Thousands viewed the remains of Jefferson Davis in the city hall in New Orleans yester- day. Countless and ceaseless was the throng that passed. Men, women and little children, tearful and sad, paid their tribute of respect to the man they loved. Detachments from the battalion of Washington Artillery and from the city police are still on duty and the most“ per- fect order is preserved. At 10 o'clock this morning the army of Tennessee sent a detach- ment of veterans to remain on duty the entire day. Many churches held memorial services, principally the Protestant Episcopal, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian. Bishop Gallaher of the Protestant Episcopal church, = will be in charge of the funeral, he wil ially aided by Dr. Markham, Treabets Father Hubert, Catholic, and Doctors ewe! and Martin, Protestant Episcopal. They were all confederate chaplains, Dr. Bakewell was sergeant of acompany, and Bishop Gallaher himself carried a et. It is the bishop’s intention to have the services take place on the broad portico of the city hall. Lafayette square stretches out in front, and many people could sey witness the rites, Asurpliced choir will the anthem ‘Though I ‘alk Trough the ley of the Shadow of Death,” by Sir Arthur Bullisas At the tomb the same choir will chant ‘Rock of Ages.” The body will be taken to the cemetery, a distance of about three miles, on a caisson, and the vast procession will walk allthe way. The will be of im- mense proportions. Even the benevolent so- cieties are commencing to announce that they will turn out. THE FINAL RESTING PLACE will not be determined until a family meeting is held. Many are inclined to think that Brier- field, Mr. Davis’ plantation on the Mississippi | 78! river near Vicksburg, will be the place chosen, as Joseph Emery Davis, a brother of the ex- president of the confederacy, is buried there, and Mr. Davis’ own wishes are tbe drapery to have been to that effect. A question arose in the minds of the Commissioners as to their power of accept- ing the offer without legislation. The matter was referred to Attorney Riddle for report, who says: “I think a municipal corporation has the power to buy or accept a donation of land for a school house site.
