ANOTHER GREAT FIRE BROKE OUT This morning shortly after 11 o'clock a fire took place in what is known as the “Green House under the roof of the Patent Of fice building and direetiy over the portico of the west or vith street front. Meanwhile the terror stricken employes of the department, when notified of their dan- ger, had left the baliding, many of them de- parting 80 hastily as to leave hats, bonne shawls and other wearing apparel behin Alarge crowd, numbering probably persons, gatnered on G, F and 9th streets to watch the progress of the flames, which at noon seemed to be making headway, not- withstanding the efforts of the fire depart- ment. Lines of hose were run through the windows at different peints, and firemen could be seen on the top of the building reeting the operations below. About fit Minutes past 12 o'clock the ROOF OF THE WESTERN WING FELL IN, and soon afterwaris the fire was discovered rapidly making its way along the G street Wing, towards 7th street. Tne cases contaln- ing the models of the Patent Office could at thik time be seen enveloped in fire, while clouds of burning papers, tbe records o! the Land and Patent Office, could be seen float Ing upwards. At Unis time the walls of the west front still stood, bat large cracks began toshow themselves between the blocks of marble, and it was feared that notwithst and. ing their great thickaess they might fall. THE “MODEL ROOM” DESTROYED. The upper part of the buildiag—the loft under the roof—was mostly filled with inm- mense piles of papers and documents from the bureaus in the lower part of the building, wiile the upper story proper, wader the lofi, contained probably the finest collection of models ic the world, which 1t is impossible to replace, as many of the: date back to th= early days of the Patent Office. There was also on this floor large numbers of maps, &c. These all being in wooden cases, the fire spread rapidly from one to the o'her. ‘The floors of tee building are on brick arches wad consequently the lower part of the building Was not reached by the fire, but the water played sad havoc with ths books aud papers below. 1249 P.M. The engines are playing on the Thompson and Wright buildings on G street, which will probably be saved. Some of the employes of the office are engaged picking up records which blew out of the windows. The walls thus tarstand firm. The firemen are work- ing like Troja and the police have drawn a cordon along G street to keep back the large crowd. “Thank God!" exclaimed a man in the crow d, **This will give work to the poor!” A TINDER BOX UNDER THE ROOF. Last Thursday, Inspector of Buildings Thomas M. Plowman was cailed upon by Acting Superintendent Mills, of that build- ing, to examine the upper portion of ths 9th street wing with reference to ita capacity to Support about one hundred tons of tile pa- pers. He found that @ large quantity of shelving to store files on bad beea put in | Over the topmost ceiling arches next to the zeof, or beiween these points, which had never been occupted for auy purpose. He was on a laider was seized by Assistant Chief Drew and thrown out of danger. SECRETARY SCHURZ, Assistant Secretary Bell, and other promi- nent officials were inside and outside during the fire directing the movements of the fire- men. THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL. The fire is now (at 1:15 p.m.) purning In the northeast upper corner of the building, but 1s wholly under control, and will not hevatiee ped extend further. As it is it has rned out the upper story on two sides—the vith streets wings THE Loss. It is of course utterly impossible to even Approximate the loss to the goverament. Thousands of valuable public docaments have been destroyed, and the most of the model room of the Patent Office destroyed. The model room contained abont 304.000 models, and was the only ingptution of the kind in tho world. The walls still stand firm, and there is no danger of their falling. The lots to the building can be repaired by Congressional appropriation’; lose which eann calculated, ch tasevere one. At half-past 12 o'clock the fire was at its height in the Patent off The scene was one of awful grrodeur. The cold, classic outline of the building was w&emed up with & background of seething flame, enrling, hissing, darting first here and there, taxing no fixed course, but, devouring everything Within its reach. Fron each of the heavy windows on the std and G-strest fronts there were sheets of flame, curling upwards until lost In volumes of smoke, swept away by the wind, Thousands were upon the street, rushing here and there. Polieemea were frantic in their efforts to stay the surging throng of humanity encompassing the build- ing, ard, detpite their efforts to keep the crowd back, many people en¢roached with- in the ropes, much to their own discomfort, and to the anuoyauce of the hard-working firemen. Toward one o'clock the outlook for a com- munication of the flames along 7th street Was quite ominous. Taking time by the ferelock, and anticipating the worst, some of the clothing merchants began moving their stock toward H streel, where there was com- paralive safety. THE WATER SUPPLY. Appreciating the gravity of the situation, Col. Timothy Lubey, water registrar, in order to give the fire departraent an abun- dant supply of water, caused the stops of the s-inch main on New Jersey and Massachu- fetts avenues to be closed, and opened the 0 inch stop on Capitol Hill'so ag to give the vartment the whule force of the large main Tred to. ae During the fire most of the restaurants in the vielnity of Lhe couflagration were closed. A few remained open, however, and did a rushing business. 145 P.M. The fire at this writing has extendel tothe center of the 7Uh street front, and is now satd to be under control. At lil o'clock @ battalion of United Stater marines were stationed in front of the city pos! office entrance to make free logress and egress thereto, which had beea obstracted. THE DAMAGE BY THR ¥IRE will be almost wholly confined to the model room and lig archives. All the papers per- laining to the other bureaus of the depart- ment remain intact. THE CALL ON BALTIMORE FOR HE. When it became apparent that our fire de- partment was insuficient to cope with the devouring element, Secretary Schurz teie- porns to the mayor of Baltimore for help water, Assistant Secretary Beil requesied the District Comunissiouers to send to Balti- more for aid, and Commissioner Bryan at once sent a dispatch to the tire department of that elty to send over all the firemen aud ap- paratus ihey could spare. FAST TIM The first fire apparatus from Baltimore ar. rived here soon acter 1 o'clock, having made the run from Baltimore, it is said, in the un- precedented time of 32 minutes. On ihe Sth and F street wiugs of the baild- ng the fire bas been completely extio ished. Robrer, U8. Navy, worked by Dan Johnson at the plug he north west corner of the Post Office building, readered valuable service. THE MARINES. Shortly after 1 o’clock a detachment of U. S. marines, 54 men, in command of Capt. Nokes, arrived on the ground, and another detachment of about 40 men, under Capt. Coliter, came shortly after, and were placed al various points in and about the building, to guard the government property. A SEARCHING INVESTIGATION TO BE OR- DERED. There is a good deal of speculation as to how the fire should have gained such head- way In & building presumably fireproof, and supposed to be under the zealous vigil of eccres Of watchmen and attendants in the mcdel room. It does seem strange, and there can seemingly be no excuse for the charge of criminal carelessness with some one. Secretary Schurz will make @ most searching investigation. The Origin of the Fire. A great many reports as to the origin of the fire were circulated. The one that was Most generally credited at first was that the fire started in the green house by the rays of the sun coming through the glass roof, which made a focus and ignited some cotton, wiich Was placed around @ valuable plant. The Técu house was in the very top of the build. bg, in the southwest cormer, extending 75 fect from F street up 9th street. The model room for rejected models of ali kinds came 1ext to the green house and extended aloug the building under the roof. These modeis hed become dry with age, and when the fire nee reached them it spread very rapidly. Avoiber th . more generally accepted afverwards, was t@ flue for keating the treen house commanicated the fire. This icew was dispelled, homever, wnen it be- came known that no fire had been started tere this season yet. The most, = @ explanation is given by Mr. T. F. Wilson, who was employed at the time in that vicloity in storing old files iu what bad originally been a graph gallery, and Mr. John T. Sil » wa was in charge of the green house. Mr. Wil- son was the first to seethe s noke In the green house, and gave the alarm of fire, but the dense smoke and Intense heat one from evtering. ‘At Wilson's alarm Sib. ley bastened to immediately Wise ey eee Doards to keep’ A ie bat itis the | This | before it gained any headway was generally very easy.
