Hennox, Cashier Evening Star Newspaper Company. Subscribed and sworn to before me this fourteenth day of October, A.D. 1889. JomN T. C. CLARK, Notary Public. ee The burning of Talmage’s tabernacle in Brooklyn yesterday pt away a unique church edifice. It hada larger seating capac- ity than any other in America belonging toa Protestant denomination. Five thousand per- sons could ce gathered within its walls, all com- fortably provided with pew-room, all seeing the preacher end able to hear his voice distinctly. Ita building marked a bold departure from the once iron-bound rules of ecclesiastical archi- tecture, its design belonging to no particular school, but having for its sole end the adapta- tion of the space to the needs of a modern church service, in which the sermon is a pre- dominant feature. Yesterday's fire will not daunt Talmage. He has been burned out be- fore; and the new home of the Tabernacle so- ciety, when built, will probably have all the ex- cellent qualities of the old one, with such ad- vantages added as an experience of several years may suggest. = ee New York's proposal to do away with secret divorce proceediugs by having every case tried in open court instead of before a referee has aroused a loud cry from society’s prudish half. And yet the plan works admirably in Massa- chusetts, It has wiped out there the blot of such scandalsas the Flack swindle, which do more in a few months to lower the moral tone of scommanity than the airing of all the in- odorous domestic broils which could be accom- plished in the free atmosphere of a court room in as many years, ——————————— The latest iconoclast is a “lady physician of extensive practice” who declares that spanking must be given up on account of its harmful ef- fect on children’s spines. Thus, one by one, the traditions of household management are swept away. One must not cuff ananghty boy's ears, for fear of breaking his drum; or lock him in a dark closet, because of the injurious influ- ence of twice-breathed air; or stand him with his face in a corner, lest it should hurt his vis- ion; or send him supperless to bed, out of re- gard for his digestion. The medical press is evidently subsidized in the interest of the small boy. It is time for parents to combine in defense of their inalienable rights. ———— While Henry George and Edward Bellamy are calling each other visionary, the world goes on wagging in the old-fashioned way, and wonders which of the two reformers is coming out of the controversy in the better shape. $$$ ‘There is the making of the nastiest judicial scandal of the era in the Cronin case just at its present stage, That “‘jury-fixing” has been goin: on in the interest of some of the accused parties, there seems little room for doubt, though precisely who is the person directly guiltgean be determined only by further in- vestigation. The experiences in the Cronin trial are furnishing weighty arguments fo the opponents of the jury system. The direct dis- credit attaches, however, to the modern method of selecting jurors rather than to the principle of trial by jury. Se The use of dogs in the German army as despatch-bearers suggests their possible em ployment in civil business as substitutes for the fleet-flooted messenger boy of the period. It is a strong recommendation for them that they don’t know how to play marbles. Souz Orponresez Ossenyations ‘MACTN TOSH weather. We'vegot the only genuine Coats in the city.
