_EVENING STAR. ee Beading Matter on Every Page| —— SSS | WASHINGTON OITY: FRipaY. ---- August 7, 1874, ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer. or Bny portion of it, may have Tas Stax sent to Saaks othe Ser teats Gein de Shay Geta, an | ‘the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, sc- companied by the money, should be sent to the Dusiness office of the paper. ‘Where to Advertise. Tas Stan Bow a circulation very much that Strap has larger than that of all the other city papers combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outside. The result Tas Star affords unsurpassed advan- tages as a medium of communication between all classes of the community, in the way of the Mijustment of demand and supply. -s0e- ‘The new plan of the Washington Monument | Society for the completion of the memoris! shaft in this city tothe Father of his Country continues to meet with public favor. The press throughont the country, with few exceptions, is Bdvocating its completion, and liberal contin- gent subscriptions from society organizations, | banking companies, Sc., are received almost Gaily. There now seems no reasonable ground | to doubt that the present attempt to complete the monument will be successful. Mr. George | ‘Wiiliam Curtis interposes esthetic objections to the completion of the present shaft, which he says looks like an abandoned or abortive chim-% (x ney, and deflects an inch and a half from the perpendicuiar. Commenting on this opinion, the Public Record of Philadelphia does not | think that the artistic merits or demerits of the monument have really had much to do with its | failure hitherto to attract popular support, and that, comparing it with other public works of art, it is sufficiently good not to excite the hos- tile suspicions of the greater part of those who are accustomed to subscribe tor such purposes. Relative to the location of the monument, the Record says: “Bat it is evident that if this Washington | monument is to be built at ali, it can be erected | nowhere so appropriately a3 in the city of ‘Washington. [thas well been remarked that | the site where it now stands, ——— bopeless, is the very one selected By Washing- | ton himself as the appropriate spot for a monu- | ment to the American revolution, which was 0 in 1795. It is also the same site markcd on Major L’Enfant’s map of Washing- ton city tor the equestrian statue of General ‘Washington ordered by Congress in 1753, which mSp Was examined, approved and transmitted to Congress by Washington when President of the U: ited States.” The building and placing on the Potomac of the steamer Mary Washington is sn event of much more importance to Washington and the country below than it might seem to most per- fons on & mere announcement of the fact. In- tended to ply regularly between the city and the landings on the river as far down as a point below Mt. Vernon, it is the first and much needed step toward bringing into direct com- munication the consumer in town and the pro- ducer whore rich fields and orchards line the banks of the Potomac and its numerous estu- aries. It insures to the former fresher and cheaper fruits, vegetables avd milk than he bas yet been able to obtain from that produc- tive locality, and it secures for the latter s better and more certain market than he has heretofore been able to find for his products. In this respect alone the new enterprise can be made of inestimable advantage; but ita benefits need not stop here. Being sure of cheap, sare and convenient means of transportation, people living in the city will be induced to buy sites and Luild for summer use, if not for permanent | Occupancy, residences on the commanding hills | and beautiful slopes lying on both sides of the | river, thus adding to the comfort of oar city Population and value to the land in the neigh- Dorbood. Viewing the matter in this light, we trost that the projectors of the enterprise will meet with all the success they hope for, and | that the Mary Wa-hington is oaly the pioneer Of other prosperous ventures of the same char- | D acter yet to follow. It is pot in the dry-goods and clothing trades alone that colossal fortunes are made in New York and elsewhere through liberal advertising. ‘The same result follows the same policy in | nearly every other pursuit. Barnum pays the | Bewspapers £400,000 every year; Babbitt, the soap man, spends some years as high as 8: in advertising; Bonner, the newspaper pub- | lisher, practices his own precepts to the extent Ot about $200,000 annually; and a number of medicine men pay out as much or more every year. Many people look apon money paid out for advertising as spent and gone, but these shrewder business men view it in its proper Light. They regard it merely as an invesiment, from which large and regular returns are certain to be gained. And not for one year or two, alone, but as long as they continue in business. | Nor are they ever mistaken in this cal- culation. No investment a business man can make will pay as certainly and largely as the Money paid for advertising in @ newspaper of large and good circulation. It generally yields, when judiciously used, fromone hundred to one thousand per cent. This is the testimony of all who have fairly and thorongbly tested the prin- ciple. The sun is not more necessary to ripen- ing grain than publicity toa man who has —s thing he wants the pablic to buy. ‘The grangers show their hand « quite boldly in & political way out west, and although the na- tional grange fosters no political schemes, the subordinate granges do not hesitate to make their influence felt whenever they deem it ne- ceseary. It is stated that at the next meeting of the Wisconsin legislature an attempt will be made to repeal the law regulating railroads, which act was passed under the auspices of the grangers. In view of this the executive com- mittee of the state grange has issued an address to the grangers urging tuem to resist the effort and referring to the importance of persistent attention to the details incident and necessary to secure a legislatare the coming winter, which sball hereafter be known as having been im- | Pregnable to the assaalts of organized capital. In closing the committee recommend the prac- tice already inaugurated by the order, of re- quiring public men to answer questions publicly asto their opinions on the subject they are Ukely to be required to act upon. eay, is especially important upon the coming Occasion, but it should be adopted asa settied policy and practice of the order to make these Public tnquiries of public men at any and all times while they occupy public positions. — Kev. De Witt Talmage, is « wite-awake Preacher, and in his paper, Tie Christian at Work, of this week has @ stirring articie on Wide-awake preaching. ‘What we want,” says the reverend De Witt. “is more clear, ringing | Anglo-Saxon in the pulpit, and less artificiality Of language and voice, which make the preach. @t seem to be either an improved automaton or & vox humana stop taken out of the organ and set ‘Up in the pulpit. Thisdismal wailicg which we sometimes meet with, mixed up with weak mat- Sphor and redundancy Of speech, is often pat forth as the offspring of culture; but culture does not acknowledge the wayward child.” Th Feverend gentleman is right. More nature ant —— Sitting around fires at the watering places ‘g[nd mountain resorts at this season of the year is something city guests didn't bargain for, and Bence they are flocking home by hundreds to The re- sad blow ‘to the hopes ef the hotel keepers. Should the ! | | sutecriber, on’ er before the | Tais, they | Statistics embracing the record of mortality in New York for the five weeks preceding the the Ist of August every year since 1866, pre- pared by Dr. Harris, registrar of vital statistics, show the conditions euder which infant mor- tality is greatest. Th» record Jemonstrates the fact that when high temperature continued fur a few days it was always attended by an exces- sive mortality among children under two years of age, and whenever such temperature was | Conjoined with excessive moisture of the atmoz Phere the mortality reached its maximum. This Proves the wisdom of Dr. Harris’ advice that during the hot weather children should be taken | into the country away from the close, impure | air of the city. The very class, however, whose | children would be most benefited bya trip to the country are too poor te avail themselves of | it. They can nevertheless observe the sanitary precautions so necessary to the preservation of bealth, and by using proper food and the exer- cise of cleanliness do much towards saving the | lives of these little ones. —____-.+ee-____ | ‘Tux We2k.y Sra, now ready, contains all the news of the week, local and ge | about the Beecher scandal; the burning of the | steamer Pat.
