The increase of the payment of currency by the associated banks is po Arend by jay’s clearances, which footed up only $6,519.90. THE NATIONAL METROPOLITAN BANK. The correspondents of one or two papers have seen fit to telegraph false statements, calculated to injure the credit and reputation of the staunch old Metropolitan Bark. To relieve all anxiety of the public directly interested, it is gratifying to state that a bank examiner, and one of the most competent of the corps, at the urgent solicitation of the bank officials was invited to investigate the affairs of the bank. The result was submitted to tho Controller of the Currency gon Mr. Langworthy, Acting Controller of the Currency, in the absence of Mr. Knox, assured & Stag reporter that the exhibit was a most gratifying and convincing one of the stability ofthe bank. It is understood that preparations are nearly completed for the organization of a new bank here to take the business which the First N; tional bank and Jay Cooke’s house have here’ fore done. The design is to secure the circu- lating notes of the First National. There wit! be a strong demand for another bank when the ordinary course of business is resumed. JAY COOKE AND CO. What Another Creditor Says. Editor Star: Itis difficult to understand in whose interests an article was written which appeared in a of yesterday, signed Cr iniy not in the interest of “Creditor.” Jay Cooke & Co., for they prefer a voluntary and bonorable settlement with their creditors, paying dollar for dollar. Nor in the interest of the creditor, for Jay Cooke & Co. offer terms which could not be exacted by iat They give bg all their property, including also the dower of their wives. ‘The jaw claims only the amoun’ invested by each er in the business of the firm, and gives full release upon Pesan of fifty per cent. of the liabilities. ANOTHER CREDITOR. The Crew of the Polaris, THE TALI@POOSA WITH BUDDINGTON AND PARTY NOT HERE YET. Up to two o’clock this afternoon no intelli- gence had been received from the navy yard at the Navy department announcing the arrival there of the Tallapoosa. In view of the severe weather during the past thirty-six hours, Com- modore Reynolds, acting Secretary of the Navy, ‘says it is possible that the vessel put in at the Delaware breakwater, awaiting a smoother sea. It is possible that the Secretary of the Navy gave orders in New York to have the ves- sel proceed first to Philadelphia and discharge freight which she had aboard for that naval station. No definite statement can be made a+ to how the investigation will be conducted unti the arrival of Secretary Robeson, who is ex id to-night or on the early morning train 't is probable, however, as stated in yesterday’ Stan, that the same officials who conducted the examination of the Tyson party will hear the statements of the survivors, and repori thereon, they being familiar with the testimony elicited heretofore. The new party is constantly re- ceiving ‘accessions. Nevertheless the chances favor the monarchists, who have a majority in the Assembly, the entire army, and sbundance with which to bribe weak and ambitious politi- cians. That Thiers should have consented at last toan alliance with the Imperialists is re= garded as an evidence of the rapid strides which the monarchical cause is making, and the ur- gent necessity for immediate measures to serve the now tottering republic. M. Rouher has been promised a baronetcy immediately after the restoration, which may now be consid~ ered certain soon after the Assembly convenes."? DARWINIEM IS THE NGRELICAL Conper- zNcE.—After our report of the proceedings of the Evangelical alliance closed yesterday, a! address was made in faith and reason by ite: Dr. Washburn, of New York. Atthe afternoon session papers were read on ‘Christianity Humanity,” theology ‘and philosophy. interrogatory submiited Mr. Dawson “Is @ necessary antagonism between the Darwinism theory and the Christian church” he replied that it was rather @ hard question, and that it would take a well prepared treatise to respond satis- factorily, However, he would do his best. He said that in science we do not hold that we ean do anything without matter and force. Scien- tists hold to creation, and the Spencerian phil- =a crs hold that they can produce livit from dead matter. This they have not, however, as yet fully ed. The Darwinian system is as follows: That all forms of vegeta~ ble and animal matter are the result of unde- ns force. Darwin reasons as to the bility of the development of species, but does not produce any scientific facts. There may be 8 modified variety of truth in the Darwinian system as to the Various varieties of races; but ‘at Man was produced from an ape does not at all accord scriptural revelation.
