The Number of Lives Lost in the Flood at Johnstown. SAD SCENES WHICH THE MORNING LIGHT BROUGUT TO VIEW—A DEVASTATED COUNTRY AND BUN- DREDS OF BODIES FLOATING IN THE WATERS— THE SAVED SUFFERING FROM WANT. Jouxstown, Pa., June 1.—The waters which overwhelmed this town yesterday, carrying death to hundreds and misery to thousands, are subsiding rapidly, but as yet it is imposs ble to obtain anything like exact information concerning the extent of the disaster that has visited this city and the district surround It is no exaggeration to say that there are mourners in every family. Thousands are missing; it is certain that hundreds have been lost, aud while many of those who are now missing and who are mourned as dead have doubtless been saved, the final death-roll will, beyond doubt, be of appalling length. It is impossible to describe briefly the suddenness with which the disaster came. A WARNING SOUND WAS BEARD at Conemaugh a few minutes before the rush of waters came, but it was attributed to some meteorological disturbance and no trouble was borrowed because of the thing unseen. As the low rumbling noise increased im volume, how- ever, and came nearer a suspicion of danger began to force itself even upon the bravest, which was increased to a certainty a few min- utes later when with a rush the mighty stream spread out in width and when there was no time to do anything to save themselves, Many of the unfortunates were WHIRLED INTO THE MIDST OF THE STREAM before they could turn around; men, women and children were struggling in the stream, andit is thought that many of them never reached Johustown, but onlya mile or two below. At Johnstown a similar scene was enacted, only ona much larger scale. The population is greater and the sweeping whirlpool rushed into a denser mass of humanity, The imagin- ation of the reader can better depict the spec- tacle than the writor can give it, It was a twi light of terror, and the gathering shade of evening closed in ON A PANORAMA OF HORRORS that has few parallels in the history of casual- thes. Even the thought of such a thing was mad- ness aud the agony of the struggling, drown- ing victims found its response in the bosoms of those who stood wringing their hands in belp- less horror in view of their friends. Now and then the waters would wash against one side of the mountain and then to the other side, car- rying with them their human freight, And this diversion enabled those on the banks to rescuse many. It will be found that on this account many will be returned to their homes | and friends who are now accounted lost. The list of dead is therefore a matter of conjecture and.will not be definitely known before to- morrow. Searchers are out everywhere from Johnstown to Blairsville. THE FUGITIVES RETURNING. 9:40 a. m.—The fugitives are returning to the place where a few hours ago they were hapy and prosperous but where all is now desola- tion, and in a few hours more the work of systematically searching for the victims of the | gh to flood will begin. The water is still too hi, attempt to estimate the extent of the loss. THE AWFUL HORROR, Fire Adds to the Terrors of the Flood and Roasts Its Victims. New Frorexce, Pa., June 1.—The calamity of yesterday was as singular as it was fatal. It is now very evident that more lives have been lost because of foolish incredulity than from ignorance of the danger. For more than a year there have been fears of an accident of just such a character. The foundations of the dam were considered to be shaky last spring, and many increasing leakages were reported from time to time. According to peopie who live in Johnstown and other towns on the line of the river, ample time was given to the Jobu: town folks’ by the railroad officials and by | other gentlemen of standing aud reputation in dozens, yes, hundreds of cases, but this warnin; was utterly = and those who heede: y were looked upon it early in the cow- ards, and many jeers were uttered by lips that now are cold among the rank grass beside the river, ONE POOR NAMELESS WOMAN who looked with sightless eyes at the gray clouds from the slimy bank of a meadow just below New Florence, wore smile. It, per- haps, had its birth in that spirit of “who's afraid,” which has bad such awful results. An awful mud-bedraggled, ghastly burden it was that came in among the meadow, and yet there was a look of peace on the features t brought tears to the eyes of the rough men who found her and who fastened the body with rir string toa post. She had a work-a- life. eedog her face thin and worn and her hair streaked with gray as the stormy sky just after dawn. Whether incredulity or foo! diuess numbers its tlood victims by scores or by the hundreds no one yet knows, andit will be many days before the writing upon tombstones and the tracing of “the unknown dead” are ended, There las grown up a bitter feeling among the surviving sufferers against those who owned the lake and dam, and suits will be plentiful by and bye. creek, above Johnstown. broke about noon yes- terday, and thousands of feet of lumber down the stream. It 1s impossible to tell what the loss of life will roll up, but at 9 o'clock the coroner of Westmoreland county sent a mes- wage ee that one hundred bodies had been recovered at Nineveh, half way from here to Johustown. AN ESTIMATE OF 1,200 victius. “Ihave been at with my train since 11 o’clock have seen fully 500 persons lost in the flood.” J. W. Esch, a brave railroad employee, saved 16 lives at Nineveh. It is also said that ouly three houses remain in Cambria City. The first authentic news was from W. N. Hays, of the Peunsyivania railroad company, who reached New Florence at 9 o'clock. He says the valiey towns are annihilated, A REFUGEES stoRY. John McCarthy, a carpenter, who lives im Johnstown, reached here about 4 o'clock, He left Johnstown at haif-past 4 yesterday, and favs the scene wien he left was indescribable, The people had beeu warned early in the morning to move to the highlands, but they did not heed the warning up to 1 o'clock, when the water poured into Cinder street several feet | deep. | _ Then the houses began rocking to and and finally the force of the current carries buildiugs across streets and vacant lots and dashed them against each other, | them into fragments, were freighted with the poor wretches who so shortly before had laughed at the ery of danger. The waters are now receding here as rapidly @s they rose last night, and as the banks um- cover the dead are showing up. The most in- tense excitemeut prevails here. A report bas just been received that twenty persons are on an islaud vear Nineveh and that a man and woman are on # partly sub- merged tree. This came down from the bursted dam above Johnstown, It came like a frenzied whirlpool, and before the people could realize it they were swept into its grasp. Fortunately the people living on the low-lying ground escaped. At 7:30 o' last night a great pile of drift-wood was swept “FOR GOD'S SAKE COME.” The horrified spectators on the shore saw three women on 4 raft, to one of whom were clinging two children, neither of whom was ap- more an infant.
