A correspondent of the Boston Post has been looking up t branch of the neda Comma nity which is located at Wallingford, Connecti - cut. No one could possibly read his description of their little settlement without feeling that so far as social happiness gocs, they have reached nearly to perfection. A colony of pleasant cot- tages, surrounded with magnificent orchards and flower beds, while the materia! indastries of the people were conducted in a perfectly ap= pointed silk factory, testified to the thrift and Foaustry of the commauity. The social princt - plesot these people, however, are apt to disen- chant the nary Christian, who has looked with an admiring eye upon thelr results. This correspondent interviewed one of the sages of the community, and so far as we can j from his cloudy —_ of the comm doctrine, we should say that its practice is not very much more immoral than the Mormon ne Oncide religions and physical ‘that of the Oneida re! Y law is the common interest of all in lands and proper ty extends to women. If John Smith weds Sarah Jones, she is no more his wife than that of any other member of the community who takes ® fancy to her. We extract a few sen- tences which seem to embody the pith of the — doctrine, as set forth by one of the chief apostles Mr Our doctrine is that the whole matter of love and its expression should be subject to enlight- ened self-control. We regard it better in the early stage of passional experience for the young of both sexes to associate in love with Persons older than themselves, and if possible with those who are spiritual and have been some time in the sclool of self control, and who are thus able to make love safe and edifying. It is well understood by physiologists that undesirable for persons of similar characters and temperaments to mate together. We have discovered that it is undesirable for two in- experienced and unspiritual persons to rush into fellowship with each other; that it is tar better for both to associate with persens of mature character and sound sense. If you take an interest in this matter, sir, | can explain further by saying that another’ general princi- ple with us ts that it isnot desirable for twe persons, whatever may be their standing, to become exclusively attached to each other, bowever popular this may be with sentimental people generally. Another principle with us's that persons shall not be obliged to receive, under any circumstances, the attention of those whom they do not like. The great aim isto teach every one self-control, and this leads to the greatest happiness in love and the greatest good to all.” It is remarkable that there should be any body of Americans, however smail, who can thus make a practical demal of the Christian be'lef in the Sanctity of marriage. Yet these people do it, and husbands take an infinitesimal share in their wives without any apparent susceptibility to that feeling which prompts ordinary men to murder the violatorsof matri- monial sanctity.—Haltimore American.
