M'PARLAND TELLS IS STORY—MISS M'RRIDE AND COL, TRACY HAVE A STREET ENCOUNTER, In the case of Mary J. McBride and Joba W. Mos Farland for arson, on trial in the Criminal Court, ex-Lieut. Arnold testified yesterday after Ta Sran’s report closed that McFarland was intox!- cated when arrested, and at the station he said be bad bought olls, under Miss McBride's instruc- Uon, for housekeeping purposes. M'PARLAND'S TESTIMONY. ‘The defendant, McFarland, testified that he pur. chased ofl and rosin for Miss McBride; he otled three floors and the back staircase, also some of the Dedsteads in order to destroy bugs. He had Been sent out to purchase camphor and which Miss McBride and an Irish wornan scatte around to keep the moths out of the carpet, She said nothing Whatever to him about the house on fire. Miss McBride, through Capt. Ver- hey, made the proposition to'him that ne vake the responsibility for the burning, and that in returp she would see that his famtiy” was cared for, and ‘would use her influence to get him pardoned.’ Ver- bey had asked him for the Dugan letter, but he declined to give it up, asking What they would give him for it. ‘The letter was then in the posses. About 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon Mr. T. C Taylor, counsel for McFarland, and Col Tracy, Who was a witness in the case, met at 7th and E streets northwest, and the latter handed Mr. Tay- lor a letter to look over. It is understood that the letter was from Miss McBride and explanatory of certain charges made against Col. ‘Tracy. Miss McBride came up while Mr. Taylor was readin the letter, and snatched t out of his hand.
