In either case it is stealing of the meanest de- scription, and ison the same principle as that upon which some of the old Dutch settlers of New York, according to Knickerbocker, acted in their dealings with the red men. In selling any article t> the Indians it was customary for the Dutchman to place the article in one scale and his hand lightly on the other. When the scale containing the article went down, the In- dian was told he had a pound, In buying furs from the red man the Dutchman varied the process slightly. Instead of his hand he placed his foot, upon which rested almost the entire weight of his body, (averaging say three hun- dred pounds,) and telling the Indian his foot represented s pound, called upon him to pile up his goods on the other scale until an equi- poise was obtained.
