N, Pike, of New York, announces that she will send to the next Exposition in Clccipnati, next September, a picture of Su Cecilia, by Tintoretto, which she intends after- Wards to present to the Arc Museum of that city. Mrs. Pike was formerly a resident of Cincinnati, and it was there that most of her husband's wealth was acquired. — Mrs. Fassett is now at Columbus, where she is engaged in painting a portrait of Gov. Foster, to De placed in the Ohio State House in that city. When completed t's ts eke ure will not be the only porirait honored by a place in that Danag. A Portrait of Chief Justice Walte, painted by her several years ago, now hangs in the Gulo Sa- | Preme Court room, which, as well as the Ex- | beoutive and other state ofices, 1s located in tae capitol. —The Parisian says that “American pa- | tronage of art would be more benefictal both to France and to America if 1t were really a pa- pres cel art, instead of & patronage of fash- jonable names.” This is very true; Dut there ts NO need of limiting the application of the re- mark to American patronage. It would apply with equal force to the patronage extended to art by France, and by Paris, itself, for Unat matter. Certain artists are the rage there as elsewhere. — Since going to Paris, Mr. Ross Tarner has concluded that on the whole Venice is a better Neild In which to follow his profession than the French capital. Accordingly, after a short stay at the latter place, and a brief visit to London, he goes back to thé fair and fascinating “Qaeen of the Adriatic,” where he flnds most congenial subjects for his pencil, and where he will again pend the summer, His present intention ts, as has already beea announced in Tue STAR, to spend the winter in Rome. Beyond taat' he has made no plans, but he will probably coms nd then be overned by circumstances as to the leuguh of 18 stay bere. — Despairing probably of any action in that direction by the authorities of either the state Of Virginia, which was the great commoner’s birth place, or Kentucky, which was hts adopted home, Mr. John D. Defrees, of this city, sag- gests to the friends of Henry Clay that they take measures Lo secure a statue of that popu- lar statesman, to be placed clcher in the old Hall of the Cay itol here or in some other sutta- big place. is hardly less discreditabie to the nation than surprising that Mr. Clay has not already been honored in this way, and it would 8:em that there ought to be no doul! or troubie about raising the funds necessary for the pur- pose If the subject were once fairly preseniod to the public. — According to the art critics of the New York papers, the statue of Farragut set up in that City last Wednesday is by far the nest thing Of the kind in the United States, and probably in all the world. It is safe to say, however, that if the picture of Itin Thursdays Graphic ts anything ike Correct the judgment of the pubile will not endorse this extravagant estimate. The figure presented there is not articularly imposing, and is too small for the Base, which looks very much lke the interior of a locomotive round-house, upon the walls of which bad boys had veen allowed the unlim- ted use of cuaik and charcoal ft is likely, however, that as a work of art the statue and its accessories are Detter than the Graphic Ulus- (ration, and we tincerely hope they are. —It 1s sald now that the explanation given for the rejection of Mr. Ernest Parton's pic- tures from the Royal Academy this year is that they represented American autumnal scenery, Ue colors of which are so vivid that the com- mittee on admission concluded they were too hly expressed for nature, and 89 voted to refuse them a place. Americans who have seen the paintings in question say, however, that they are not exaggerated or unttue in color, and it 1s altogether Mkely that they are not, since it would be almost impossible for any artist to reproduce from his palette the gor- geous coloring which nature some times puts upon the hills and felds of this country. it would be almost as difiicult to surpass the spltndors of a sunset on canvas. But these things the English who have never been away from Uneir moist and misty island cannot wader- stand. They loyally imarine that England ts ail the world, and that what does not look as tt looks there, Or what 18 not done as It isdone there, cannot be right. Even nature must be governed by the rules they prescribe. DL BOBINGER. In Mon! county.
