Secret Session—No Action Taken, Senators Call and Quay ha having returned from Florida the Senate went into executive session at the close of the morning hour yesterday to consider the nominations of Judge Swayne ‘and Attorney Stripling of the northern district of Florida, These nominations were under consideration by the committee on judiciary several months upon charges preferred by the Senators from that state. They were, it is understood, to the effect that Judge Swayne was not a bona fide resident of the state, and that both the nominees con- ducted their offices in a partisan and non- judicial manner, Yesterday confirmation of the nominations was urged by Senator Ed- munds, chairman of the judiciary committee; by Messrs, Hoar and Wilson cf lows, members of the committer, and by Senators Quay, Spooner and Chand- ler, but no action was t A SENSATIO L STORY. A Report About the Origin of the Tracy Fire Generally Discredited, The New York Star this morning printed a story to the effect that the originator of the Tracy fire had been discovered in the person of Bridget Sweeney, the old Irish servant of the family. The Star says that there are well sustained rumors that Bridget Sweeney has confessed that early on the morning of the disaster sho poured coal oil over the dining room paneling and as far up the stairs as her stock of oil would go; that she then lighted the parlor gas, lighted the coal oil and started at once for church. When the fire bells rang out it is stated she was just entering church and she exclaimed, without having any intimation of the reason for the alarm: “My God, that’s our house!” The Star state] that ever since the fire Bridget had been ~~ under surveillance by the police and has en under such sur- yeillance since she went to Brooklyn, NOT CREDITED HERE, The story is generally discredited here, Mr. Raymond, private secretary to Mr. Tracy, who is now in Brooklyn, says that he does not think there is anythiag in it; that Bridget has 1 living for some time with Mrs. Gra niece of the Secretary, in New York. Lieut, Mason, the Secretary's naval secretary, said: “That story has been brought out before. I do not think there is any truth in it. Bridget is about half-witted and after the fire she made all sorts of statements, being almost crazod by the calamity. She was paid off shortly after the fire and went at once to New Y. ork and has since then been out of the Se Ido not know anything concerning her pres- ent whereabouts,” WHAT MEMEERS OF THE FANTLY SAY. Gen. Catlin, Secretary Tracy's brother-in- law, and Mrs. Graves, his neice, were inter- viewed by a New York Siar reporter in Brook- lyn last evening and discredited the report. “Why.” said Mrs, Graves, “Bridget was here with us until a week ago, when she was taken ill and went to her [sister's honse in | Greenpoint. Oh, no; itconld not have been Bridget. Why, when uncle was here last end saw Bridget the sight of her recalled such sad memories that he cried as if his heart would break, No; Bridget conld not have done it. She was at church at the time. She had been with the family for many years and was a good honest soul.” The Brooklyn police officials said they re- ceived no information of the case and no re- quest to keep Bridget Sweeney under surveil- lance, * ——»——___ A KENTUCKY TRAGEDY, The President Remits a Fine Under Peculiar Circumstances, The President today re remitted the $100 fine imposed on James C. The List of Dead Will Probably Not Exceed 150, Lovrsvitie, March 29.—The situati in the devastated district is unchanged. The great center of interest is still at the pile of debris that represents what was once the four storied Falls City Hell, In the thorongh- fares leading into Market street near the scone of the great disaster thonsands of persons are standing untiringly watching the devoted band of laborers removing the debrie bit by bit in the hope of uncovering the muti- lated form of a victim, ‘The ruins were illumi+ nated all night bya number of locomotive | headlights, placed so as to shed a flood of brile liancy into the pit that has been driven down through the conglomerated mass of brokem brick, splintered beams and twisted iron. Tuside the ropes the gray-cloaked sentinele of the Loyal Legion keep guard with the faggod-out police, As each body is taken Up from beneath the covering of debris and ie carried down the hoap to the waiting stretcher half-suppressed cheers go up from the crowd, This is the average half-hourly occurrence. THE SCENE AT TRE MOROUE. After the body is placed ona stretcher and covered over reverently it is taken to the ime provised morgue in Buckley's saloon across the street, where Coroner Miller and his assistants receive it, Up tothe present hour eighty-six, bodies have been taken from the Falls chy Hail and the cellar at 1Sth and Magazine streets. It is the genoral belief that there are at least forty more bodies in the dancing hall ruins, The latest and most intelligent estimate of the total number of the dead throughout the city will not exceed 150 persona, This is cares ful and fairly accurate. At 9 o'clock the last body was removed from the ruins of Virgil & Co.'s cigar store next to the Louisville Hotel, It was that of Mary Mc- Bride, who in life was a chamber maid at the hotel. Her remains were sadly soiled and mus tilated by the enormous weight of debris from abow This swells the list of dead in the cigar store to ten, The las: man taken out was the Chicago trave eling man, J, D, Hathaway, who met his death while lighting a cigar in the little place, It is believed that all of the dead, save in the dancing hall, have been found, and the estimate given above is nearly core rect. There is but little sensational feeling at- tached to the discovery of the bodies, as in the main they are those of people who were not generally known in the community, being working people and others of a retired station A MODERATE VIEW, The Masonic committee has wired the fol= lowing to Leander Burdick, grand master, at Toledo, Ohio: From what we can gather there are about 400 houses destroyed. Three hundred persons are injured but still alive, of whom 20 per cent will probably die from their injuries, One hundred and twenty five are now dead. The citizens seem dee sirous of caring for their own dead and ime jnred. Only one lodge room was destroyed, but no lives were lost, As far as known only one Mason was injured, and he not dangers ously, Signed Levi C. Goodale, deputy mas- ter; Jacob H, Bromwell, G. R.
