BEVERIDGR, Bo, 1009 PA, AVE. 3.W. THEY RUN OFF, LEAVING THEIR GHASTLY PLUN- 8. THE MUSIC HALL DEDICATED, Its Opening Signalized by a Notable Gathering and a Brilliant Concert. A more brilliant and in every way auspicious dedication to musical uses could not be wished for any new auditorium than last evening was given the just completed Lincoln music ball, at the corner of 9th and D streets, The great Boston symphony orchestra, with ite new conductor, Mr. Arthur Nikisch, and ao very large list of distinguished artiste united in giving « concert which for variety and excveding interest has scarcely been equaled in Washington, It was listened to by an audience that filled the hall with the best and fairest that Washington culture and Social distinction can marshal, while over it all hovered the benison of sweet charity, for to the Children’s hospital are to go the receipts which have accrued from the untiring efforts of Mrs. Jeanette M. Thurber and the other special patronesses, so amply seconded the kindly and generous promptings of W: ton soc All these things combined render the occasion not only a pleasure to those who delight in the brilliancy and anime- tion that such a gathering as last evening's has for the eye, but a refined enjoyment to those of musical sensibilities which touched the hearers at many new points, The beauties of the new auditorium in de signand finish have already been described in ‘THE Stax; 80 it is sufficient to say that the still more important matter of the acoustic quali- ties is equally satisfactory, There is, however, no accommodation for the orchestra coms a sort of recess upon the stage formed by @ “box” scene, which naturally absorbs mach of the tone and which gives a carious effect of distance to the most sonorous passages, But nothing is blurred in the auditorium and the most delicate refinements of the orchestral playing were clearly brought to the listeners, ‘he soloists are even more favored by the ar- chitect’s success. The program at this unique concert was of re length. It included solos by Miss Marie Jecca of Washington—her first concert per- formance since her return from Eur by distinguished members of the faculty of the National conservatory of music of New York; Mr. Raphael Josef, piano; Mr. Leopold Lich- tenberg, violin; Mr. Victor Herbert, cello; Miss Adele Margulies, piano, and Mr, Th 4 Manoury, the director of the vocal department, baritone, 1t was his initial appearance in this country. ht back to her Washi Miss Decca bro friends a delightful voice, admirably trained ip the best school of vocalism, as she well showed in the crucial aria from the “Magic Flute.” It is strong, flexible, and in its upper register es- pecially of excelient quality, Miss Decca sang er fioriture aria with an abundance of flexi- bility, grace, and sure command of its diffi- culties, She was several times recalled and was made recipient of a huge basket of roses, Upon Mr. Joseffy and his transcendent com- mand of piano technique there is probably no more of praise to be lavished than he bas al- ready received. He played the almost unthink- able difficulties of the Liszt concerto with something apparently akin to ease, and he put into ita full measure of poetic fervor and vitality. Mr. Manoury in choosing two characteristic arias by the two most distinguished modern French composers deserves much thanks; they were both of exceeding interest and beauty. He himself is d of a baritone of beau- tiful quality, yet somewhat lacking in variety and color. Mr. Lichtenberg gave an extremely satisfac- tory periormance of the last movements of the great Mendelssohn violin concerto. Mr. Herbert, perhaps wisely, omitted the andante from his suite and played only the tarantelie, with an easy, off-hand vigor which would have brought him an encore bed he choscn to take it. Mention ought not to be omitted of the interesting duo for the pianos by Saint Salus, a rare novelty in concert pro- grams, which was as interesting as it was wel- come at the hands of two so eminently com- petent players as Mr. Joseffy and Miss Mar- gulies, performance of the orchestra itself The unde~ its new conductor was of even more interest, perhaps, than the ndid contribu- tions of the soloists. Mr. N: h in the brief time since he has had charge of this remark- able organization has set it into new courses which have raised a storm of discussion in musical Boston, extending even to the musical people of New York and elsewhere in its con- cert tour, There Aron pt number in last even- ing’s program which showed in the plainest ro bad the revolutionary ideas which Mr, Nikisch has put into practice in bis condueting —it is in compositions of the classical Beethoven's especially, whore they are evident—and the four orchestral selections last evening were all distinctiviey modern. But there was, Devertheless, abundant opportunity to observe the attitude of Mr, Nikisch toward the See ae ees of the musical composition he hand, entirely different, it may be said, from - that of Mr. Gericke, whose services in estab- lishing the marvelous technical perfection of the Boston orchestra have been so great, Mr. Nikisch seeks to bring out the import of each strongly marked phrase given to a instrument, to a each touch of char- acteristic tone quality that imparts « passing color effect. The gorgeous bewuties of Wag- ner's “Meistersinger” Vorspiel under _ Nikische’s baton were an epitome of all that is best in his conducting. hey were givenan exposition affluent with poetic fancy as well as with intellectual vigor. Itis one of the few portions of Wagner's work that tell for as much on the concert stage a8 in a place; for ite marvelous variety of estral color, its almost pictorial contrasts of majestio dignity, exquisite tenderness aud fiery passion, and, above all, ite ravishing melodic bea enable it to stand against any overture “absolute music” ever penned, THE CAVALRY CELEBRATE. They Partake of An Oyster Roast on Their First Anniversary. Troop “A” of the District national guard cele- brated the first anniversary of its existence yesterday evening, and it did it in true cavairy style, Shortly after 4 p.m. the troop assembled in the ellipse south of the White House and at about 4:15 rode up 15th street to Pennsylvania the 14th street hill had been climbed Capt, Bar- bour gave the order, “Gallop,” and a went the combinations of horse and man blue, yellow and steel as hard as they could tear, waking Mount Pleasant out of its som and giving some folks alongthe road an um comfortable idea that there was going to bea conflict somewhere in the ate vicinity within a little while, A number of the civilian friends were at the club house to receive them, and the fires, om i i s & i Ht Fie
