How the Great Lantern Parade of Wheelmen Will be Managed. TRE PROGRAM FOR TUNIGHT'S UNIQUE SPEC- TACLE—A THOUSAND BICYCLERS EXPECTED TO TURN OUT—EACH ILLUMINATED WEEEL TO GLIDE NOISELESSLY ALONG. Every effort has been made to the end that the cyclers’ parade tonight shail be one of tho est aflairs of its kind ever known. If the ations so far apparent are correct there will be fully one thousand wheeis in line, each adorned with two bobbing, glittering Chinese lanterns, and, judging from the parade that took place at the time of the Shepherd celebra- tion a year ago, when there were less than 300 wheels in line, the parade tonight will extend nearly over the line of march at one time. There will be, as stated, two Chinese lanterns on each wheel, besides the hub lamp. THE LANTERNS will be fastened to the handle bars by means of | long wires specially provided for the purpose. These wires will extend about two feet anda half ahead of the machines. The formation of the 5 will be somewhat unique, occupying the eutire width of tuc avenue. Candles are not to be lighted until the order | is given by the division commanders. Interesting Events Yesterday—No Races | Political—Murder Trial—Snake Stories, Today. The first day of the fall meeting of the Na- tional jockey club opened auspiciously at Ivy City yesterday. There was a large attendance, and the cold weather made heary wraps a necessity. The results of the first and second races were pub- lished in yesterday's Stan. Sam Doxey captured the third race of five furlongs in 1:04 The next race was the surprise of the day, Iceburg winning the Potomac stakes of one mile and a furlong in 2:01. Orifiamme was the favorite in the mile and a sixteenth event, and won in a walk in 1:51. The steeplechase proved to be another favor- ite race, and Elphin won iteasily. No time wus taken. There will be no races today, owing to the parade, but tomorrow they will continue as usual, a HOW NOT TO PLAY BALL The Exhibition Game of the Bean Eat- ers aud Senators. Leech, who was yesterday ap- pointed director of the mint, as stated in Tae Sran, is a District man, although his parent | Were from New York state, where his reiatives now reside. Mr, Leech was born in Washing- ton, December 9, 1950, His father, D. D. Leech, was well known as a men of learning and picty, Two of his brothers are ministers of tue Methodist church, one of them, Rev. S. V. Leech, being one of the most distinguished minisiers of the New York conference. Mr. Leech graduated from tue Columbia coilege in | 1869, taking the second honor in bis class. He also graduated in iaw from the National uni- versity of this District and was admitied to the bar in 1586. Upon the death of his father he was appointed in the Treasury department, upon the recommendation of Gen, Francis A. Waker. He entered the department at the owest grade of clerkship in 1369.
