The casual observer ih viewing the sightly blucks of marble and granite which enter largely into thetr construction, is im- ressed wiih the mujesiy and grandeur of ber proportions, but one little dreams that Learly ail of them, while not of themselves che or Linder boxes, are stored to the very eaves with combustible matter, od, would jeopaniize the tire building. Much has been said and more written concerning the flre-proof build ings in this city. In poiut of fact, there is bul one of our entire list of butidiags which approximates being fire-proof, and that is THE NEW STATE DEPARTMENT. The roof of this granite structure is of iroa covered with sheathings of copper, beneath which, instead of a sheathing of wood, is a layer of concrete, a patented substance pre- sumed to be fire-proof. Thus far it has not become necessary to stow away under the caves of the building any of the accumulated records of the department. This is not owing to an excessive precaution agatost fire, but rather because the department has not yet accumulated sufficient re sto make it necessary to utilize that INE TREASURY DY PARTMENT. The roof of t Y T OFFICE DEPARTMENT is Fomev similar to the portiom of the Patent Office destroyed by Monday’s fire, ex- cept that brick arches have been placed be- tween the roof and the lower floors. These arches would check the progress of a fire, but ipasmuch as tons of old papers and recoris are stowed away in the space between the reofand the arches, it is believed that if a | fire canght among them that the expansion of heat would be so great that the arches would give way, failto the floor below. and thus give the flames a good chance to sweep through and around the building. THE CarIToL BUILDING is likewise defective in the roof. Mach of its construction is of trop, but sheathing boards covered with copper are used as a layer in all portions of it except that portion occupied »y the Congressional Library, whieh is deemed to be fireproof. Uader all the wings, however, like the other buildings mentio.ed | thereare tons upon tons of documents, which, if once in a mass of flame, might produce a heat sufficient to topple in the dome. THE STRUGGLE FOR TRE BANK Note PRINTIN The bids for printing backs ou egal tender and national bank notes, which were opened at the Treasury department yesterday, show very cose calculation. The owes bids, those of the bureau of engraving ard printing, were two cents lower per thou sand in one class, and seventy-two cents in the other. Under the existing contracts the price paid for this work is 815 per thousand, against an average of #5. under the new bids. The saving to the department will be over 50 per cent. of the cost, and will exesed #45000 during the coming year. The present contractor bid #11 and the New York companies, which formerly had the contract at still higher rates, bid from $10 50 to $11 per thousand. The bank note companies de intend to have the government work award- ed to the bureau of engraving aud printing Without a struggle. The counsel for the bank note companies has prepared an elaborate argument endeavoring to prove that the U. 8. Internal revenue stamps cannot legally be made by the bureau of engraving aud printing. AMERICAN LEATHER AND SHOES IN HoLLanp.—Heretofore the United States has been the great market for European mapa- factures, but this order of things Is being suddenly reversed, for not only are Ameri- can manufactures driving European m factures out of our markets, but they have begun to compete most successfuily with European manunfactarers in the European markets. To cite a single instan : ported to the Department of S. Consul at Amsterdam: Daniel Loel largely exported is lly tanned calf skins,to the U: 5 ‘he consul noting tie cessation of these ex- ports, called upon the senior partner for an explanation. His answer was “Weare no longer exporters; we now import from the United States. Affairs in Europe are about being turned topsy-turvy by the Yankees.” not only did they import leather from the United States, but that they bad also mn to import New Englan! shoes, and tt Enropean manufacturers cannot compete either in price or quality with the Americans. The house has receatly sept a large order to New England for shoes, and eae pee was about leaving for the United St to perfect and enlarge their business relations. Tne intelligence and quickness of the New England manufac- turers in adapting thatr goods to the special- ties and peculiarities of the market greatly facilitate the trade. sont ree REPUBLICAN TICKET AND PLATFORM IN NEw JEgSEY.—The republican convention of New Jersey met ys y and nomi- pated Wm.
