A PROLONGED DEAD-LOCK PROBABLE AT AL- Bany.—Assemblyman Richardson, of the 32d N. Y. district, is in the city, having left Albany yesterday. ToaSrak reporter to-day he said of the outlook at Albany: ‘It looks bad—very bad” His impression 1s that there will be a Prolonged dead-lock, and no man now can an- Ucipate the result. THE Potomac EXCURSION STKAMERS ALL Ricur.—Gen. Dumont, supervising taspector of steamboats, is looking specially into excursion steamers now that the season is a’ hand, Washington city is in the 34 inspection district. Gen. Dumont has received reports from the supervising inspector of this district upon all the river steamers. These reports state that they are all in good concition, comply with the regulations of the service, and have full life- saving sppliances, Gen. Dumont's attention was called to the recent disaster in Canada by THE STAR reporter. “No vessels.of her size can get a license to carry as many pars *ngers as sie had license for. She was licensed for 400, and had over 6000n board. Under our service no vessel of her s'ze and character can get a license for more than 100 passengers.” The differen e between the Canadian and American s'eamb at inspection service is apparently very marksd. GEN. RoBINeon, of Obio, being in town and atthe White House to-day, gave rise to a re- port that Judge Hobertsoa'was in the city. MRS. GARFIgLD is much better to-day. Her appetite 1s returning. She sleeps well, and quite a gain in strengta 13 noticeable. Scop Lrevr. F. L. Denney, U. 8. M. All tonds mailed on the day that the notifications expired will be re- ceived for continuance. This will ire the amount considerably above the limit. Every mail brings in additional bonds that are en- Utled to continuance under the conditions pre- seribed. It is known that the amount con- tinued will exceed pretty largely $260.000,000. Comtxc TO Look AFTER THE MaN WasO SLANDERED HiM.—Mr. John G. Thompson, sergeant-at-arms of the House, telegraphs here that he will leave Columbus, Ohio, to-day, for this city, to ascertain, if possivle, who started what he calls an “out us slander upon bim.” It erie that a libel sult or two will grow ont of the matter. . C., SATURDAY, MAY 28, 1881 THE SENATORIAL FIGHT. Calm Before the Storm. WHAT THE ALBANY SPECIALS SAY. Yesterday was comparatively a dull day at Albany. The leaders, managers and workers appeared to be tired out, and the legislature adjourned until Monday evening. The New York Times special says: ‘The legislature has adjourned, the members have gone, or are going, and ex-Senators Conkling and Platt: with their trusted-friends and advisers, have -Tetired from a -battlefleld bafiied, if not defeated. During four days & remarkable scene has been Witnessed here, Roscoe Conkling, the pride of the republican party in this state, a man who, by commanding abilities, has found his way to an eminent position in the nation, has been seen pieading with the representatives in the legislature of his own political faith, to be re tumed to the position which he has but just given up. He has not shrunk from all the com- Mon methods of conventions and canvasses, but has set up late and got up early to pour into the ears of members the story of his griev- ances, LIKE A FUNERAL. ‘The Sun correspondent telegraphs: ‘One evi- dence of the desperate situation of the stal- warts Ig the dispersion of the crowd of syco- phants who have heretofore surrounded Mr. Conkilng. He moved through the hallways of the Delavan with absolute freedom. No one rushed up and his hand, and no one Pie an opportunity to bask in the sunshine Of his smile, Occastonally a hat was removed, but the movement seemed to be inspired by re- spectiul sympathy. It was like a man’s removal of his hat wnen a funeral is pasaing. ‘The legislature adjourned at about 1 o'clock. As the wave of members rolled into the Dele- van house Mr. Conkling descended the stairs, entered Mr. Leland’s private office and paid his Dill. No retinue trailed in his wake, He en- gaged parlors for Monday and returned to his room. Ex-Senator Platt and Vice President Arthur packed their carpet-bags. Mr. Piatt Said that they should return next week in stronger force than ever. “The fight ts going on,’ said he emphatically, ‘and We are going to win.’ Marshal Payn said: ‘The friends of Mr. Conk- lng will not weaken. If two republicans are elected to the United States Senate they will be Roscoe Conkling and Thomas C, Platt,’ One by one the ch efiains dribbled over to the railroad dent Mr. Conkling left the hotel entirely alone. He wore a biue necktie, kid gloves and a wide-brimmed Derby hat, and carr.ed a palm-leafian He entered the depot ad passed through the gate. There were no cheers; no ladles waved their handkerchiefs; noone did him honor. His friends even al- lowed bim to go to the further end of the plat- form and look after his own baggage. Oa his Way to the parior cara colored ported tipped his hat and sald: ‘Good day, Senator.’ Mr. Conkling raised his Derby and bowed as grandly as though the Marquléof Lorne nad uecosted him.” CONKLING AND PLATT TO RENEW THE FIGHT IN PERSON. The Tivune dispatches state that Conk'ing and Platt both expressed their intention to re- turn to Albany and renew the fight, and adds: “It is the feeling of the politicians that, having once put himself in the unfortunate position of a man openly lobbying for a vitdication, writing letters to members of the legislature, Soliciting interviews and the like, the least bumillating thing Mr. Conkling can do 13 to Stand his ground to the end. It 1s for this Treason that he 1s expected to return here and renew his canvass, and for this reason, also, that he ts expected to remain a candidate in- definitely. To remain away trom Albany now would be, according to the politictans’ view, a humillating confession of defeat right upon the formal announcement that he should be a can- didate, and to withdraw his name would only make his situation more painful. By coming back here ho will keep his supporters in line, and if he can hold them together fora number of days or weeks, and then should withdraw his nme, or should cause an adjournment of the legislature without choice, he will succ3ed, according to his friends, in impressing the country with the idea that a considerable por- on of the republican party approve his oe and still maintain their firm allegiance to him. All the talk of his friends points to some such course as this, We are all coming back.” said Marshal Payn, ‘‘and more, we are coming back.to elect Mr. Conkling. There will be a caucus Monday night at which we shall have a majority of the republican members and Mr. Conkling will be elected. THE CONKLING CLAIMS BUSINESS, It 1s !mposs.ble to find any more basis than there has been heretofore for the claim of the Conkling managers that they have now or will have by Monday evening a majority of the republican members. They did not hesttate to make the announcement of a caucus for last bight, without being sure that they woula have names enough to calleit, and they will Dot hesitate now to keep up their campaign of prophecy. THE PLAN OF CAMPAIGN, It was at first supposed that the friends of the administration would select two candi- dates with which to confront the two S2na- torlal deserters, but there is a growing senti-. ment among them in favor of avoiding all the dangers of dissensions that might arise out of the attempt to select at the outset two candi- dates for a fusion of numerous diverse ele- mente, The plan most favored is that, by an amicable agreement between the friends of the various candidates, certain of them shall be chosen to be voted for when Mr. Conxling’s successor 1s balloted, for, and certain others when Mr. Platt’s su ris delng balloted for. In this way the candidates will not cross each other.” A PROBABLE DBAD-LOCK. A Heraid special from Albany says: “It noth- ing of national importance occurs to disturb the situation the belief is that the efforts of each side before the legislature comes to- gether again will counterbalance one another, and that the ballotting for Senators next Tuesday will disclose a dead-lock at the very Start, Hable to last indefinitely.” HOW THE CAUCUS FAILED. The canvarsers for signatures for the stal- wart call compared notes and reported fitty- seven names. This was three more than was nccessary, and Speaker Sharpe was directed to Dave the call read before adjournment, in the assembly.
