The reports are so conflicting in regard | to the strength of position of either side, that it | is difficult to determine the point at this dis- tance trom the field. The master masons allege that nearly all the building in the city has Deen stopped, and that the men are almost ‘Without work. The bricklayers assert, on the other hand, that with few exceptions they are all employed, and are making new contracts every day on their own account, for new jobs | ' 3&5 well as to complete those abandoned by the Dosses. The bosses complain that the strikers send committees to mfluence men engaged at ten hours to stop work, and threaten to prosecute the strikers for this course under the laws of the State of New York against conspiracies. ‘The strikers have, however, taken legal advice, | and hold that the courts will maintain them im | influencing workmen to stop work by any means short of coercion From the coal regions im Luzerene and Le- | high counties, it is reported that the strike is at | anend. A dispatch from Wilkesbarre says. at nearly all the colleries recently stopped in this section work was resumed on July 25th, and in the rest the miners will go to work to-inorrow. | Au effort was made to get up another meeting of strikers, but the movement failed. At | Hazleton, in the Lehigh region, all the col- | lieries are in operation except the Stockton | works, and on July 29 the operatives will go | to work there. In Schuylkill county the miners are stil! lying idle, but from present indications will probably go to work ina few dsys. Un the Lehigh Valley Railroad, the sys- tem of paying the men by the hour works ad- mirably. Themen work justas long as they aid before, and get precisely the same pay, ‘The procismations of the Sheriffs ot the differ- ent counties are sid to have influenced the mem to desist from their vigorous measures to | compel a general compliauce with the eight- hour law. Tue FRawKtix Scuoot Buitprxc.—There is quitea little breeze of excitement amongst the public school tolks in the First District, over a report that the Government is desirous of getting possession ot the Franklin School Building for the use of the (uartermaster's Department. This magnificent structure, now 3m course of erection at the corner of 13th and K streets, is concedediy one of the finest build- ings for school purposes in the country: and the friends of public schools in that district, ‘who have looked forward with much pride and solicitude to its early ocoupancy, naturally jook with much disfavor upon any project ai- ‘verting it from tha: use. Those favoring the sale, urge that the money realized upon it would build several smaller schol houses | scattered through the school district for the better convenience of the school population: and that the Franklin Building cannot be fin- ashed for schoo! purposes, 1m the present cor. dition of the Corporation cos, tor year | or two. Gov. Baker, Lieut Gov. Cumback, Hon. Thomas H. Nelson, and others, have already canvassed more than twenty counties. Carl Schurz will commence stumping Indiana on the 31sg instant. Tne canvass for the successorship to Mr. Hendricks, in the United States Senate, is likely to be lively. The candidates named thus far are | Hon. Godlove S. Orth, of Lafayette; Hon. Will Cumback, formerly in Congress, and now on ‘the State ticket tor Lieutenant Governor; Hon. George W. Julian, of the “Burnt District,” and Judge Hughes, who is now practising law in this city.
