Collector Pinkney Rollens, of the 7th district of North Carolina, informs the Revenue Bureau that Special Deputy R. H. Patterson and the soldiers, under Lieut. Mast, destroyed the illicit distilleries in Haywood county, and made twelve in McDowell county. They then proceeded to South Mountain, in Burke county, where they destroyed eight distilleries and made seventeen arrests. T! @se eight distilleries were located in close proximity to each other, and there was reliable information of baytarg, Bord twenty-five more being in operation in the South Mountain, but further progress was arrested by the inter- ference of state authorities; Lieut. Mast and Deputy Marshal Deaver being arrested upon a Pench warrant from Judge Clark for de- atroying property. The collector says:—I do not wish to reflect upon the judge's integrity, but believe that he was imposed upon by cer- tain parties who, besides being generally hostile to anything looking to the execution of the laws of the federal government, made this more to give the law breakers time to remove their stills and get out of the way. There was no unneces- sary or wanton destruction of property; and all law-abiding citizens will bear testimony that the conduct of Lieutenant Mast and his men has been unexceptionable throughout. This matter should not be suffered to rest at this st » but should be persued to the end, and regardless of expense, else the lawless and evil-dis; per- sons will look upon it as a check to federal au- thority and e encouragement to continue their lawless acts. I inte: hed mene agin go dition next week to the samé locality, to make auother effort for the enforcement of the law, in which I hope to be supported to any ex- tent by the strong arm of the government. Supervisor Perry in transmitting the re} to the commissioner says: ‘No pains be spared to break up all illicit stills in said dis- trict which can bly bereached. The reve- nue officers which accompanied the expedition were particularly cautioned doing any- thing which in any way could made ap- pear as wrong or oppressive, and I have thus obeyed the instructions literally. Noone anac- uainted with the same can form any idea of the bitter malicious hostility of the peeple in those neighborhoods to revenue and other offi- cers who assist im besesaia yd the revenue law, and they are encouraged in their hostile and malicious acts by most of the conservative newspapers in the state.” Domestic Tragedies in New York. Last night, in New York city, Max Hensen, while intoxicated, shot his wife in the right breast, and then shot himself in the mouth. Both are fatally wounded. More New York “ Rrixo” InpicTMENTs.— The grand jury of the oyer and terminer have been engaged for several days past considering certain facts in connection with the transac: tions of the board of supervisors who held office during the years 1807-8. It is rumored that ex- Congressman John Fox and Assemblyman “Denny” Burns will be indicted during the present session. It is further asserted that all the other members who composed the board of supervisors at the time named will, in all prob- ability, be also indicted. ‘The ‘indictments against Messrs. Fox and Burns, it is said, will comprise charges of having appropriated or otherwise obtained between $200 and $300,000 of the city funds, which they applied, it is alleged, to their own use. It is stated that Mr. Fox has for some time past been disposing of his Teal estate, in order to be prepared for any such action on the part of the grand jury as that now proposed. This he was induced to do, it is said, on account of @ private announcement having been made to him that some action would prob- ably be taken during the present grand jury term. Mr. Fox’s property is now supposed to consist entirely, or almost so, of stocks and ba of ~ leading railroads and bamks.—V. + Times, 4th. Waces tn Paris.—From an official inquiry set on foot by the Chamber of Commerce of Paris, it cd moped that there are hog rg in the various trades and manufactories 11 hands, of whom about 300,000 are men, 120,000 women, and 47,000 children. Of these there are 60,000 males earning from 50 centimes (10 cents) to 3 france (60 cents) per day; 211,000 earn from 3 to 6 francs (65 cents $1.20) per day, ai 15,000 from 6% to 20 francs (1.3) to 64.) Of the females, 17,200 earn from 50 centimes (10 cents) to 1 frane 25 centimes to 4 francs (25 to 80 cents;) and 700 from 4 to 10 francs (90 cents to 2.) It is asserted that all the letter- carriers will be assessed. A telegram from St. Louis says: ‘Mr. Filley has made no public statement rogarding the matter, but it is stated he justifies himself on the nd that assess- ments are customary, and t he has recently incurred a heavy nal expense in increas. ing the facilities of the office and of this section of the country, which has required visits to Washington and other places, the cost of which he cannot afford to pay himself.”” A sa pnd bie heart Doha a TO — crpz.—A young lawyer of Chicago, d/sappoin ed in love, demanded poison from a arugelst, but was considerately given several delicate little powders of pre; chalk instead. He then went to the residence of the adored one, who was sojourning at Valparaiso, Ind. He again offered his hand, which she unconditionally re- fused, whereupen he cried: «At your door ie i, death,” and swallowed the powders.
