The Harrisburg Telegraph of Tuesday says that at a picnic party near Morgantown, Berks county, the other day, Miss Annie kK. Johnson, of Baltimore, met with a most remarkable accident. A rope swing bad been attached to the limb of & tree fully thirty feet from the ground, and Miss Jobnson, being of a daring disposition, insisted on being swung as high as the gentle- men present could swing her. The sport was continued for ome time, when suddenly Mies Jobnson’s head was noticed to drop toone side, ber mucies relaxed, her arms let go their hold and drop, and away the unfortunate girl was hurled through the air. The momentum of the swing carried the apparently lifeless form of the girl up fully thirty-five feet from the gtound, and lodged her between two branches st the point where they join the trunk of a tree, which stood about thirty-eight feet from the tree to which the rope was attached. It required only a few miuutes’ deliberation for the gentle- men to realize the situation and determine whet todo. It was fully twenty feet from the ground to the first limb above, and the trunk of tbe tree about three feet in diameter. They backed the wagon with its cauvas directly under the tree, so that, in case she would drop, her fall would be partially broken. The swi was hurriedly taken down, and in an instant one end of the rope was thrown over the limbs ot the otber tree and secured below. By this means two gentlemen of the party hurriedly went up the rope, and in a few minutes were at the side of the unfortunate girl, She was just returning to conscionsness, and the force of her fall had so securely wedged her between the trunk and the limbe as to require no little eifort to extricate ber. Miss Johnson at once realized her fearful situation. She was pale and weak, but still had the ops sense to do as the gentle- men desired. The rope was pulled up, a slip knot was made and passed around her body under the arms, and the other end passed around the limb, and in this manner she was lowered to the ground in safety. With the exception of a few severe bi and scratches she sustained no injury. A Doe Amore Porrorses.—The Cape May Datly Wave tells a etury of a Newfoundland dog :—While with his master during a stroll on the beach, the master noticed a large school of fish — in close to the breakers, followed by a great drove of porpoises, that were rolling and pouncing through the water in apparent excitement with the grand chase frightened finnies. The dog Carlo, noticing the rumpus, and being encouraged by his master to venture out amoug the sea-pigs, gave a shrill bark, and started out as ee ally as @ dog of cork floating over the billows. Onward he plunged, and upon reaching the porpoises he set upa terrible yelping, to the consternation of the sea-pigs, for dog barking among the sea residents is an unusual thing. Carlo now plunged, firet ror one porpoise and then for an- other, and so excited the whole company that a grand charge was made, and Carlo was oblig. to beat a retreat, which be did in great haste, followed by scores of the enemy, Jomping. snorting and tumbling about, evidently muc! delignted at putting the New foundiand stranger to fight. The dog was chased close in shore, his pursuers only retiring after getting among the breakers. Upon an éxamination of Carlo after his novel venture Mr. Carson found that he bad been severely lashed in the side, and had had one ear partly bitten off. This, we believe, is the first instance on record of a dog goingout to battle with the hosts of the sea. —————_—_____.
