WASHINGTON: TUESDAY. «October 12. 1875. CROSBY S. NOYES........Editor. BS Circulation More than Double that of any other Daily Paper | published in Washington. To-day’s Elections. Elections will beheld to-day in Ohig, lowa and Nebraska. The most important fs that of Ohio. The republican ticket in Ovlo Is composed as follows :—For Governor, Ruth- erford B. Hayes; Lieutenant Governor, Thos. L. Young; Judge of the Supreme Court, (eo. W. Mclivaine; Auditor, James Willisms; Attorney General, John Little; Treasurer, John M. Milliken; Member of Board of Pab- Me Works, Peter Thatcher. The democratic Ueket is made up as follows, Governor Al- Jen having been nominated for re-election :— For Govervor, William Alien; Lieutenant Governor, Samuel “F. Cary; Judge of Sa- preme Court, T.G. Ashburn; Auditor, E. M. Greene; Attorney General, Thos. E. Powell; Treasurer, John Schreiner; Member of Board of Public Works, H.E ©. Hagan. For Pres- Ment, in 1872, Ohio gave Grant 231,352, Gree- Jey 244,521, O'Conor 1,1¢3, Black 2,100. For governor, in 1873, the state gave Noyes, re- Publican, 213,837; Alien, democrat, 214,354; Collins, “homelezs” party, 10, Prohibition, 10,081. Allen was thus elected by 817 plurality, but al! the rest of the re- publican candidates for state offices were Chosen. In 1874 the vote for secretary of state, the highest officer chosen, was :—Re- publican, 221,204; democratic, 238,406; proi- tion, 7,415. Next in importance to the Ohio election is that in Iowa, which is for state officers, one balf the members of the State Senate, and all the members of the House of Representa- tives. The republican ticket for state officers reads: For Governor, Samuel J. Kirkwood; Lieutenant Governor, Joshua G. Newbold; Judge of the Supreme Court, Austin Adams; Superintendent of Public Instrac- tion, Alonzo Abernethy. The democratic ticket is made up as follows: Governor, Shepherd Leffler; Lieutenant Governor, E. B. Woodward; Judge of the Supreme Court, L. 0. Hatch; Superintendent of Public In- struction, A. R. Wright. The vote in Iowa Of late years has been as follows: In 1812, for President, Grant had 131,566; Greeley, 71,196; O’Conor, 2,221. In 1813, for Governor, the re- Ppublicans east 105,143 votes, and the opposi- tion, calling themselves ant! monopolists, 82,578. In 1814, for secretary of state, the re- publicans cast 107,243, and the oppositios 79,060. In Iowa the democrats and republicans are classed, as in Ohio, as inflationists and anti- inflationists, respectively; but the issue has not been worked up so much as in Ohio, the chief interest being in the legislative elec- tons, as the new legislature will choose a United States Senator to succeed George G. Wright, republican, whose term expires in 1sit. The present legislature is republican by @ majority of nineteen. in Nebraska the election Is for three judges of the supreme court, six regents of the uni- versity, and several members of the legisla- ture to fill vacancies. The Nebraska legisla- ture, which is republicaa by a large majority, Will also elect @ United States Senator. ————__-~+ee-- ‘Tbs prospect for the restoration of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company to asound footing does not appear to be very bright. A receiver was appointed for the first mortgage bond-holders on Saturday. At one time this road, which was completed from Richmond to the Onio river before the panic, promised to be an tmy ortant line con- necting Washington with the cities of Cin- cinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, ete. The de- fault of interest on its first mortgage bonds seems to have greatly impaired its credit. ‘The latter were selling in New York on Sat- urday as low as twenty-five, though it is but ashort time since they were quoted at double those figures. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, of Richmond, on Friday last, a committee reported that after @ full examination they bad come to the conclusion that the road could be made the most useful by completing the connecting link from Huntington, on the Ohio river, to Mt. Sterling, in Kentucky, @ gap of eighty- eight miles, at @ cost of $1,500,000. and re. commending that Richmond, Va., subscribe $800,000 and Kentucky $700,000 for that pur- pose. This would insure a new, direct, ali- rail line from Washington to the West. The Teport was adopted. ————“—<e2-___ The elevated rapid transit railway in New ‘York is to be built by the Manhattan Rail- ‘way company, with a capital stock of $2,000,000, divided into twenty thousand shares of $100 each. The road is to be trom fifteen to twenty miles in length, and will cost from $6,000,000 to $3,000,000. The greater part of the money is to be raised by the sale of bonds, which the law authorizes to be issued. The Herald is of the opinion that any railway so planned will ba burdened at the outset so that its successful operation ‘Will be almost impossible, and says that if anything Is clear as the result of our rallway #ystems in America it is that the business of issuing bonds enough to bulld a road Is a mistake, as the selling of bonds will be an expensive, wasteful process, entailing bank- rs’ commissions and endless costs. 1t urges that the entire road be built by subscription. Stanley's African explorations have al- ready developed enough maierial to make a Sirst-class new wonder-book for the boys, to say nothing of the facts gained of interest and importance to scientists aud the general public. Among the tid-bits promised in the fortheoming narrative are details of arduous marches through an unknown country of jungles, swamps and mountains; fierce con- Micts with savage tribes new to the sight of the white man; marvelous reports of regions Peopled by dwarfs and giants; suppers made on lion's meat; stories of a breed of dogs as big as dunkeys—in fact, “food for every taste,” as the London Telegraph puts it by way of appetizing announcement to the coming chapters. — see. According to the official statistics only 9,49 immigrants landed at New York last month—a falling off of 7,600 as compared with the month of September, 1874 If this de- crease continues the people of the United States will soon have to depend upon their Own resources in populating the country. A singular fact in last months’ report is that England furnished more emigrants than any other country. oe By all means give the Beecher jury “extra pay.” They richly earned it in sitting sev- era! months and submitting to the infliction of a daily deluge of filth. Let them have their “back pay.” 0. F.-GRAND 1. O Lo! eee we z . A. ay bee eye 1th okga.
