A rather interesting case has arisen in con- nection with a member of @ pensions medical board. Dr. Phil Roberts, a republican living in Richmond, Ky., on the 24th of July last re- signed his position on the examining medical board in that district, He asked that the resig- nation take effect at once, but in fact | it was not offic: accepted until | August 13. On the 5th of August he was elected | a member of the state senate after a close con- test, and it is stated that his election will be contested on the ground that it was a violation of the state law which prohibits the election of a man toa state who is an officer of the United States govern- ment. Dr. Roberts has written to Commissioner Raum in regard tothe matter, and the latter in his reply said that he did not believe that the election would be contested on that ground, itis seated that in the case of the United States agt Germaine the Supreme Court of the United States decided that civil surgeons appointed ya the commissioner of sions are not ered of the United where Mr. Lay is at present stationed as general of the United States. Mrs. Blaine will stay at home on ss of next week to receive callers after 4o'clock. The Seward mansion in which Secretary Blaine’s family is now settled, has not been altered as to the general plan of the rooms. In the front of the house, on the main floor, where Secretary Seward had two parlors, is now oue maguificent drawing room with only @ graceful archway to mark where the partition once stood. Secretary Seward had a red and a bine anda yellow room on this floor; the latter was also the library, as it is at present. The drawing room is furnished onacolor scheme of salmon tinta; the walls are hung in that color, and the upholstered Seraivere i is in brocade of that color, withsome searlet satin pieces in relief. The wood work and the mantels at either end of the room and the airy arching are a pearl white color. On the wale are rare and itifal paintings and engravings, the collection of many years in this country and in Europe. In the dining room, which is on the ground or entrance floor, there is, among others, a large painting by J. L. Guyot that was purchased by Mr. Blaine in Paris some years ago. The Secretary, as it is weil known, is an acknowledged connoisseur im art matters, and this picture is a credit to his taste. It isa picture of sheep in a sheep byre or fold, and 1s full of strong lines and ten- | der, pathetic coloring and expression. The dining room furmture is in Px ‘ished oak, the | walls are hung with crimaon ta etry, and the | ehairs are upholstered in red leather. The sideboard of oak is placed in an arched recess.
