RAL T SU RhogEQUEESTORAL wow xpwaxp, L. DENT, Mk, The beet THE BASE BALL OUTLOOK. No Amalgamation of the Association | Articles ‘That May Lead to the Arrest and the Brotherhood. For a while it looked ai as 3 though the brother- hood and the crippled American association would amalgamate and go into the base bail field next season with twelve clubs instead of eight. In this view it looked rather squally for the league, for the combination would have been a strong one. The scheme was proposed by the association, which was left in a very tottering condition by the retreat of Brooklyn and Cincinnati, and it did seem as though the players were urging them on. What their motive could have been is but a surmise, as there were no solid benefits to be gained by misrepresentation. It seems now, however, that the brotherhood does not want amalga- mation. The players may have thought to frighten the league by a bluff of joining hands with the association, but it i: egg @ mystery what such a move would prod Tim Keefe, secretary of of the brotherhood, says: “I don't see what use the association clubs would be to us, If we took them in we would only have to make a twelve-club re that and that would make so many tail-enders the draw on the guarantee fund would be by far too great. For that reason I should cer- tainly be against such a move. All the talk about consolidating the two organizations is being done by the American association people and not by the brotherhood.” ANSON I8 QUOTED today in the Philadelphia Inquirer on the sub- ject of the brotherhood tee fund: “I think it is all bosh. What is 40,000 or 360,000 as a guarantee fund for such an under- taking? But why should there be a necessity for a guarantee fand? The gives no guarantee because everybody knows that it = its players whee i school keeps or not, we all know that if the brotherhood does noe tanks the money the players won't be paid, Ispeak my honest convictions when I say that if anybody has put up money for the brotherhood he is very foolish, because I don't think it worth a cent on the dollar. THERE I8 SOME MISAPPREHENSION here with reference to the signing of Wilmot by Anson. There are some who are of the opinion, in the absence of an explanation, that Anson signed him for Wi: ton, just as Ned Hanlon is traveling about signing men for various brotherhood teams, It now appears, however, that Wilmot is tobe a oan hereafter, for he was released by Hewett to Spalding. The figure is not stated. WILL PLAY WITH THE BRUTHERHOOD. President Ward of the brotherhood of base ball players informed a New York reporter Saturday night that he succeeded in obtaining the signatures of Beckley of the Pittsburg — and Weyhing of the ola Athletic team to lay with the » brotherhood the coming season, a with the Brooklyn team Pr with the o Pittsburg team. THE SNOW STORM IN EUROPE. 7,000 Men Open a Snow Blockaded Road for an Empress’ Train. The movements of royal personages in Europe last week were greatly hampered by the un- feeling and disrespectful weather, says the New York Sun's London correspondent, Austria and Hungary are underneath three fect of snow, and drifts have blocked the railroads and highways. In Vienna 5,000 laborers constantly at work have managed to keep the more im- portant thoroughfares reasonably clear, but the price of food has risen twenty to thirty per cent. Empress Elizabeth knew all about this, Uut for some inscrutable reason she suddenly expressed a wish to take a trip from her castle at Miramar to Viennaon Thursday. Nothing could have been more inconsiderate or less op- portune, but her wish was law, and the civil and military authorities took prompt measures toobey. The line from Miramar to Vienna was blocked, and every station was crowded with shivering, half-starving snowed-up ngers, Seven thousand soldicrs and rai way men were. however, set to work, and in six hours had cleared the line Loc esraeg pe allow the Passage of the imperial train. It proceeded very slowly, and the officials in charge were in constant dread of an accident. As the train passed through the various stations the people groaned and hooted the empress, peeemanly out of sheer envy at not being able to travel themselves. No attempt was made to keep the line open, and the empress alone benefited by the concentrated energy of 7,000 men. It is rumored thatthe empress had been sud- denly filled with an uncontrollable desire to per by the coffin of her deceased son. She a3 not yet recovered from the shock produced by Rudolph’s terrible death, and her mental and physical condition is such as to inspire anxiety. It is even asserted that she hates the sight of human beings, hides herself whenever strangers or friends approach, and prays for death. The dead prince's widow was on the way to Vienna, but could not get beyond Lux- embuarg, wl she is still snowed up. — 000 - THE FARMERS’ ALLIANCE. Revision of the Constitution and Con- solidation Effected. The farmers’ convention at St. Louis Satur- day closed up ita business and adjourned to meet on the second Tuesday in December, 1890, at Jacksonville, Fla. The day was devoted mainly to finishing the revision of the consti- tution and trying to smooth the way for con- solidation with the northern alliance. Terms were finally agreed upon, and Kansas and South Dakota go in at once, but the other states defer action until the matter can be submitted to the separate state alliances, What the terms of consolidation are have not transpired, The new constitution is the same as the old with the exception of a few verbal changes, One of the chief alterations is the striking out of the word “country” before the phrase “country mechanics.” This will enable a large number of mechanics in villages and cities who are Knights of Labor to join the organi- zation. Itis provided that negroes may be taken into the union at the option of the state organizations, but they cannot be made dele- gates to the national convention. Thename of the organization has been changed to the National farmers’ alliance and industrial union. Headquarters will be established here in Wash- ington. where the president, secretary and chairman of executive committee wiil transact business. A judiciary committce, which is practically a trial court, was appointed as follows: R. C, hae f of Mississtppl chaic- man; Isaac McCracken of Arkansas and Evan Jones of Texas, The executive committee is composed of G. W. McCune of Washington, D. A. Wardell of South Dakota, and J. F. Tillman, Tennessee. The business agents, who are ‘purchasi agents and look after the co-operative stores and other affairs of the order, have organized, and style themselves the states business agents’ association. J. B. Dines of St. Louis was clected president, W. H. Holland of Kentucky, vice president, and Oswald Wilson of New York, secretary. The Evolution Bquadrow’s Itinerary. Supposed bloody velins of of the Cronin tragedy have been discovered in Milwaukee. They are clothing thought to belong to the missing sus- pect, Cooney, and with them ina trunk were four blood-stained handkerchiefs, a number of photographs, and a bundle of letters. Capt. Schuettler of Chicago made the find, acting on an anonymous letter from Milwaukee calling attention to the fact that the suspicious articles | were in the possession of a Milwaukee express- man, James H. Mooney. Capt. Schuettler left Milwaukee yesterday, taking with him the letters and photographs, His destination could not be ascertained, and the inference was drawn that he had started to run down aclue furnished by the letters, following the dis- covery of Cronin’s body, Expressman Mooney was accosted by a cane at the union depot looking for Mg quiet boarding house. e stranger was taken to Mooney’s home and re- mained there a few days, but went off for a stroll one night with another stranger and has not since been seen, The boarder forgot to Fi a landlord, and never claimed the trunk. Mooneys broke open the trunk, and the rious circumstances have been a matter the neighborhood for some time. One of et then pictures in the album and Mooney’s description of the boarder both tally, it is said, with the missing Cooney. *eo-—_____ HOSTILE HALF-BREEDS. South Dakota Citizens Deterred from Entering the Sioux Reservation. There is great indignation and excitement in Pierre, 8.D., over the hostile and lawless action of the “‘squaw men,” and the half-breed dwel- lers of Fort Pierre toward Pierre citizens and strangers who happen to cross the river. Saturday, an aged gontleman, Judge Wal- dron, was notified by the vigilance committee to leave the reservation, and hostility to strangers, and especially Pierre citizens, is be- coming such that none venture across the river. These bulldozing tactics are carried on so that the half-breeds can control the situation upon the opening of the great Sioux reservation and thus obtain prestige over intending settlers, Pierre citizens say therefis no doubt thatthe government will have to interfere before long, as there isnow no law that can reach the in- habitants of the reservation, Serious threats have also been made by the “squaw men” against newspaper men and correspondents who dare to reveal the tea true state of atfairs. NOT ALL BLOODLESS. Dom P sdro Will Not Issue an Address to the te People. Asspocial dispatch from Lisbon saya that in an interview on board the Alagoas the ex-em- peror stated that he did not intend to issue a manifesto. He said: “I have no desire to busy myself longer with Brazilian affairs. I had no intercourse with the republican government.” The steamer Finance, Capt. Barker, from Brazilian ports, arrived in New York Saturday. Capt. Barker states that he first learned of the proclaiming of a republic on reaching Pernam- buco, Everything was quict at that place at the time of his leaving, November 17, On reaching Maranham he heard of a riot, in which six persons were killed and twenty others were wounded. The killed and wounded were all natives, A mob attacked the office of the Giobo, & newspaper of that place, the editor of which is Senor Duarte, a leading lawyer and citizen. No damage was done, however. On November 24, when he left Para, Capt. Barker states that all was quiet. Perfect order was maintained and the military were quiet and in harmony with the new government, Boston’s Firemen Were Burned. The first signs of the missing firemen in the Boston fire were found yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the ruins of the Ames building. The victims’ names were Brooks, Buckley, Locker and Murnane, All that was discovered was a skull and @ charred trunk, identification of which is impossible. The position of the body showed that the unfortunate man had been burned to death in one of the upper stories of the building and not crushed by falling walls as heretofore ore supposed. The Marlboro’ Lynching Disapproved. A correspondent writes to the Baltimore Sun from Upper Mariboro’, Md., as follows: ‘The people of Upper Marlboro’ and vicinity are in- dignant over the charge which has been made that they were interested in the lynching of Joe Vermillion. They knew nothing oi the affair and had no part in it. They are open in denouncing the act and are urging the law offi- cers to put the blame where it belongs. ‘There was no necessity for the act, because Vermil- lion was heavily ironed and’ in « strong cell. The people in this neighborhood do not fora moment justify Vermillion’s crime, but claim that those who burned the house occu- pied by-old Vermillion should also be brought to justice, as being equally as guilty as Joe Vermillion. It is said that the names of four of the lynching party have been given the ofi- cers and warrants will be issued for them,” see Sunol Said to Have Cost $45,000. Robert Bonner and his brother David left San Francisco Saturday for Los Angeles, Thougk Mr. Bonner did not say so in so many words he gave @ reportes to understand that the prico paid for Sunol was $45,000. Mr. Bonner at Port Costa said that he might let Maud 8. go into the hands of Budd Doble, who desired to take her to the coast. where he fully expected she would materially lower her record. Mr. Bonner will return next fall, before the rains set in, and see Sunol do her best, Did He Start the Minneapolis Fire? Charles 8. Ostram, until Friday night cashier and book keeper of the Pivneer Press’ Minne- apolis department, is suspected of having started the fire which burned the Zribune building Saturday night, November 30, in which seven men lost their lives. The charge made against Ostrum on Friday night was that he had stolen $2,200 of the funds of the Pioneer Press. He not only admitted his guilt but did what he could to help the company straighten out the books. The terrible rumor immediately fet abroad that he had deliberately set the ulding on fire to cover his peculations, He was confronted with the charge of arson and the grand jury will make a thorough investiga- tion of the matter. Ostrum, at the county jail yesterday, denied he had set the building on fire, althou; ugh he said most people would be- heve he did it under the circumstances, He claims he can prove an alibi, ——— ee ___ A Minister Accused of Murder.
