Several Persons Killed and Wounded —_—_—_ THE VIRGINIA SENATORSHIP. THE WHISKY FRAUDS. Striking mts Ex; Re to the Chicago 3 New York, Dec. 15.—To-day's Times bas the following: The following dispatch is used irom @ special correspondent detailed to investigate the whisky :rauds in Chicago: CHICAGO, Dec. 15.—To-day, for the first time, it has become known with politicians Unat there was a gigantic whisky ring, with its beadquarters in Chicago, similar in all Mississippi, and also setting forth that the | material —— to the whisky rings of legislature electcd at the same time and by | 8t. Louis, iiwaukee, Evansville, and ‘he same means will have the election of a | probably New Orleans’ I t has been im- possible heretofore to make that statement With any degree of certainty. Owing to official complications CALCULATED TO SUPPRESS DEVELOPMENTS there has been nothing but surface indica- Uons since the first seizure. Tne grand jury found indictments against only a few of the distillers and rectifiers and guagers. It went no hey widend there was nothing but the present disposition of every commanity to sus all persons that justified the as- sociation of higher official personages with the revenue frauds. There bas also been a persistent effort on the part of interested persons to spread tbe impression that the revenue frauds in this city were merely the result of individual and independent efforts, that is that there was no combiuation out- side of each individual distiller with bis guager, #nd no central and systematic ORGANIZATION FOR PLUNDE! extending to the bi revenue offic! and implying an official guarautee of protection against exposure and pauishment. This theory has generally accepted hereto- fore and received confirmation tu the charac- ter of the indictments returned. It is now reasonably certain that the theory ts entirely false and that the revenue frauds Lave been worked out by the same meaus and through the same machi and with the same SYSTEMATIC DIVISION OF SPOILS as in St. Louis. The facts seem to justify the assertion that bad it not been for ihe recent change in the office of United States District fea in this city, this phase of the Chi- ees —, Boon — caste A have been pul y devel 5 prosecutions against the individual distillers and gaugers would have been on the same basis as the indict ment pending against them; and though they might have led to some individual con- victions, there would have been no general exposure. Now, however, there will be an immediate movement for the empanneling of a new United States grand jury. And it area that the evidence to be presented t wi RIP OPEN THE WHOLE CONSPIRACY, and fix the nature and of the guilt of every man implicated. There is abundant reason tosay, however, thatample testimony will be forthcoming to expose the Chicago ripg as thoroughly as the St. Louis ring has been ex) , and thata panic has already set evo cy dispatch ~yry = names of several persons alleged to be im- plicated in the :rauds. 1HE GREAT EAT IDGEPORT Less of Life and Heavy Destruction of Property. Mr. Stevenson submittr4 a resolution call- Ing upon the peta d of the Treasary to trexsmit copies of ali letters, telegrams, orders and instructions in his possessiou re- lating to tbe alle; violations of the inter- nal revenue laws at St. Louis, Milwaukie and Chicago. as may in his opinion be com- patible with the padlic taterests. Mr. Sherm2” objected to the resolution. He said to. omply With it would embarrass the Secretary very much. He said this whisky ring was to be prosecated to the utmost, so that no guilty man should escape, and he happened to have learned this very morning thst it would hinder the prosecu tion very much if the Secretary was called on for this information. Mr. Conkling held that if the resolution Was proper at all, it should go to the Presi- dent, and leave to him the privilege of de- termining whether the information could be furnish without detriment to the public interest. Mr. Morton believed this publication would have the effect of vindicating the aiminis- tration of every charge which had beeu made against it in this connection. He believed that it would completely vindicate the President from all the charges made agaipst them. For this reason he had no ob- Jection to the resolution. After some little farther discussion, Mr. Stevenson withdrew his resolution. The Senate then went into executive ses- sion, and then adjourned.
