For several weeks past numerous robberies have Deen committed in open daylight, which have ‘greatly puzzled the police, as they were evidently the work of a practiced hand. The burgiaries were Invariably committed in residences adjoining ¥acant houses, and each case the plundered resi- dence was entered through a second-story window. In some instances the vacant house was broken inte, and in others the thiet would get the keys to the vacant house, pretending that he desired to Tent it and wished to look througu it. Going to the Second.story he would climb from the window of house to the window of the adjoin! house, and after securing What piunder he coul Wouid escape. “He always returned the keys. A$ so many robberies were committed in the same manner the officers had no doubt one man was re. sponsible for all of them. Detectives Raff and Horne have been Investigating the matter, Dut It Was not until Saturday that they succeeded in ob- taming a clue which led to the al it an early hour yesterday morning, of a young man who gave his name as John” Mubier, and ‘who ciaimed to be from Cixicago.” From the character of the work the officers Satished themselves that it was being done by other than local crooks, and their suspl- elons rested upon Mubler, whom they watched until yesterday morning, When they arrested him, Saturday afternoon, about 3 o'clock, the house of J. R. MeCooch, No. 41534 1st street northwest, Was entered through an adjouing vacant house (in the manner above described) and robbed of a quantity of jewelry. At this house, however, the thicf had not “entered the house —_unob- served. He was seen from the opposite ve of the street by Miss Ella Marsiey and Mr. iward Campbell. Nu attention was paid to him, lowever, as they supposed he had a right there; but when they learned that the house had been robbed they remembered the man they saw, and Were able lo give the officers a description of ‘him, ‘Thelr description tallied with that of Mubler, and the oficers then concluded to arrest him. ‘They Went to a boarding-house at No. 222 B street horchwest, where Mubler was stopping. He nad hot then returned home, but the officers remained about the neighborhood untli about 2 o'clock, en Muhler, with several other persons, ap- red and entered the house. In order to’ give mM no chance Lo escape the officers Waited until everything quieted down, and then summoned a ‘Squad of officers from ‘the sixth precinct to sur- round the house. The officers knocked at the door aud an old colored man answered their summons. He showed the officers where Muhler's room Was, and they proceeded up the steps. They Knocked at “is door, but being too slow in answering, the ' officers pushed open the door and entered. Three men and a woman Sprang from the same bed as the officers entered. Ove would have jumped from the window had not Detective Horne grabbed him. Another hid in a wardrobe, and Mubler stood against the wall as though he could not move. He denied knowing anything about the charge against him, but after being Idencified, he udimstted the MeCooca rob. Dery. but denied the others. He 1s also suspected of the following ‘robberies: On the 21st instant, a suit” of clothes and Some jewlry from the boarding house of Mrs. Fle.cher, No. 2020G street; on the 16th In stunt a quantity or Jeweiry from’ the residence of Mrs. McLane, No. 1704 L street; on the 6th in- Stant, a ‘Suit Of clothes from the house of A.
