of the ‘White House,” under the shadow of the Washington Monument, changing the name of the “White Lot” to that of “Lafayette Park.” REsIpENT. —_—__ Real Estate Matters, R.
