2 THE EVENING STAR: SOCIAL MATTERS. Wanamake: rs Cabinet Dinner— Teas and Receptions, Mr. The Postmaster General and Mrs. Wana- maker gave a state dinner last evening in honor of the President and Mrs. Harrison. the Vice President and Mrs. Morton, the cabinet minivters and their wives and other invited ts. The table made as pretty a picture, in form and decoration, as one could possibly imagine. ‘The table was round and the artic. tic decorations were in wnite and green. The centerpiece was a mass of French white lilacs im an oval vase, which rested Ye & silver mmmed mirror. About this, t upon the eloth, was laid a circle of cut b ew of the valley and outside of that acircle of maiden hair ferns. Around the table were four high vases filled with Marguerites and lilies of the valley fringed with ferns, Across the cloth were strewn fronds of fern, and the cloth below the board was festooned with asparagus vines. The jets and boutonniers were composed of white violets and lillies of the valley, and the former were tied with white rib- bons. The white tapers burned in silver candelabra under white shades. There were no wine glasses on the table. The elabo- rate menu was served without liquers. The company proceeded to the dining room in the ——— order: The President escorted Mrs, Wanamaker and the Postmaster General Mrs. Harrison. The Vice President gave bisarm to Mre. Platt and Mrs. Morton was taken out by Chief Justice Fuller. The Speaker of the House walked with Mrs. Miller, wife of the At- — General, and ex-Senator T. C. Platt was assigned the care of Mra. Fuller. Secre- tary Windom walked with Mrs. Keed, Attorney General Miller with Miss Ida Thompson, Secre- Tracy with Mrs. Hale, Secretary Noble wth Mrs. Rusk, Secretary Rusk with Mrs, Tracy, Senator Hale with Mra. Windom, Mr. Joba W. Thompson with Mrs. Noble, and the two guests of the family, Mra, Wm. H. Brown of New York and Mrs. Rodman Wanamaker of Philadelphia, walked together. Soft music by a hidden orchestra was played during the ser- vice of the dinner, and afterward there was a delightful musicale for the dinner guesta. No after dinner company was invited for the even- mug. Mra. Wanamaker wore a a prin- cease dinner dress of silver silk, em- broidered with pearls. Mrs, cetse wal ara biue toilet of silk and tulle. and Mrs, Rodman Wanamaker was daintily attired in white faiile. ‘Teas were in process all over the city yester- day. One of the gayest was that given by Mrs. Tyler of I street in honor of her guest, Miss Barnes. The hostess stood within the heavily curtained doors of her first arawing room to receive her guests, with a Japanese screen at ber back and Miss Barnesat her side. Mrs. Tyler was im a becoming toilet of white silk anze, embroidered in wild flower bouquets in Jieate colors. Miss Barnes, who is a graciou: and a gracefal girl, was in & demure gown of brown silk, with some changeable purple lights upon it and some paneis of brown velvet were im the drapery. ‘Ihe bodice was cut out in a Lady Jane Gray pattern. Mrs. Gould, in a rich gown of wine colored velvet and lace, made and poured tea in the drawing room. In the ‘second room Mrs. Barney, in a toilet of white embroidered mule, pre- sided over a small table where a sherry service was spread. Mrs. Dr. Loring and Mrs. John A. iodgers presided in the dining room, where a superb collation was spread. The rooms were softly lighted by @ number of shaded lamps. Mrs. Isaac Henderson of New York and her daughter. Mra. Carbaugh, gave one of the most eujoyable teas of the season yesterday at their home, No. 1612 Rhode Island avenue, from 4to7. The suite of rooms were lighted with lamps and graced with cut flowers. tall lies and fragrant roses, and a few musi- cians im the second drawing room Gilead the house with music. Mrs, Henderson received her guests atthe door of the first drawing room ina tasteful toilet of white ottoman silk shaded by black thread lace. Beside her stood Mrs. Carbaugh in a pretty gown of white embroidered mall, with fuil sleeves of polka-dotted white net. Miss Harriott Hutchinson, in a gay dress of crimson silk aud black uncut velvet was a helpful and charming assistant to the hostesses. Mrs. Frost | wore a dress of wood brown silk. Mrs, Frey, who | i# a sister of Mra. Henderson, was in black net and lace, very effectively worn, and she pre- sided over the coffee. Miss Edith Soule. in blue tulle, served the punch; Miss Gouverneur, in a blue gray toilet, was oue of the hostesses, and Mrs. Mackay of New York, who is a guest of the house, attired in red silk, was introduced to the guests, Atte: hot oysters and conf had @ center piece of La France roves and was lighted with candies capped by Persian shades. Mrs, and the Misses Preston extended their usual Friday afternoon into a charming tea yesterday. Dr. and Mrs. Kindleberger entertained a host of their fricnds at @ tea yesterday afternoon, and Mrs. Leech also gave a tea. Mra. Senator Aldrich gave a beautifal tea yesterday at her rewidence, No. 912 19th street, to introduce her beautiful and accomplished daughter.
