CITY AND DISTRICT. 7 Tar Evexrxo Stan is everywhere recog- nized and admitted to be, in every quality, the leading and favorite newspaper of the National Capital, alike in the counting-room, the work- shop. and the family circle. Pretty much everybody in the District reads it regularly. It is therefore much the best advertising medium in the city; and, in proportion to circulation, its advertising rates ure aiso much the cheapest. A VICTORY AT LAST. How the Senators Won From the Giants Saturday—Other Games. The Senators won from New York on Satur- day by means of some good bunches of hits and the presence of a mascot in the shape of an ugly temper on the part of Captain Ewing, who distinguished himself ina disagreeable manner during the short space of time he played. The score was 9 to 5, the home team making all of their runs after the Giants had ceased scoring. The score cards contained the names of Ferson and Ebright, and Keefe and Ewing as batteries, but this was changed be- fore long. The visitors scored in the first on an error by Sweeny. a passed ball and a two-base hit by Roger Connor. ‘Then George Keefe took Ferson’s place, and al- though he was touched up in the second for four hits which, aided by a passed ball and Sweeny’s und Wise’s errors, enabled the visitors to score four times, he was very effective thereafter, and the five runs the men from Gotham had obtained were all they could get. The Senators got on to Timothy Keefe’s curves in the third and pounded him hard. Wilmot and Hoy went to first on balls and Sam Wise’s single filled the bases. Then Myers saved the day by making a beautiful two bagger to center. Two runs came in easily and Wise dashed for the plate, being saved only by being hit in the back by the ball Gore threw in. Morrill’s single hit en- bled Myews to score. Shoch hit safely but Morrill was forced by Ebright and the side soon went out. EWING EXPELLED. At this Ewing, who had been fined #50 and sent to the beuch in the second, expelled from the game, called Keefe out of the box, and in the fourth put Crane in aginst his will, Two runs were scored, giving the Statesmen a lead, aud after two men had been retired in the fifth Crane refused to go on. Ewing wanted to put Welch in the points, but Morrill inter; osed a ‘The game was stopped at this half an hour, while a phy- ‘rane’s leg, and Ewing. Mor- ill, and Umpire Curry had A TALKING MATCH. Curry had his way in the end and Crane was kept in the game, going to first base, Connor to third and Arthur Whitney to the box. He was effective, but the home team had luck enough to score three more runs, two in the ninth. Washington made 11 hits and 4 errors, end New York ¥ hits and 5 errors, Ewing attempted to kick on a decision of Curr: when he was celled out on strikes, and this cost him the $50 mentioned. Then he endeavored to show Curry other ways, as he expressed it, of robbing a man, and this cost him ~125 more. Parker, conductor of a freight train on the Baltimore and Potomac railroad, was in the Police Court Saturday charged by Sergeant Mulhall with obstructing the New Jer: avenue crossing. There were thirty cars there and the engine to the train. Sergeant Mulhall and Officer Proc- tor testitied that the train of which the defend- ant was conductor obstructed the crossing for thirteen minutes. The defendant testified that the engine could Bot back train on account of the grade. The train could not move ahead because it was locked by other care In answer to Mr. Shillington’s inquires de- fend said that the men at the crossings were peid to look after the gates and not to give sig- hals. Mr. Shillington said that the streets in that section are frequently blockaded, aud the rail- road is respon for it. Persons in South Washington, he said, are greatly incon- Yenienced by these obstructions. and he thought that the railroad should provide better facilities for their cars. He thought that in some of these cases it would be unjust to make the employes pay the fine. In this case he thought that the defendant might be warned and his personal bonds taken. Mr. Ferguson said that cs objected to such a course. je did not admit that there was a Violation of the law, and if that course was pur- sued he would have to appeal the case, Judge Miller in disposing of the charge said that this ordinance was intended to keep the Ptreets clear. The defendant, he held, had Violated the law, but under the Circumstances he was willing to ry 's personal bonds. Atter further discussion the defendant gave his personal bond a Saturday afternoon a wagon driven by Ed- ward Warren was n in another team, breaking the wagon and throwing Mrs, Warren out, dislocati n g her shoulder. # the Strongest, Dr. Price's € Ammonia, Line Baking Powder id only st. Jersey | The attention of the business public ts Invited with confidence to the superior advantages pre sented by THE WASHINGTON EVENING STAR as an express | advertising medium. The sworn statements of ite ally circulation, published from. week to week, taken in connection with the data given below, i+ lustrate in the most striking manner the steaay and rapid growth of the paper in circulation and influence. They also establish, beyond contro Versy, the fact that THE STAR is the best local ad- tertising medium, not oniy in the United States, Dut in the whole world! This claim is based and conceded on the fact that no city in any country ts 80 thoroughly covered by the regular circulation of ® single paper as is the city of Washington by that of Tus EVENine eZtent alone, but also on the char: tion. Not only is its local circul: and fuilest of any daily paper printed, in propor- on to population, but it is also the BEST, since the Paper does not merely go into the hands of the people of the District of Columbia asa body, but {nto their homes,—into the families of all condl- tions, and into those of the mi Well as the money-earning portion of the com- munity,—in @ much larger ratio than any daily journal that can be named. By reason of the fullness, freshness and re! ‘AR; and it does not rest on the r of ciroule- m the largest cucspending as bility of ite news, local, domestic and fore ic questiuns, and espe cially because of fis intelligent and effective de- Yotion to local interests. and its close attention te and particu. red, THE Stan ddmitted to be, ta avorite newspaper in the counting and the family circle. ive evidence on these powts ne Person can ask than that afforded by the table reulation theretu indi- rly shows the larly its laay members, are conc is everywhere recognized and every quality, the leading and of the National Capital, ali Toom, the work-—shoj More conclu munity to Whose interests it is so ste uifastly de- voted. It will be seen that, in the number of copies issued, every mouth in the year 1888 eho @ handsome increase over the corresponding month in each year given; and, as a further illus | ation on that point, it may be stated here that there bas been correspouding advance in the number of new uts printed during we year, The comparative figures for the four years last past are as follows: DAILY CLECULATION IN 1885-'R6-"87—"8S, 1883. Of the remainder, 4 daily average of 5,421 were sold at the ofice, ia the hotels and railway stations, etc., and on the streets, by newsboys, making 4 grand total average Within the District of 25,450 copies daily, leaving 4 daily average of 1,032 tw be sent w regular sub- scribers residing beyoud its limits, by mail, express, and railway trains. In addition to the 20,029 copies daily delivered at the homes of subscribers, a large proportion of the 3,421 otherwise disposed of in thecity is reg- ularly purchased by permaucut residents, living in lodgings, &c. (uot householders), while the resi- | due goes into the hands of transient visitors, from all parts of the counuy, who each year come to the National Capital in greater nuiibers and for longer periods, and who, furthermore, largely rep- Tesent the well-to-do and purchusiny portions of the communities to which hey respectively belong. ‘The last-named is class of readers aloue weil Worth reaching; but it is w the phenomenally large permauent local circulation of we paper, and especially w its unparaiicied hold upon we household aud family circle, that the attention of @dvertisers is particularly directed.
