Many, Without doubt, like Usin, are tugitives and vagabonds on the earth becanse of their in- Iguity, but it is hard to distinguish between them snd the unfortapaste, especially when they appeal to our humanity. Washingten bas bad to take care of paupers sent bere from otber cities. Our citizens have compiained and protested against it without avail, until they have had to adopt measures for self-pro- tection. The deserving poor haye never been turned Away, and even the worthless yaga- bonds sre made comfortable, at least tor a bight, and admonished to depart speedily for chmes where they can live without work, or prepare for 8 term of service at the city farm to pay the cost of their maiutainance during the winter. Some of our stations are so pop- wlar as lodging places that vagrants apply in advance for soft planks to sleep on at night, but cenerally they are notified that two or three nights (hey can sleep ata station, and then they must be transferred to the workhouse.
