THE EVENING STAR. E a WANTS. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON SATURDAY May 2S, 188i. CROSBY 8. NOYES..__..Editore ‘The Evening Star has a regular, perma- nent.bonn fide dally circulation more than ther daily paper pub- lished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added ether. ‘THE Stax office is connected with the Telephone Exchange Advertisements, orders for the paper by mai! and otherwise, news, or any informstion or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Persons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘Tue Sram mailed to them. postpaid, for fifty cents Fer month, and the address changed as often as Gesired. The Situation at Albany. The members of the New York legislature temporarily relieved themselves of the pressure of machine and antt-machine, by adjourning yesterday and hurrying to thelr respactive homes. This short respite, untli Monday, is to be profitably employed by the legislators in finding out the feeling and wishes of their con- stituents, whose right to a volce in the pending contest cannot very well b3 ignored by those who desire to continue a pubic life. The first Week of the Senatorial Nght, though by no means indicating what will be the end, has developed several important facts which assist in forming some conclusion. In the first place, Mr. Conkling and the machine have proven to be much weaker than even his opponents sup- posed. Pfior to the ex-Senator’s appearance at Albany he was generally credited with almost arbitrary control over a majority of the repub- lican members of the legislature. The leaders of the administration side, conceding to Conk- ling a majority, had decided not to enter nis caucus. The most strenuous efforts of the Conkling men, directed by the ex-Senator him- self and backed by his Influence, failed to rally amajority, and the progosed caucu3 ended in darkpess ard defeat. Another important development of the week is the cohesiveness of the antt-Conkilng repub- licans. It was saidof them that they would Not be able to hold together; bat, tn fact, they have, under the leadership of Mr. Robertson, effected an organization far superior to that of the stalwarts. It ts toierabdly plain now that Conkling can-_ not be re-elected except by the ald of the dem- Ocratic votes. These Yote3 caunoS be had unless one of the U. S. Senators is given to the Gemocrats. It would be no “‘vladication” of Mr. Conkling to return to ths Senate witha democratic colleague, granted to his political opponents as the pric? of his own election. The stalwarts ace still counting upon the power of the machine to foree all the wavering republicans over tothe Conkling side; but it 13 already made plain that this cannot be done, ———20e--______ Boston 13 hard at work on the project of having a world’s fair in that elty. probably in 1585, and with very good prospects for success. It would bea humiliation for New York if Bo3- ton, with less than one-third of her population and weaith, should find the money and en- terprise to carry out what the commerctal capl- tal of the country was compelled to abanion for want of these essentials, And there need be no fears, elther, that the work will not be Well dame if undertaken. Boston has or can raise plenty of capital for the purpose; she has beth iiberality and gcod taste; and moreover her Public interests are generaliy managed with uncemmon honesty and ality.
