Anthosy’s Conunection wi New York, August 6.—A Chicago dispatch says the Tribune prints a letter concerning the connection of Susan B. Anthony with the Beecher-Tilton matter. The writer is a lady resident here, and is well known in philan- thropic and reformeircies. Her name is with- held at her request. She says: Three years ago the pest winter, in January,! saw Miss An- thony for the first time in my life. (n that oc- casion she urged me very strangely to become identified with the suffrage movement in this city. Lrephedto her that as long as the then almost scandalous divisions between the New York and New England factions existed—now happily healed—I felt no attraction toward either party. She then proceeded to say that the blame of this strife rested largely upon the New England faction; that they had falsely accused her of hoiding free love doctrines, while some of their own number were guilty of not only holding, but practising them. For in- stance, Mr. Beecher, the first president of the joston Fociety, was criminally guilty concern- irg a certain married woman of Brooklyn whose naneIdid not ask, nor did she give it. But she continued, “Mr. Beecher will never attack us—that isthe New York wing—again.” This was the reason she — for theassertion. She said that when the Boston wing began to abuse Mrs. Stanton, she (Susan B. Anthony) know- ing facts about Beecher went to him and asked him if he proposed to stand by a party that so accused & woman Whom he knew to be as pure and exemp! as Mrs. Stantou. Then she went on to tell him what she knew of his prac- tices, He made ro denial of these charges, but came down at once, and said ‘Susan, what do you want me to do?” “You know,” she said to me, ‘the was Henry Ward Beecher, ana I could not tell him he should resign at once, but I did Bay that be should not euffer himself to be re- elected. and that he should utterly withdraw his support from that faction,’ and, said Susan, “from that moment he bas never squeaked.” THRODORE TO RBLIZABETH. New Yorg, August 6.—Mr. Tilton sent the following note to his wife yesterday : My Dear Elizabeth :—I send you this note, en- closing a letter from our daughter Florence. Yours affectionately, Tueopogs. The Burnt the Steamer Pat Fs. SUPPOSED TO BE THB WORK OF A REVENGREFUL NEGRO. LOUISVILLE, August 6.—The possible origin of the fre on the steamer Pat Kogers is given here as follows:—A bout two weeks ago a negro thief was detected by the watchman on the boat, who fired at but missed him. This negro took deck pamexe on the Pat Rogers when ste left this wharf on Tuesday, and was heard to say to several negroes before starting that he would make it “+ hot as nell for that watchman before the boat reached Cincinnati.” ‘The opinion is expressed by one of the officers of the line here that this negro set the boat on fire and cut the tiller rope. LIST OF THE DROWNED. CixctrNATI, August 6.—In addition to those reported lost off the steamer Pat Kogers yester- Gay, the following-named persons are now believed to have been drowned :—Anva Cook and two children of Simon Gostner, of Cincin- nati; the wife and child of Dr. Gibbons, of ison, Indiana; A. M. Botts, of North Caro- James Smith, a deck hand. F. M. Stone, of North Carolin: adly burned; also, John H. i Saad ite. They arrived in the city last night. THE GREATEST MISPORTUNE consisted ip the fact that the fire occurred in that particular part of the river, for just there the river was at such a stage that it was impos- sible for the boat to reach the shore, drawing as much water asshe did. The limit of time be- tween the first alarm and when everybedy had left the boat is said to be twenty minutes. At the time there was dry land on the starboard side, only thirty yards distant, but a wall of flames intervened. Or the larboard side land was @ long distance away. The wind was blow- ing toward the nearest shore, and drove the flames in that direction. Many of those who got to the nearest shore are distigured for life, the exposed part of their bodies — actually roasted by the exceasive heat. One of the most THRILLING AND MIRACULOUS BRCAPES was that of Miss L. J. Williams, of Louisville, who threw away her valise and extra clothing, and, after securing the services of a gentleman in throwing overboard a crata of peaches, ahe leaped into the water after it with a life pre- server, where she attempted to cling to the crate. It revolved like a reel, and fur two ter- rible hours she stroggled with the crate, and had just closed her eves in despair when she was drawn into a skiff by Mr. Huff, who ren- dered valuable services in several other cases. Rawden, of Louisville, jum from the boat toward the Indiana shore, and the hungry tongues of flame licking along the surface of water horribly burned her head and face. She had no life-preserver, and secured enly one end of apiank by clinging to the pantaloon leg of @ man who swam past her. She says that while moving through the water, several gasping, drowning persons extended their hands toward her; some even grasping her hair, and tearing it out by handfulle. THE LAST LIVING OBJECT seen on board of tle boat was a little child, three ar four years of age, running about fcreaming with fright, surreunded by flames, and its legs, arms, and face exposed to the ter- rible heat.’ The ‘negro crew behaved badly, hurrying off the boat before there was any im- minent danger, and monopoliing all available means of support. Twocolored men and one white man rowed away in the lifeboat, which could have been used to con twenty or thirty persons to the shore. The river is being Gragged for bodies this morning. The cargo of the boat was valued at about $70,000. Insurance not known. — Mayor Havemeyer’s Answer to the Charges Against Him. Atnany, N. Y., August 6.—Mayor Have- meyer’s answer to charges brought against him are made public to-day. The mayor reviews the charges, and says of the first: ‘As to the neglect of duty in refusing to investigate the offictal conduct of Commissioners Charlick and Gardner, that he believes it to be quite inexpe- dient 2s a general rule for the mayor to insti- tute @ formal investigation into the conduct of beads of departments with a view to their re- moval from office, except upon the making of some grave charge a some responsible party who avows his readiness to maintain it by proof.” As to the next charge of gross miscon- uct in office ani abuse of the appointiag pow- er, the mayor says that he considers that charge from a legal and a moral point of view. Touch- ing the legal ‘question, he says all ‘must agree that Charlick and Gardner were not ineligible fo reappointment after their conviction and resignation, unless they were maile 80 by the provisions of some statute, as he had beea aud is still advieed. In conclusion the mayor says, in order to meet technically the formal part of the accusations made against him, he is to be understood as interposing a plea of not guilty to pores and every one of the charges and speciti- cations. Moul- ton, in reference to said to be in possession of latter, has been made public. RECHER TO MOULTON. The first letter is dated Jaly 23th, from Mr. Beecher — Moulton. He says:—“The com- mittee of investigation are waiting you before closing their labors. I do = wish that you would come and clear yoar m! and memory of everything that can bear on m: case. I pray so to all letters an: papers relating to it, which will throw any light upon it, and bring toa result this protracted case. I trust that Mrs. M. bas been reinvigor- ated, and that her need of your care wili not be #0 great as to detain you.” MOULTON TO BEECHER. Mr. Moulton, under date of August ith, writes: “TI received your note of July #1, intorming me that you are making a statement, and need the letters and papers in my bance, and asking me to send to you for the purpur oxtracte of cuples made from them, as the. may be, that you may use them in your vor.iroversy with Mr. Tu- ten. 1 should be very ae to do anything that I may do consistent with my sense of what is due to justice and right to aid you, but you will re- flect that I hold the important papers intrusted to me at the desire and request, and in the con- fidence of both parties to this unhappy affair. You will see that I cannot, in honor, give them to either party to aid him as against the other. I bave not given or shown to Mr. Tilton any documents or papers relating to your affairs since the renew: of ou my long and, as you, fally beileve, honest and faithful efforts to have you otherwise. I will sacredly hold all the papers and informa- tion I have until both parties shall request me to make them public or to deliver them in the hands of either or both, or to lay them before the committee, or I am compelled, in a court of justice, to produce them, if I can be #0 com- pelied.’ My regret that {am compelled to this course is softened by my delief that you will not be substantially - by it in this regard, for all the facts are, of course, known to you, and — bound to believe rwhp _ = the tement you are preparing you will only set forth the exact facts, and if so the doc: “4 when produced, y tradict what you may say, so that you will satfer no lors. If,on the contrary, which 1 cannot presume, you will only desire the possession of the documents that you may form your state- ment by the facts set forth in them, aiding you to the disadvantage of Mr. Tilton, i should be aiding you in doing that which I cannot believe the strictest and firmest fricudship for you calls upon me to do.”” BEACBER TO MOULTON BXPRESSING REGRET AND ASTONISHMENT. On the same day Mr. Beecher wrote a second letter to Moulton, as follow: “Your letter bearing date August 4, 1ST4, is this moment re- ceived. Allow me to express my regret and as- tonishment that you refuse me permission even to see certain letters and papers tn your posees- sion relating to the charges made against me by Theodore Tilton, and at the reason given for the refusal. On your solemn and repeated assurances of friendship, and with the unques- tioning confidence you inspired bonor and fidelity, I placed in safe-keeping, various letters addressed to me from my brother, my sister, and various other parties; also, 8 memoranda of affairs not imme- diately connected with Mr. Tilton’s matters. I also from time to time addressed you confiden- tial notes relating to my own self as one friend would write to another. These papers were never placed in your hands to be held for two parties, nor to be used in any way. They were to be held for me. I did not wish them to be subject to the risk of loss or scattering from my careless habits in the matter of preserving documents. They were to be held for me. In so far as these were con- cerned you were only a friendly tras- tee, holding the papers subject to my wishes. Mr. Tilton has made a deadly assault upon me, and bas used letters and fragments of letters purporting tobe copies of thess papers. Are theee extracts genuine? What, if anything, has been left out, and what put in? You refuse my demand for these papers on various pleas That, if I speak the truth in my statement, I ao not need them; if I mal successful use of them it will be an inj Mr. Tilton, and that you, asa friend of both parties, are bound not to aid either in any act that shall injare the other. But I do not desire to injure any one, bat torepel an injury attempted upon me by the use of papers committed sacredly to your care. These documents have been seen and copied. They have been hawked for sale in the New York newspaper offices. What purport te be my confidential notes to you are on the market; but when 1 demand a sight of the originals of papers of which you are only a trustee, that 1 may defend myself, you refuse, because you are a friend to both parties. Mr. Tilton bas access to your depository for mate- rials with which to strike me, but I am not per. mitted to use them in defending myself. I do not ask you to place before the committee any pers Which Mr. Tilton may have given you, 4 I do demand that you forthwith place before the committee every paper which I nave written or deposited with you.”” MOULTON “ STICKS.” ‘This elicited the following reply from Mr. Moulton, dated August ‘th : “In all our acqaaintance and friendship I bave never received from you @ letter of the tone pak yr of August 4. [t ssems unlike your- self, to have been inspired by the same il!- advisers who had eo lamentably carried your private affairs before a committee of your urch and thence before the public. In reply, let me remind you that during the whole of the past eed age all the documents, notes and which you and Mr. Tilton have en- trusted to me have been so entraste| because they bad reference to your mutual differences. Thold no papers either of yours or his except such as bear on this case. You speak of memo- connected with the Tilton matter. You probably allude here to the memoranda of your difficulties with Mr. Bowen, but these have a direct reference to your present case with Tilton, and were depos- ited with me by you because of such reference. You speak also of « letter or two from your forgotten the apprehension we entertained lest Mrs. Hooker should falfill the design which she foreshadowed, to invade your pulpit and read to your congregation ® confesslon of your inti- macy with Mrs. Tilton. You speak of others which 1 hold subject to your wishes, I hold none such, nor do I hold any subject to Mr. Tilton’e wishes. The papers which I hold, both jours and bis, were not given to be subject to ihe wishes of either of the parties, but the very object of my holding them has been, and still is, to prevent the wish of one party from being tnjuriously exercised against the other.
