This necklace is a fac simile of the original #45 chain in gold, and is made up in 18-Karat gold plate, and selis at #5. He has also re- ceived an exquisite article in sleeve buttons, With the most brilliant Lake George dia- monds set in jet and gold, the outer edges of the jet being surrounded with avery delicate and highly polished rim of gold, the effect of which is very beautiful. Ashe ueared the reef he cleared it with oue leap of fally 200 feet, and skimmed over the shallow water inside, until he landed bigh and dry on the sard beach, directly in frontof Mr. J. W. Pfluger’s seaside cottage. Here he was seiz- ed by @ native, who, however was unable to bali bim, the huge fish floundered about Lill he floally goti to the water. A crowd of natives corailed him, and the water near shore being too shallow to allow him to use his fins toany advantage, they soon killed him with an ax. It proved to be a species of the sword-fish, measuring 8 feet in length, while his sword measures 36 inches. The latter may be seen in our office. He appears to have been frightened by the Repulse, and shot like an arrow through the water and over the reef with such extraordin: spect that he could not stop till out of his native element and high on land. Those who wit- nessed it say that it was a most excitin, seene. These sword fishes are very powerfal. We remember Capt. Stone telling of au inci- dent which occurred while he was runnin, the rf Josephine between this port ‘and Jarvis Island, about 1858. The brig was an extraordinary sailer, and while going at her full speed, ten miles an bour, she was struck directly under the stern counter with such a shock a8 to jar the whole vessel and to awaken the captain out ofasound sleep, who supposed that the brig had struck a whale or areef. Immediately the pumps were started, but there was no water In the hold. Qn re- turning to port the brig was hove oat to find the caiire of the shock, when, near the stern post, imbedded in the thick plank, the blade of @ sword was found. fully twenty inches in length. To have hit the brig under the counter the fish must have been going in the same direction as the vessel; and one may imagine the speed with which it moved to have ra Sword twenty inches through the planking. It must have been going at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour, and evidently intended to hit the brig, Penge! it to have been a whale. From this one can get a faint idea of the fights which take deep.— He 3 ace among the monsters of the u Gazette, Sept. 1. 82-An Towa paper reports that a frisky youth of eighty-five and a gushing maiden ofthe same age were married in Greene county in that state, the other day, andhave bought a house and gone to house-keeping at Old Rippey. 87-A reporter being called to account for the statement that acertain meeting “was @ large and respectable one,” when only one other person beside himself was preseat, insisted that bis rt was literally true; for, said he, **I w: jarge and the other man Was respectable.” s@-If a bill is accepted under the belief that the accompanying security Is good, when in fact it is worthless, this is not such a mis- take of fact as will entitle the drawee to re- cover back the amount from the payee.
