Graceful Maneuvers Peculiar to the Order, a Formations Elaborated From Regular Army Exercises—Sword Practice Carried to Perfection—The Officers and Their Duties. ———>—_—_ The general public delights in nothing more thoroughly than it does ina parade of a mili- tary or semi-military nature. It may be @ great display of well- equipped troops or it may bea great display of Amazonians in some theatrical spectacle, both are attractive and neither find themselves without a crowd of ad- miring spectators. The arade of the Knights Weneptar during this week will afford the manenver-loving popu- lace a pleasure not often found even in this city of tine parades and much military, If there one thing that Knights Templar can do any better than an- other it is drill, a thou- sand of them move as ope man, and a sober, well-disciplined man at that. Templary is PRESENT. proud of its@rill and each year an increase in skill, even where before there seemed to be absolute per- fection of movement, Very methodical are the ‘Templars in most of their work and they are no less exact when they come down to handling ight of the com- mander, is used at @ re- view to designate the post of the commanding Officer. Markers are posted to show where it will be necessars forthe column to change direc- tion, so that the right fiank will be only six or eight yards from the re- viewing officer. When the number of com- manderies present will mit, as it does dur- g aconclave, divisions are formed and the com- manderies are maneu- REVERSE. vered into line or masses. When there are more than six com- manderies in line the reviewing ofticer does not pass down the line unless mounted or in a car- Triage, but no other officer, except the chief of staff, is permitted to use the conveyance. Each division salutes from in front of its center as the officer passes, after which the command- ‘ies pass fp review in quick time with swords at the “carry.” At an inspection the commanderies “open order” so t the emiment commander may pass between the front and rear ranks. When the inspecting commander is within one pace of a knight the knight brings his sword to “present,” and as the commander is exactly in front of him the knight turns the flat of the blade to the front; when the com- mander has passed he brings thé sword back tocarry. As soon “2h as the commander has completed his inspec- tion the rear rank closes up and the column awaits further orders, Distinetly Templar in their origin are such foot movements as re- snit in the forming of. crosses and trinngles. Asa practical military formation the cross is @ total failure, but the Templars make it one of the most showy of their many graceful ma~ neuvers, There are dif- erent kinds of crosses— the Greek, the passion, the Salem (double or triple passion) and others. The triangle is also a favorite move- 44, LIMBER, ment and spectacularly considered is very ef- their bright swords and to marching all over a parade ground. The foundation of this exactness is in the tactics of the United States arm y, and on this mathemat- ical substructure the Templars have built formations of many and interesting dese rip- tions—ancient in a few instances; modern and novel in others. There are two sets of move- ments in the Templar manual; one for use in the secrecy of the asy- lum, the other to be displayed to the public, Both are impressive when well executed, and they generally are done in such a manner that even the most critical have nothing to say. A rood deal of stress is id by Templar drill- masters on the words CARRY, preliminary to and explanatory of the words of command.” This gives time for prepuration, and is especially necessary when two or moré commanderies are drilling together for the first time. The vocabulary of drill terms is very sim- ilar to that in use by the military of today, varied only when necessary. ‘The “flank” 1s the endof aline or the side of a column; “echeion” refers to Jes or columns formed in rear of and at equal distance, in form of steps; a “platoon” is half a commandery, ex- clusive of the stundard guide; a “wing,” ac. cording to Upton, is the right or left division of an army, and in Knight Templary sig- nifies either half of the line; a “section” im- plies six men in line; a “pivot,” the center knight around whom the wheel is made. The words of com- mand for special evolu- tions include a few not heard among military men. but these are very SUPPORT. few because even the most complicated knightly movements are made up of a combination of simple tactics, One noticeable difference, of course, is found in the tities by which the officers and members; are addressed. ‘Those who have no distinctive | title are always spoken to or of as “sir knights” instead of “privates.” Thus at a con- clave the officer who corresponds to a commander-in-chief or general command- ing is the most eminent grand master of Knights Templar or the graad commander, All the a) remaining officers are i entitled to ptefix “very “f fective, The Thieves at Work.
