The latter started for Philadelphia this morning. PERSONAL.— Senator Wright this morning received @ dispateh from his home in Iowa announcing the sudden death of his son, seven years ofage. He immediately left for Iowa. How. JoHN W. JoHNSTON was yesterday re-elected United States Senator by the Vir- ginia Legislature by a strict party vote, the republicans casting their full vote for Gen'l Ww. C. Wickham. “ALASKA County.”—Senator Mitchell, of Oregon, yesterday made a lengthy argu- ment before the Committee on Territories in favor of his bill providing a civil govern- ment for Alaska, by attaching it to Wash- ington territory. SENATOR LOGAN arrived in town last evening. He stood the journey from Chicago tolerably well, but is still suffering a good deal, and may not be able to take part in the deliberations of the Senate tor several days. Of course Mrs. Logan is withhim. They are at 808 Twelfth street. IT WAS EVIDENT from the remarks of Mr Thurman and other democratic Senators to- day, that the resolution of Mr. Mortoua, pro- viding for an investigation of the late elec- tion in Mississippi, will provoke consider- ble discussion, and that a vote will hardly be reached uutil after the recess, THE FRENCH SPoLiaTion CLAIMS.—The agents of the heirs of James H. Causten and other French spoliation claimants have me- morialized the Senate to request the Presi- dent to procure, through our minister to France, the return of the evidences of loss sustained by citizens of this country, which were forwarded to France, and which are ba en to still exist among the archives of the French government. ARMY ORDERS.—The leave of absence granted Second Lieutenants Frederick W. Kingsbury, 2d cavalry, (Fort Laramie, Wyo- ming territory,) from barrens ye depart- ment of the Platte, is extended five months; Commissary Sergeant Charies Brown, U.S. A., now on six months’ furlough from Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota terri » Will, upon expiration of said furlough, report in to the Commissary General of Sub- sistence in this city. RANK OF THE PAYMASTER GENERAL.— An effort to restore the office of paymaster general to the old rank of brigadier general was made yesterday in the Senate by the introduction of @ bill by Mr. Burnside pro- viding that the rank of the officer holding the eae be that of a brigadier general, and further providing that the rank of General Alvord, the present incumbent, date from the day he entered upon the duties of his office. THE NEWSPAPER MEN of Washington who will visit Philadelphia with the centen- nial excursion party, have been invited by the journalists of that city to ‘take of an entertainment upon their arrival in Phila- delphia this evening. An invitation was also received from Colonel Alexander R. McClure, of the Philadelphia Times, to dine with bim this evening. This last invitation could not be accepted because of the invita- tion of the Philadelpbia Press Club. THE CASE OF AUDITOR McGREW.-The nomination of Mr. J. M. McGrew to be the sixth auditor of the Treasury for the Post Office department, which was referred to the Finance Committee, has not yet been re- ported to the Senate. An independent re- ublican Senator to-day expressed the opin- lon that he will be confirmed. It is under- Stood that the Finance Committee are in- Vestigating certain charges against Mr. McGrew, and that their report will depend on the result of the investigation. OLD VESSELS wITH NEW NAMES.—The House spent to-day’s session in an effort to change the name of the steamboat Tom Jasper to “The Centennial.” The opposi- tion to the passage of this class of bilis was from the fact that such legislation often oc- casions vexatious delays i juits brought against boats in their former names, and which necessitates the amendment of the papers in the case. Old boats with new names are so often inted up, giving them the ap- pearance of first-class vessels, when they are actually in an unfit condition to car-y paseengers. NoMINATIONS.—The President sent the following nominations to the Senate to-day: George F. Seward, of California, to be envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to China; James Birney, of Michigan, to be minister to the Netherlands; George E.
