Warr Herxox, Cashier Bvening Star Newspaper Co. Sworn to and subscribed before me this twenty- fifth day of June, A. D. 188% Jou T. C. Cranx, The World's foreign correspondent, Mr. Craw- ‘ord, Whose relations to Mr. Blaine and the estab- lished accuracy of whose previous accounts and predictions concerning the doings of the Maine Statesman give his correspondence great weignt with the American pubilv in the crisis at Chicago, | says: “The London papers contain reports saying that Mr. Blaine is busy intriguing and directing affairs at Chicaga. These stories are les, pure and simple. I know, from personal eviaence, that all @uring Saturday he did not receive one dis- patch from Chicago or from the United States. It can De further said that he has not recelved one political dispatch from the United States upon This entire trip.” The suggestion that Mr. Blaine has been conducting a campaign at Chicago, and 1s personally responsibie for the deadlock there, is part of a course of unjust and uniriendiy treatment to which he has been subjected ever since he wrote the Florence letter. It compelled him to write from Paris substantially what he had written from Florence, and now forces another declination by cable. It is not fair to biame Mr. Blaine because forty-elght of his friends have voted for him at Chicago against bis expressed wish, and that other Irienda, not votthg for bim, have been slow to con- centrate upon another candidate. His nomina- ‘on by acclamation after all he has done, would permit m0 fair-minded man to accuse him of having worked for the honor; not being nominated, the ignoring of his name could not be regarded as a token of disrespect, much less as a defeat. Nobody thinks of acousing Mr. McKinley of disloyalty to his chief, or of any thought or word unworthy of an honor. able man; and yet, in spite of his energetic pro- test, uttered on the floor of the convention, bis vote grew from 2 to 14, or seven hundred per cent, beside which Mr. Biaine’s increase of a bare forty-five per cent up to this morning looks meager indeed. The same confidence suould be extended to the gentleman from Maine, who voluntarily re- fused consent Lo the use of his name when success ‘Was conceded to be within bis grasp, as to the gentleman {rom Ohio, who withheid his consent Decause he was in honor bound to doso, Since the commencement of his public career, Mr, Cleveland has been a most fortunate man, in all bis aspirations, and as yet there are no | signs of his good luck deserting him. The st. Louis convention was in ail respects everything he cOuld ask, and now comes the Chicago conclave, ‘Which, tothe eyes of an unsuspecting outsider, Would seem to be managed in his direct interest. If the President had personally controlled its movements it coulé hardly have served his pur- poses better. Not only have the circumstances Of the case favored his cause, but some of the prominent men—Foraker and Editor Smith, for agents im his bebalf if they had been directiy in his pay. AS for Elkins, he has earned a cabinet Position or a Arst-class foreign mission. ——————— ‘There is something that needs mending in the apparatus of the Signal Office, The last cool wave ‘hat came this way followed close on the heels of an announcement from the weather bureau that no reilet from the heat could be promised. On ‘Saturday there was another iliustration of the same fatal facility for predicting by opposites It ‘Was soberly announced about noon that there was Bo probability even of 4 local shower, and by dinner time the sureers were flowing like rivers and people Whose cellars were below the sewer level were using tubs and buckets and pumps as Af thetr lives depended on the spirited work of one half hour. The Signal Omice had a device the other day for vesting the fiuelity of an anemome- Yer; itis pity that something equally pr.ctical could not be found to use as a governor on the prophecy machine. $$ ‘The regular yearly series of reworks explosions as begun with a grand display at Rondout, N. Y. where Sunday was celebrated by burning upa store full of frecrackers day's celebration into a festival of “bangs and Muzes and smelix.” The laws in this District gov- erning the trafic In such combustibles and explo- sives are strict aad wholesome, but there are a good many boys already indulging prematurely tn ‘the luxury of noise and smoke, and the police cannot be too vigilant in suppressing such demon- strations. ote The ceremonies which are to accompany tne opening of tue reichstag by Emperor Wililam II ‘will be of the most imposing character. They are Intended, evidently, to impress the assembied courtiers With a sense of their monarch’s dispost- {ios to make up in majesty and pomp what «he laeks in the calm discretion born of experience. Neither bis father nor his grandfather needed any ‘outward splendors to fasten upon them the attea- tio of all Burope or the affection and respect of their own subjects, $e Australia is taking rank as @ wine-producing country. Wine is now made there from grapes of | the Buropean Yarieties, which have all the flavor Of those grown on tueir native soll, and are at the same Ume free from that devastatof of continental Vine-yards, the phylioxera, At two suillings ‘sterling a gallon, this is calculatet to bring to the grower at least twenty pounds an acre—a azure ‘Which Wili cause every avallabie foot of ground in Australia to be Curned to vine-culture, American Krape-growers and Wine-makers Will Dave to look To their laureis, —_—> -=—__ ‘To show how littie the movements of the for- eign money market can be accepted as evidence Of the satisfaction with which Europe regards | political doings over here witness the boom in Dut on that prin- ciple in the present case Europe siguified its ap- proval of the Chicago deadlock, —+ + From one point of view the republicans are to be congratulated om carrying their convention over Sunday. The not Weather and the hotel bills, be- tweea them, proved too much for a good many of ‘tue shouters in the galleries, who had no errand there except the tliegitimate one of burrahing somevedy into @ place which he would not have ‘his merits or his popularity. With them the way, ‘Was reason to expect the to work and some ‘The Chicago convention would not vote unant- mousiy for Blaine and hesitated to give a majority to anybody else.
