The first-class pews Were first put up—those in the center aisle numbered from 79 to_100,0n which the an- nual reotal is %150. The first bid was £25, and the choice was bought by Mr. H.S. Da- yis for £400, and he selected No. %. Mr. T. L. Hume bought the second choice for $190; andelectea No. 95; W. M. Shuster the third for $50; and selected No. 88. A few other pews were then sold and the sale was then postponed until Mona: Tix FORMATION oF HABITS.—We are all smiliar with this process. A movement or serice of movements, at first painfully dif- fieult and requiring the whole thought and attention, by repetition become so easy and semi-automatic that attention is no longer necessary. The most remarkable example of these. such as walking, speaking and the like, probably belong partly to the third category; the capacity for these is partly in- herited. Playing ona musical instrament is, therefore, @ betterexample. Weall know the painful attention necessary at first, and the ease and rapidity of the most comp'ex movements at ined by practice. Now, by what means, anatomical or physiological, do these at first difficult movements become, by repetition, easy? The answer in neral terms, seems tobe this. Every volitional act is attended with a change in the brain, which, however, is slight, liable to be af- fected by subsequent changes, and therefore evanescent. If the same act, however, be repeated many times, the change es deep and permanent—becomes petrified in brain-structure; and this structure, whai- ever be its character or its seat, determines the appropriate acts with precision. It is as if every volitional act produced a faint line, Hable to be erased, on the tableis of the rain; by running over the same lines many times these into grooves are ani finally into ruts, and motion in these be- comes easy and certain, because the ruts guide the motion instead of the will. The ‘epetition produces structure and stracture 1 determines habit.— Professor Joseph Le Con'e. AN EpiTor’s SAFEGUARD.—A Georgia editor has printed the following “Notice” over his own 81 ‘ture in the Cuthbert Mes- senger: ‘On after this date the under- signed gives notice that he will pro.ecate apy person selling him intoxicating liquors of any kind to the full extent of the law. This is not for the purpose of injuring whisky dealers, but to get sober and stay so.” &7 Strike from mankind the principle of faith and men would have no more history than a flock of sheep, &7-Rey. Editor Star:— Permit me to call the atten- tion of the authorities in charge of the Im- opty of the grounds east of the Capi- il tosome of the inconveniences to which pep ag et nie gered and near the Capi- tol are subjected. While the improvements were in progress we were willing and expect- ed to submit to many inconveniences, but Dow tbat they are about completed for this year, we desire to have some better accom- Modations than we now have and kome bet- terattention paid to those things which aro | absolutely necessary to relieve us during | our winter campaign across these grounds. Every person who was present at the funeral services of our late Vice President will bear me witness that the mud on the space east of the Capitol from B street north to B strget south was deep enough to satisfy any conn- tryman or disgust any lady who was com- Peal to cross it. People who ive oe the 11] and who pass every day by the north or south wing of the building are obliged to walk or wade through this every rainy day or go squares out of the way, when & stone or concrete crossing direct from the north and south walks around the Cap- itol east to the circles would entirely relieve ussofar. Next to this, that bed of sand Which has been put around the circles for a walk Is no better calculated to make a hard durable walk than so much hominy, and is nothing more or less than a positive nut- sance, tetious when dry and soaked with water every rain. on aceonntof the misera- ble drainage. People having occasion to cross there usually prefer the curnstone. or from compulsion, or take a long walk around the square. Before the sand was puton we bad a fair walk of gravel (bad enough to be sure), with a beard walk of slender propor- tions for wet weather, and instead ot better. ing the thing with sand have simply mate it @ perfect nuisance. There is noearthly rea son why @ walk throngh the circles direct from the wings of the Capitol to A. north and south, should not have been made when the circles were laid out, without injury to the ornamentation of the grounds and not com- Rel us to go twice the distance to get across. Weare willing, however, to submit to this if they will takeaway thesand nnisanceand give ns somethiog we can walk on, if only a twoinch thick plank. Money enongh has beer spent. or worse than spent on thes3 walks and drives to have given them a dura- ble concrete pavemeni twice. Dear gentle- men give uk good crossings and walks across th: se grounds to relieve us this winter. The crossings that heave been laid to the street cars don’t help us any; they are ont of the Way entirely. Relieve us and receive the thanks of every pedestrian on Capito. HILL. GEORGETOWN. Weare accustomed to consider flies as a nuisance, but according to Mr. Em: rson, an English chemist, they play an important part in the economy of nature. Mr. Emer- Son states that he begau bis self-appointed task of finding out whether tne house fly really servesan appreciable purpoce in the scheme of creation, excepting as an indiffer- ent scavenger, by capturing a fine spectmen and gluing his wings down to a microscope slide. On pow the slide under the instra- ment, to the investigator’s disgust the fly appeared covered with lice, causing the ending insect to be promptly released and another substituted Mm bis —. Fly No.2 ‘was no better off than fly No.1,and as the same might be predicted of flies 3, 4, 5 (or of u flies as the algebras have it), Mr. Emerson con- cluded that here was something which at once required looking into. Why were the flies lousy? Meanwhile fly No. 2, on the slide, seemed to take his position very coolly, and, extending his proboscis, began hecho itover his body as if he had just alighted. A glance through the microscope, however, showed that the operation was not one of the beautification; for wherever the lice were, there the trunk went. The lice were disap- pearing into the trank; the fly was eating them. Up to this time the Investigator had treated his specimen as of the masculine gender; but now he changes his mind and concludes it to be a female, busily devour- ing, not lice, but her own progeny. The flies then carry their young about them; and when the family get too numerous, the mother too bungry, the offspring are eaten. Awhile reasoning thus, Mr. Emerson picked uP a scrap of white writing paper, from which two files had appeared to be busily eating something, and put it under the in- strument. There were the progeny again on the paper, and easily rubbed off with a cloth. “This,” he says, “set me thinking. I took the pa into the kitchen again and waved ft around, taking care that no filles touched it; went back to the microscope, and there found animaicules, the same as on fites. Thad now arrived at something definite, they were not the progeny of the fly, but animalcules floating in the air; and the Se motions of the flies gathered them on eir bodies, and the flies then went into some quiet corner to have their dainty meal.” The investigator goes on to describe how he continued the experiment in a var.e- ty of localities, and how, in dirty and badly smelling ’ quarters, ‘he found the myriads of flies which existed there literally covered with animaticules, while other flies, captured in bedrooms or well-ventilatc i, clean apartments, were miserably lein and entirely free from their prey. Wherever filth existed, evolving germs which mizht generate disease, there were the flies cover- ing themeelves with the minute organism and greedily devouring the same. It remains now for some investigator to discover the use of the mosquito. Some one bas said that nature created them inorder to compe! us, in self-defense, to drain our marshes and cultivate our waste Jands. it may well be, however, that, lik® the fly, they also prey on animalcule, and thas uot @ greater pest than they are them- selves.
