The north and west halls on the main floor were blocked up by desks and cbairs and carpets, which had become soaked by the water which dripped from the ceiling ofevery room. Clerks were engaged in collecting and classifying books and re- cords which were sadly mixed up during the fire yesterday, while some lounged about as if not knowing what to do, and wondering whether there would ba any discharges in consequence of the conflagration. The fire was circumscribed within the | Walls of the north and west fronts. Nothing in the east wing was burned, al- though several of the cases were considera- bI§ scorched. The damage by water, how- ever, throughout the building is considera- ble. The rooms of the north front were well deluged wiih water and nearly all the car- pets bave been rained. The water has per- colated threugh the marbie sides and col- umops in the east wing and required cou- stant mopping of the floors to-day to make them passable. THE COMBUSTIBLE ROOF-WORK.
