EVENING STAR. Te War Deraat™ Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Pages WASHINGTON OITY: ‘ovember 22, 1870. Gex. Bovree axD THt McGaRRanan Crar.—Gen. Butler is out in a letter, in whieh he recites his personal knowledge of the con- tested land claims between McGarrahan and the . New Idiia Mining Company, which have been mixed up in the resignation of Secretary Cox. He is a member of the Commuttee of the House | of Representatives which examined the case, beard the arguments of couns+I and the testi- | mons of witnesses, and be gives it as his opinion that neither McGarrahan nor the Company has any just title to the lands in question, but that of right they belong to the United States. It cannot be denied by the sincerest friend of Mr- Cox that he showed almost undue anciety to give away this five millions worth of prop- erty to m private corporation at the gov- ernment valuation of one dollar and a quarter per acre, giving it away, too, to the prejudice of all claim of the United States. President Grant interfered, and his interfer~ ence had this result: it possibly saved the peo- ple five millions of dollars. it was not an in- terference to save Mr. Mc(arrahan; it was an interterence to protect the rights of the people of the whole country. As General Butler says, ‘nearly a quarter of a miilion of the people's money had been expended in contesting this claim, and counsel as eminent as the late Edwin M Stanton had been engaged in the case. Mr- Cox, by a single stroke of bis pen, by the issu- ing of his patent proposed to sweep these two bundred and fifty thousand dollars into the treasury of the New Idria Mining Company, and at the same time make them a present of a tract of land worth five millions of dollars. - a It seems that the illness of President JSustez, Of Mexico, was a paralysis of the nerve which controls the beating of the heart. He is now recovering from the attack. During the time that fears were entertained that he would die, the congress sat in permanent session, in order to act quickly regarding the naming of a suc- cessor to Juarez in case of his death, but fortu- nately there did pot arise a necessity for such a measure. — By the way this reminds us that Mexico bae'nt bad a revolution for months. We hope there is nothing wrong there. but this sluggisb- ness is certainly unaccountable. The world will forget that there is a Mexico if she goes on in this matter of fact, humdrumstyle. Of course if eae really means it, and has settled down, after sowing her wild oats, toa steady, peacetal, domestic sort of life we shall all be glad; bat we want to be assured that it isu’t mere apathy— dont-care-itiveness on ber part. +20e- A LAMESTABLE LAMENTATION from Kome with the “compliments of the pub- lisher, Signior Joseph V we have a political Lamentation on Republican France, dedicated to Napoleon III. by Edward St. Jobn-Brennen. And a lamentable affair it is. The opening lines are as good or bad as any, and they are thus: An emperor smitten, not slain, Smitten sore by the treason of knaves, Thou shalt rise, 0 Napoleon, to crush Neath thy heel those abortions of slaves, ‘Neath thy heel shalt thou crush them t> death, Those who have poisoned with pestilent breath The oes oo hast done for thy beautiful In thedays . vot thy might and magnificence. It is certainly rough on the ex-Emperor that his mistortunes make him the target tor such *ympathetic “lines” as these. General Butler endorses the President for ing im abeyance the title to the lands claimed by McGarrahan, and thinks he is en- titled therefor te the thanks of all honest and judicious men. With the fuller light that bay recently been shed upon this subject, the people will think so too. The disposition of these “land-grabbers” to take ‘snap judgment” at the expense of pablic rights might as well be stopped at once. What they chictly regret is that they can’t dig up a territory or two, clap them into a wheelbarrow, and make oft with them to parts unknown. Let us give thanks that wheeibarrows of the necessary dimensions Go not exist —¥. F. Commercial. 3 Not |So.—The statement that Marshall 0. Koberts and General Fremont have taken ex- tensive and permanent quarters here, for the purpose of looking after the interests of the Southern Pacific Railroad, is contradicted,—at least the first part of it. Nevertheless things Will probably be “looked afte Goon. _The school appropriation bill passed both boards of the City Councils last night, and the teachers, now some months bebind in their salaries. will be paid. Taz Star takes some credit to itself for putting the ball—or bill, in motion. - — = The Aldermen last night confirmed afew more of the Mayor's appeintments that have been hanging on the hooks of the “‘octette.” Why bot eud this purposeless squabble by contirming the whole list “ ~+see- BALTIMORE AND OHIO KalLeoaD—Election f ‘ori ry oa annual meeting more yee of the stockholders of the Bal more and Obio Railroad Company Mesera.
