The Claim for Depew—No Signifi- cance im To-day’s Hallot—The Bribery Case—What Bank Paid Out the Money—The Party Papers To-day, Etc. [Special Dispatch to The Evening Star.) AuBany, N. Y., June 11. ‘So many of the legislature have paired that the vote of to-day and Monday in joint con- vention can have little or no significance. The vote for Depew having reached three more than & majority of all the republicans elected to the legislature, the half-breeds insist that It Is equivalent to a party caucus nomination, and that the other side are bolters in refusiny obey the will of the eal nen to this time the stalwarts have accused ministration members with being wolters for refusing to assent to a party caucus and abide by the re- sult. Lhe effort is, therefore, to turn the tables. The evidence of the attempt to buy votes continues. The testimony of Armstrong of Oneida was direct of offers made to him by one Edwards to oppose Conkling, with a prom- Ise of custom-house patronage in addition. Judge Robertson, the new collector, dentes that Edwards had apy authority to talk about places In the custom-house. and that the idea that he would even give Edwards a plac? 1s preposterous. Other members are ready to go on the stand and testify that Edwards has made prepositions to them. The stalwarts will endeavor to connect Edwards with Depew’s canvass from the fact that Edwards makes his headquarters at the rcoms of Barber, a regular- Jy employed agent in legislative matters of the New York Central Raliroad, and that Edwards is Barber’s sole agent, and therefore, directly connected with Depew’s canvass. The gene- rally accepted view of Edwards ts, that heis aman cf more “cheek” than discretion, and goes about trying to find a member whom he Can buy: and tries to find a market where he can ce}] that member and get hiscommisston, Barber, of course, is given the first chance to bid, The great point in the bribery business i3 whether Sessious really did try to bribe Brad - ley or the latter enter into a conspiracy to ruin Sessions. The fact that both came from the same section of the slate and have been friends does not susta‘n the theory of Bradley’s con- spiracy. Both sides are trying to trace where the large bills used came from. ‘The haif- breeds insinuate that they have evidence that they were obtained at the bank of State Trea- surer Wendell, who 1s & Conkling supporter. The stalwarts in return intimate that they were paid from that bank, but on the check drawn by afirm of brokers where Sessions keeps an account, and a check drawn in such a Toanter as to attract attention. ‘The fact may be reached in the end. Senator Sessions has ob. tained the shrewdest lawyers in Albapy to at_ tend the Investigation,’ ee the other side have procured Mr. Bangs, of New York, who was one of the lawyers in the Bertha trial, and also in the police commission trials under Mayor Cooper. The Evening Journal this atveracon agsert that the charge of bribery is a “put up job,” acongpiracy, while the Erpress, the stal- Wart organ, this morning says the accusations are literally true, and that !t demonstrates the Way and modes that the followers of Blaine have resorted to to destroy Conkling and the party.
