It is a remarkable fact that adroit criminals, afier adopting many ingenious devices to elude detection, fail to observe some of the simplest precautionary rales, and fall under the ban of suspicion on account of such neglect. The al- 1 forger, Horton, who has just been taken to Lancaster, was remarkably ‘successful for ® comperatively long period in cluding pursuit, and it is said that he had #9 thoroughly aiagais— ed himself that he might have traveled any- where with safety if he had not continued to wear upon his little finger a cameo ring. Ths story, as told by one of the New York journals, is as follows: ‘Horton had been carefully de- seribed in circulars and advertisemen.s as Lhd about forty years old, five fect and seven to eight inches high; erect, broad-shouldered, and corpuient; | sallow-complexioned, Diack-¢yed ard with short biack hair, side ‘whiskers and mustache. Walking into a dry goods store im Providence on Thursday, to make some pur- chas:~, he, while talking with the clerk, rested his hand upon the couuter. The clerk noticed the ring, and having received oneo! the printed descriptions, he examined it covertly but crit- ically. It was a moderately heavy ring, aud the cameo, upon which the head of a woman was carved, was set in an oval black ground. The clerk found that it corresponded in et ‘way to the ring described in the circular, anxious to obtain the reward offered, (#1,000,) he kept bis customer in sight until he had the local police informed, when the culprit was am occasionally heard of who col- lars a burglar or points a pistol at bis nose, Mrs. Mary Lee, of Si Onk street, recently proved herself a heroine of ultra meuld.
