Fhe Administration and Virginia Politics. PROBABLE COURSE OF PRESIDENT GARFIRLD. ‘There 1s @ good dealof talk in political cir cits to-day in regard to the position the admin- istration may take towards Virginta, The rc- port thatthe President and Secretary Blaine had unqualifiedly endorsed the readjuster ticket and platform is dented by prominect Virginia republicans. The administration has not, from the best information, positively de- termined uj any policy in to Virginia politics. The President will wait until the meeting of the republican corvention, which will undoubtedly be held, to make up his mind as to what Is the best course. The convention will refiect the feelings and wishes of the re- publicansof the state, and the President ts willing to walt forits judgment, Besides there isnoneea of haste. Only the readjusters are in the fleld. They have no Lk sg a3 yet, and even should the administration finally de- cide to assist Mahone the postponement of thts decision for awhile cannet do his cause any harm, Itis pretty safe to say that the action of ube republican convention will determine the policy of the administration in Virginia affairs. The Bribery Charge-The Halt- Breeds Say It is ® Conspiracy— The Testimony Narrowed —What Mr. Conkling’s Organ Says—What the Argus Urges-The Ballot 'To- day—Depew Gets a Majority of Hepublicans in the Legislature, Et. [Special Dispatch to The Evening Star.) ALBANY, N. Y., June 10. The state capitol is in a great commotion this morning over the charges of senatorial bribery. The stalwarts aver that all of Mr. Bradley’s assertions ar3 strictly true, The half-breeds are equally earnest in their deciar- ations that the whole thing is a conspiracy concocted by the frienus of the ex-Senators to save them from absolute rout. Both will hold to these averments totheend. No witnesses Were preceat at the time of the alleged payment of the money by Sessions to Mr. Bradley. The former denies that he promised or patd any mon- ey, or that elther he or Mr. Bradley said anything about money in either conversation. Mr. Bradley aflirms that Sessions offered him one thousand dollars first, which he de- clined. That Sessions arranged for another interview at which he counted two thousand dollars in $500 and $50 bills, promising one thousand more in the event of Depew’s success, and produces the money, which he says was paid him by Sessions. There the matter rests, on the sworn statements of the two men. Both sides are trying to Work up circumstantial evi- dence to sustain their respective versions and to break down the credibility of each other. The charges made by the other two memoers of attempts io bribe them*are not considered of much account, as they were approached by & lobby broker, whose plan is to find on which side members are and then try and obtain a price for delivering them on that side. One of these pests Infests all legislative bodies to traffic in votes without any other capital or standing except “cheek.” "Senator jons years ago was recognized as one of the skilled telents of the “third house,” but has been piay- ing the reform role. The im -robabilities of this accusation that he would not be likely to Be iad for a vote until it was delivered, and ts too experienced and shrewd to be caught in this manner. No person ever suspect hira of lacking tn shrewdness, to but little ts known bere of his characteristics or creditability, but if there is a weak spot in his career or 4 ercoked place it will all be made known. The Stalwart organ this morning makes a great ado over the charges and development, aud com- menoes a long double-leadea article headed: “Tnfamous Crime,” with the declaration: “Oar columns this morning contain an exposure of the criminal manner in which it is sought to compass the defeat of Roscoe Co! and Thomas C. Platt. A crusade unparal All the crimes known to unscrupulous men have been resorted to.” Tne article closes as follows: “Roscoe Conkling’s vindication 13 complete; he could not be defeated withou! bribing men to disband the republican party; to disgrace the I ‘ture of 1SS1,and to dis honor themselves in this debauchery. James G. Blaine may revel; let him take his perjured Victims and do the will with them, ‘Taey are worthy of their chief.” Tne Arjus, the demccratic paper, this morning urges that all of these developments show the necesstty for the legislature to adjourn before they are further scandalized. The Investigation. Speaker Sharpe tegtitled before the specia committee this morning as to receiving the money from Mr. Bradley in five hundred and ten fifty dollar bills and corroborated the circumstances stated by Mr. Bradicy in regard to bis calling. No further developments have taken place to show which is teiling%he truth in regard to this affair. The expressi Mr, Bradley that aud ts dwelt upon by the stalwarts.
