Forrgitun® oF Pay ny DEserTeRs.—The War department has issued an order to the eflect that hereafter every deserter shall forfe all pay and allowances due at the time of de- xertion. The authorized stoppages and fines due at the time of desertion shall be deducted trom the arrears of pay. If the stoppages and fines are greater than the arrears of pay, the balance will be deducted from pay due after ap- prehension. IT HAS HERETOFORE REEN ANNOUNCED that Lieutenant Godfrey Hunter, U.S. navy, son of the Hon. Wm. Hunter, of the Department of State, died on board the U. S. flagship Wabash, on September 26, 1573, at jona, Spain: Lieutenant Hunter entered the Naval Acade- my while it was at Newport, K. I, in Septem- ber, 1861, at the age of 14 ‘years.’ He entered upon active service as an officer of the navy at the age of eighteen years, and won_ the esteem of his superiors by his gentlemanly bearing and his proficiency as an officer. Tus Transit or Venus.—Prof. Newcomb, of the naval observatory, who was sent to En- rope to coneult with astronomers of the various nations preparing expeditions to observe the transit or Venus, has returned. The meeting took place at Hanover. So far as astronomical measurements are concerned there can be litt! difference in the plans adopted. ‘The main dif- ference is in the methods ef photographing the sun. The French will use the American method invented by Prof. Winiock, director of the Har- yard observatory. Lord Linvsay, @ Scotch no- bieman, who 1s fitting out a private expedition, has also adopted this method. So far as now known there will be forty-one stations occupied with parties of observers, furnished with the best equipments which modern sci#nce can sup- ply. Of these stations the United States will sceupy eight, England afl France six each, Germany five, Russia fifteen, mostly in Siberia, and Lord Lindsay one, the latter on an island off the east coast of Madagascar. Pursonat.—Gen. N. P. Chipman, and Judges Miller and Strong, of the Supreme Oourt of the United States, arrived in New York this morn- ing from Liverpool, by the steamer City of Brossels. Bupprnctor’s Lirs CLosap.—The Inmann steamship City of Antwerp, which arrived at New York on Saturday, bringing Captain Buddington and the remaining sur- vivors of tne Polaris, was intercepted on her way up the bay by a’steamer from the navy yard, and Captain Buddington and his men were taken to the yard, where the reporters of the evening papers tried to interview them, but were not successful. One account says :— Captam Buddington is a weather-beaten man, about 40 years old, of medium stature and a cheerful, pleasant countenance. When accosted by the reporter he looked up atid said :—* It’s too bad, sir; but I’m under martial law and cannot speak to any one; I know you to be a reporter, and I would like to give you all the information in my power, but [ am watched and cannot speak.” The officer in charge of the deck said that no one was allowed to con- verse with the Polaris party, orders to that effect having been received from the Secretary of the Navy several days ago. The party are confined to the Tallapoosa, which starts for Washington to-day, (Saturday.)
