THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON THE. GREAT RAIN STORM. DAMAGE BY THE DELUGE. nines RAILROAD TRAVEL INTERRUPTED. THE FLOOD IN THE POTOMAC. Rock Creek and Other Streams Out of Their Bounds. Losses Along the River Front and on Rock Creek—The Harbor Improve- ment Work Injured—The Long Bridge Threatened—The River Still Rising. —— Water, water everywhere! Muddy water, raging, boiling, racing, whirling past the city to the sea, creeping up, inch by inch, foot by foot, a turbid, angry flood, showing its teeth and growling in its fury, All along the George- town river front yesterday folks looked at the clonds and then out at the driving rain and shook their heads. The stiff southeast gale held the tides back and slowly the water began to rise during the afternoon. As time went on the winds blew harder and the rain pelted faster, and merchants began to grow alarmed. At midnight Rock creek shook itself and rushed down into the river » torrent It mounted rapidly, and by three o'clock was — than ever known before, by 4 feet, ac- to the estimate of those at the aque- po) Then, when the wind went down, the flood in the creek subsided somewhat and contained to fall, though, all during the day it has danced down at a trie htful speed, and is still far above ite no height, and three times as broad as usual. The tall trees on the little islets in the center of the creek are bent ones leveled to At one place an onion bed that was covered last night had been uncovered by the fi waters, and the green stems of every — iy stretched nort'ward, while the flood rapidly to the south. Great masses of tins m shattered structures up the creek came tumbling down the stream, bumping into = smashing into walls, burying themselves “The Scene from the Aqueduct Bridge. The Aqueduct bridge was lined with people from an early hour this morning watching the mad race of the yellow Potomac, while those whose interests lay along the front were at | work as hard as beavers shifting stores, mak- ing fast their scows, and taking time by the | forelock while the waters crept higher and cele." at the wharves and crept into the ce! Atnoon the river was running with of a race horse, so fast that even the | al guessers shook their heads and declined to — gs — Some folks said it was going rate of 10 an eae some 15, others 20, it was even thought by a few that the water was traveling as fast as 25 miles an hour. ‘The trees on the Three Sisters were submerged, save afew waving leaves, that looked iike green driftwood; the causeway from Virgiuia to Analostan Island was almost invisible, and | between the island and the shore was a broad, | swift current, Ihe Columbia club's boathouse was isolated from the island by a stream 20 feet wide. and o— the shores of the island great breakers roared as the flood, impeded by the rocks on the bank, tumbled up aud over them, THE ANGRY FLOOD. The water swirled and swung under the Aque- duct bridge, boiling as it struck the piers, and whipping upa foam with a roaring and grind- ing sound that was frightful Along the wharves was great activity. A gang of men were ready with boats to catch timbers, but they crept near the shore with a safety line to and | the wharves. The channel was totally clear of all craft. none daring to brave the tremendous current that would have swept them to probable destruc- tion. Tug-boats worked their way up the river along the wharves by running ahead slowly for # time and then tying up to get their breath. Two or three schooners lay along the os near the bridge, guyed by several strong rope: that grew taut and threatened to breale unde: the strain as the great masses of water ptreck the bulls and swung them out. 4 STRUGGLE FOR LIFF. Three men went out in a small boat near Dent's foundry to make fast a line on a schooner, and, with a sudden whirl, the boat overturned, throwing its occupants into the water. Two of them reached the wharf safely, but the tide caught the third, a great, brawny fellow, of enormous strength, and swept him | down.’ Some one threw him a line, but he was | several yards down before he was pulled in. ‘The struggle was a terrific one, those on shore pulling with all their might and the unfortunate man struggling with the frenzy of despair. At) last be reached the shore, weak and about to give up, every shred of clothing torn from him. the flood had literally stolen bis clothes from | | his back. | Reports were received hourly at the aque- | duct office of the condition of affairs at Great Falls, although there was no apprehension of | danger to the works. Col. Wilson remained at the office until after midnight last night. Speak- ing this morning of the odd circumstance of | water causing a fire at the lime kilns, he told of | A SINGULAR paradox he experienced while stationed in Ore- gon. The water, be said, rose so high that | there was none to drink, and it became so cold that there was no ice to obtain. This resulted from the flooding of the water-works pump, and the freezing of the ice machine's pipes. NEWS FROM THE UPPER POTOMAC. At half-past eleven word was received at the office that at lock 20, just above Great Falls, the river and the canal were one flood, while the | river was at least 12 feet above its usual level, FLOODED CELLARS ON THE AVENUE. In nearly every basement and cellar on Penn- sylvania avenue there is from one to four feet of water, and as these cellars are used mostly for storing goods the aggregate damage will be considerable. Around the Center market and muisiana avenue the damage will be greater than anywhere else, as this point is very low. ae cellar of the Howard house is flooded @ depth of four feet and a large pat of vegetables and groceries were de- stroyed. The servants were busy this morning fishing them out. The Marble saloon is flooded to a depth of about 18 inches. Furtuer up town the Richmond and Danville railroad company’s building has 2 feet of water in the cellar, and men were busy all day Papo it out, but it came in faster than sould get rid of it, The agent floor of the Center market is flooded, and the busy housewife had to hurry with her purchases. A great many of the stands had to be vacated. The water backed up through the low- sewers. Chief Parris has been in receipt of a great many requests for his engines to pump out cellars. The water department has an en- gine, which they purchased some time ago for this work, and it will be utilized. Railroad Communication with the South Cut Om. Railroad travel south of Alexandria has been abandoned for the present. The trains leaving | here yesterday afternoon had to return, not | being able to get through. The Richinond train north, due here at 3:40, was compelled to at Fredericksburg. The schedule of all south-bound trains on th+ A. and F. coast line, the Midland road and the Washington and Ohio road (north and youth) are aunulled until fur- ther orders. The full extent of the damage te the rouds cannot yet be determined, ‘The Midland road is said to have suffered most. It is thought that they will not be able to turn e@ wheel on that oe until Monday. so exten- sive is the damage to culverts, bridges, and twack. ROAD. ‘The storm played great havoc on the road miles | -ground | between Alexandria and Quantico, and many washouts and landslides are reported. All trains bound south are held up until the dam- age can be repaired. Superintendent McKee- ver, of the Pennsylvania road, told — STAR reporter to-day that it would re- quire at least twenty-four hours to repair the damages. A force of upwards of five hundred men have been dispatched to the bad sections along the road. ‘The western trains on the Pennsylvania road, as far as Harrisburg, are running regularly. Railroad men all agree that the storm done more damage than any previous one of which they have any knowledge. SOUTHERN TELEGRAPH LINES DOWN. All telegraph communication south of Alex- andria is interrupted, and it is difficult to re- ceive definite information, THE BALTIMORE AXD OnTO, The great storm was kind to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, locally speaking. The Wash- ington branch is all right and trains between Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York are run- ning regularly. ‘Along the Washington ‘branch the scenery ig interesting; small streams have developed into rivers, and all ground is flooded. ‘WASHOUTS ON THE METROPOLITAN BRANCH. The Metropolitan branch did not fare as well, and a number of washouts and land slides have been reported. A large force of workmen are strung all along the line repairing the damage as rapidly as possible. ROCK CKEEZE BRIDGER SAFE, ‘The Rock Creek bridge is reported safe, al- though at one time it was feared it would be swept away. The main line of the road has also suffered badly from washouts and land slides. All the telegraphic communication is in working order. bis Valiey branch of the road suffered more than any other portion of the line. It is badly washed, and there are a great many land slides reported. It will be over twenty-four hours before travel can be resumed, THE WORST OF ITS KIND. Superintendent Alvey, in speaking of the storm this morning, said that it was the worst of its Kind he ever knew. Locally speaking, he said he thought his road had been very lucky, as all trains were running on good aver- age time. He said that they were not running their fast express trains exactly on time, os they did not think it best. All stranded sengers have been cared for and their tic aes made good, It is expected that all travel will be resumed by to-morrow morning. NIGHT SCENES AT THE RAILROAD STATIONS, All last evening far into the night passengers for various points on the different railroads crowded together at the stations waiting fora chance to get away. Reports accidents, wash-outs and the sweeping away of bridges were numerous and created anything but a comfortable feeling among the crowd. Trains | which were to have left ata stated time were | missing, and a great many clerks, who for the | most part make up the population of the suburbs, were left, unable to get away. | Now and then a train would start, preceded by & gang of men feeling for wash-outs, but as far as the Metropolitan branch was concerned | none went farther than the Rock creek bridge. as that was considered unsafe, and the railrond people did not think it| best to take any risks, The trains | on the Washington branch were delayed some time by the breaking of one end of a culvert near Baltimore. Suburban trains on | the Pennsylvania roid didn’t ore to go | farther than Alexandria, i beyond that point | traveling was extremely dangerous, so the gov- | ernment clerks living beyond that point passed the night in Washington. Exciting Scenes in Georgetown, As early as yesterday afternoon precautions were being taken by the merchants and others along the river front at Georgetown to protect their property, and men were at work in the storm all night, but for such places of business as the lumber yards and coal wharves the rise in the river was too rapid to give time for moving the stock to safer places. THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF COAL GONE. Mr. H. C. Winship is without doubt the heay- iest loser by the freshet. He places his loss at fully $30,000 by the sweeping away of several thousand tons of coal, to say nothing of the damage to his wharf. This loss is confined to the coal which was piled upon his wharf, He large cargo of coal consigned to him on ay here by canal, and of the fate of that he is not informed. Along the river front, from the new bridge to Rock creek, the scene was one of decided ani- mation and bustle this morning. Boats and wagons were brought into service by merchants to remove goods from the fast rising Potomac. In the neighborhood of the flour mills bales es of hay were piled upon the north , While barrels of flour were being constantly rolled to dryer places, The cellars of all the stores and Warehouses along Water street and its vicinity SAVING THE CLUB BOATS, Acenter of attraction for a large crowd was the Columbia Athletic club's boat-house, in | which there was at 10 o’clock this morning about four feet of water at the door leading | into the hou Janitor Bremmer, with a force of assistants, was waist deep in the water care- ‘fully removing the boats, and before noon | about fitty had been made safe. On each side of 32d street for a good way up, and on many vacant lots in the _ vicinity, the boats were taken and guarded | Yesterday the club received in its house a new four-oared g1g, costing several hundred dollars, and at oue time it appeared as though it would be a wreck, but it was removed without being damaged. From the flooded boat houses on each side of the Columbia house the boats were being rowed to the streets, REMOVING FLOUR AND ICE. In the storehouse of the New York steamship | company yesterday were several hundred bar- rels of flour to be shipped in a day or two, the | property of Cropley & Herr, but Mr. Cropley, | fearing the result of the heavy rain, had them removed. Inthe same storehouse were about (175 barrels of lime, which cannot be |removed. No damage is expected from it as | the water will carry the lime off. The scene | in the yards of the’ Independent ice company was a lively one, Numerous wagous were | backed up to the great store house receiving loads of ice and hurriedly removing it. That program has been kept up the greater part of the day. The water in the yards of the company up to the body of the wagon. Men and ys, skiffs, row-boats, and men in rubber boots were b y kept engaged in saving logs of wood from the wood ya on the wharves. The water in the Potomac boat-house reached almost to the top of the door frame. The boats were removed before the water reached its present height, The stock of lumber in the yards appeared to be all safe at noon, for pre- cautions were taken last night, but, concernin the dressed lumber, some fears were expressed, | andj the employes were kept busy in placing | the same a story higher. | _REACHENG THE HIGH-WATER MARK oF 1877, Those who had been on K street since early morning declared that the water was rising | at the rate of an inch every quarter of an hour, This, together with the news that the river at Harper's Ferry continues to rise, caused | many merchants along the wharves moro anxiety than they felt at first, This being so, they were most of them of the opinion that | the freshet would equal that of 1877. Grey's | dry dock, on the creek and canal, suffered | greatly. 'He wns certain that his tools and ev- | gine were rendered useless. It was found necessary to remove the horses from the stable of the Washington aqueduct, which has | heretofore been regarded as safe from any rise , ip Rock creek. ‘The schooner Coast Survey broke its moor- ings off the point of Analoston Island. ‘The Washington Qanoo boat-house and the Sharpsbin Fishing boat and club house, op site Georgetown, are receiving telling strains | Upon their moorings, and some fears are ox- | pressed as to their safety. ‘The high-water mark of 1877 upon the office of Wheatley Bros’. was, at 8:30 o'clock this morning, but two feet above the water. At 9:53 o'clock to-night bigh tide is due, which will increase the high water at least two feet, it is thought. THE K-STRERT BRIDGE DAMAGED, The flood in Rock creek caused three canal boats to break loose from their moorings aud dash against the K-street bridge with such force as to render the bridge unsafe for travel, and this morning barricades were up. ‘whe boats received better treatment, for they were badly stoven in, The hand rail of the bridge was twisted as though it was but mere wire. A NARROW ESCAPE. Yesterday afternoon, during the heaviest rain, the wail of house No. 1234 28th street, oc- cupied by J. D. Angels, of engine company No, — in, Mr. Angels narrowly escaped with is tife. Flood and Fires. Atabout 9 o'clock last night fire added its terrors to those of the flood, the former being caused by the latter. The rising Potomac crept into the lime kilns and ware- houses of Godey at 27th and K streets, and Johnson & Libbey, on 29th street, The damage caused by the fire was trifling, but the Lead | | SOCIAL MATTERS.
