F. B. Novzs, Treasurer Evening Star Newspaper Co. Subscribed and sworn to before me this third day of June, A. D. 1989, Joun T. C. Crane, Notary Public. —_——— + = The Record Beaten Again! Leaving that sort of thing wholly to those Papers that need and enjoy the transparent de- vices of horn-blowing and tomtom beating, Tue Evexive Sta pursues the even tenor of its way, printing all the news long in advance of its cotemporarios, covering the entire field of local circulation, and serving as the ac- knowledged medium for business communica- tions between the people of the District and between them and the rest of the world, thus every day extending its influence and increas- ing its usefulness. To make good these asser- tions no array of boastful words is necessary, and but little space is required. A few figures will make the whole sabject plain, and to these the thoughtfal attention of those interested is invited. They speak more forcibly than writ- ten language. however deftly employed. Tue Stan's record for the month of May just closed is as follows: Number of new advertisements printed....6,033 Average daily circu! 29,616 Never before in a single month have there been so many new advertisements printed in any peper in Washington. Up to that period April was the banner advertising month in the history of Washington journalism; but May beats the April record by the handsome bal- ance of 216, Not less gratifying is the comparison in re- gard tociroulation. The average daily cireu- lation for the month just ended leads that of the corresponding month in 1333, when the average reached 26,722. That was a wonderful showing for a city no larger than Washington, but this year’s splendid record lead: ‘at of a year ago by the surprising increase of 2,838. 6,033 new advertisements in a month, and 29,616 copies of the paper circulated every secular day in the month. with not less than five times that many readers! tell the whole story. accompaniment. oo Aid for the Sufferers. The wave which swept down upon Johnstown and its series of connected villages has not only destroyed the lives of thousands but has left other thousands suffering and destitute. ‘The death list is as long as if a great battle had raged through the valley; the destruction of property and of ths means of support to the survivors is far greater than a battle would have accomplished. The heart of the whole nation beats in sympathy with the sorrowing and helpless survivors of the disaster, and American sympathy in such cases is accustomed to give substantia! manifestations of its exist- ence. Help is needed at Johnstown, and is The charitable and well-to-do of Washington will not be slow in responding to this appeal. Whether aid is rendered by contributions through the press, through a public meeting called by the Commissioners, or through syetematic collections directed by a local charity, or by means of all these methods, let speedy action be taken by the charitably inclined to place their contributions through some medium at the scene of suffering. In order to do its part in hastening relief at the time when it is most needed Tue Sra will re- ceive contributions for the purpose indicated, acknowledge their receipt in ite columns, and forward the money promptly to the persons authorized to receive it. a Washington takes no pride in emulating Venice. It derives no special satisfaction from rowing beats and catching fish on Pennsyl- Vania avenue, reviving the practices of the dwellers on Tiber creek in the early days of the city. South Washington objects seriously to being cut off from the main city by the addi- tion of an isolating water belt to the belt of railroad tracks. The whole deluged river front Faises the voice of protest against the en- croachments of the water. The industries de- pendent upon the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, which is, perhaps, utterly ruined, will share the fate of the canal. The same evils were ex- Perienced inasmaller degree in 1877. They ‘will be suffered again if the water front of the ¢ity is left unprotected, and the Long bridge, a dam turning floods upon the city, is permitted toremain. The obstructing Long bridge must go! These figures They need no brass band needed at once. Our neighbor, the Post, is doing excellent work in raising subseriptions for the Johns- town sufferers, and the other city papers are freely offering their services in any way availa- ble in their behalf. The press of Washington Represent the Washington people in always coming prowptly to the aid of the sufferers in case of public calamity. a Washington has suffered from the flood heavy losses in property, though, happily, not in life. Some citizens who are in circum- stances to bear their losses are poorer by thous- ands of dollars; but there aro others the sub- stance of whose property and whose entire means of present support have been swept away. The disaster at Johnstown minimizes the blow which has fallen upon the capital, and in view of the far greater suffering of the People of the deluged Pennsylvania valley our city’s charity will not end as well as begin in the relief of flood-sufferers at home. The latter, however, must not be entirely over- jJooked and forgotten. The charitable of Wash- ington have opeued to them, so to speak, both @ domestic and a foreign mission, oe The cigarette and the bustle must beth go, sce Cag together. This lesson is taught by experience of s young in Orange, N.
