EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8, NOTES Largest Cireulation i in the District | S:'; fret. _ mercantile paper. Gold cor Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: jetober 7, 1878. TUES! Some very crade notions about conducting & newspaper were put forth at a meeting of the pastors of the Methodist Episcopal rehes in Baltimore yesterday, held for the purpose of considering the feasibility of establishing a re- ligious journal in Baltimore. One eler; said the success of the paper would be assured if it could once get two thousand subscribers, And one said he would propose to get @ job | money. 92% printer and make the job office pay the expenses of the paper. would pay for all the telegraphic dispatches that could be needed, and they could all write | fr aiscomnt ‘tn open editorials and send items to the paper, so that it would not need either editors or local reporters! Each clergyman who learned of an item, could write it out and drop it in the post office box or give it to a carrier, and it would be in time for the paper next day.” The same clerical genius asserted that two columns of advertisements would support a paper, and that the rest would be clear profit. One brother said he had written three or four pages of matter a week for three or four months for a Methodist journal, and had received but $11 (or about 25 cents per page) for the whole work. It is quite evident that these clerical gentlemen know more about preaching | east of Georgia than they do about running a newspaper. The problem distracting the colored voters of the state of New York is whether it is, or is not, better for their interests to disband the colored republican organizations throughout the state | Wii ‘and join existing organizations of white repub- licans. To solve this question the colored re- publican state convention which adjoarned at Saratoga last August will meet again in New York city to-day. cated by Wm. Johnson, a leading coloted re- publican of the state, residing in Albany, and hho is seconded by ® number of colored men who believe that such action would be politic and result to the best interests of both the colored republicans and the entire party. On the other ter hand there ares large number of colored men sianaie cou who oppose the movement to disband their or- mm i ganizations, and hold an opinion that their po- = ‘Havens Nee, porte. litical weight in the party would be thas greatly lessened. There are also s number of disap- pointed office-seekers who are endeavoring to make their personal grievances an element of discord among eolored republicans, and to ore- ate a division in favor of the democracy. — The telegram from ‘Memphis y we ve publish to- day paints s picture of suffering in that plague- | °F stricken city terrible in tts details. Eight han- dred deaths from the yellow fever scourge in a few weeks, with an alarming increase in the number of cases and'deaths yesterday; bodies ying unburied and infecting the atmosphere; all who can ficeing from the pestilence; busi- ess prostrated and houses closed, are a few of the facts telegraphed; but these can convey no idea of the thousands of cases of individual suffering and destitution which must exist at such a time, and which appeal to all charitable souls for relief now, while money can avail to lessen the horrors of the plague. ‘The financial situation in Washington con- tinues to improve, and the associated banks are | paying out currency freely for legitimate busi- | ness~ veeds. In no bank ia the asso- ciation is the proportion of certified checks issued daily more than half the amount paid out in currency. The proportion f currency paid out is likely to increase from ay today, and the amount of certified checks © diminish in the same proportion. Altogether the financial outlook is most hopeful and satis- factory. eae Cold weather is believed to be favorable to nd of the approach of winter, it would be good ides for those who have not been vacci- nated to have the matter attended to at once. “A stitch in time save nine,” according to poor Richard, and a little precaution may save much suffering and even death itself. —.22—__ A correspondent makes the suggestion that a great relief would be afforded to employers and employes in these tight times if our citizens, generally, would strain a point and settle up Promptly with mechanics. As suggested, the failure to do so in many cases is not inability, Or indisposition, but mere thoughtlessness. peel ‘The balloon whieh started from New Yerk for | *#te, Europe yesterday took ‘® northeasterly course and landed | Canaan—Conneeticut.
