A motion to table it was lost—67 to 27. The resolution ‘was then adopted and committee appointed. The proposition before the Kansas Legisla- ‘vee to &ppropriate $100,000 to continue the work ou the Capitol bi i deteated, from the ready built are crumbling to pieces. Petitions from Ail parts of the State asking that the word “while” be stricken out of the constitution are being presenied. A joint resolution to the effect will undoubtedly pass. Yesterday several forged checks of $1,000» were offered at different banks in Philadelphia and the signatures being well executed, were piid withont suspicion. One on J.D. Boyd sof $1,950, and another on J. Flanner for $995 ‘were paid. Similar efforts were made simul- taneously to victimize nearly every bank in the city. Lieutenant Armes, with thirty soldiers from For. A unanimous Vote rejecting 1t was the response. A telegram from Idaho says that General Crook has returned to Fort Lyon with one hundred prisoners and thirty-six horses that he had captured. A great many Indians were killed, though the number is not stated. A big fight is expected soon. Admiral Tegethoff, the hero of the great naval battle of Lissa, visited the United Staves navy-yard in Pniladelphia yesterday, aud was received with full honors. He afterward visited the fleet of monitors at League Island. The committee appointed by the Chamber of Commerce, of Memphis, Tennessee, to test che constitutionality of the cotton tax reporte against testing it, owing to the apathy of mer- chante and planters. Both Houses of the Alabama Legislature are earnestly engaged in discussing the coustitu- tional amendment. A test vote which has been taken indicates that Mobile will soon be te capital of Alabama. About eleven o'clock last night the police of the 15th precinct, under orders of Capt. Caf- trey, and commanded by Sergeant Schoon- maker, made 4 descent on the well known and fashionable gambling house No. 762 Broad- way, kept by the celebrated pugilist, Johu C. Heenan. It seems that the police have been keeping rather a close watch of these places of late, and last night Sergeant Schoonmaker, be- coming convinced that there was a large game going on at the above place, concluded to make araid on the gang. Taking with him a good pesse Of men, he stationed them near by, and then, uuaccompanied, entered the place in dis- guise. Here be found over fifty noted gam- blers, sports and others engaged in a game, en- joying themselves to the fullest extent, and little anticipating what was in store for them. The Sergeant, after enjoying a view of the game for a short time, made himself known to the party, whoin utter astonishment jumped from their seats, and the b ageway excitement ensued. They all made the door with a view of escaping; but they were too late, as they were met by a | reba who forced them back into the room. There was no less than trom $10,000 to $15,000 on the table, which the cashier seized and put in his pocket. The gambling implements, consisting of two tables, 360 checks, a dealing box, layout board, &c., were all taken possession of and conveyed to the 15th precinct station house. The prisoners ‘Were all permitted to go at large, except Hee- nan, Louis Baker, (the alleged murderer of Hill Poole,) Wm. and the colored servants, Charles Willis and Wm. Jobnson. Rec Thee presio m 1s Nzw SEWERAGE or Lonpow.—The latest sta- tistics of the new main-drainage works in London are eurious. The total length of new sewers at present contemplated is eighty-two miles, and the works, when finished, will have cost £4,200,000. The drainage intercepted and carried off by thsse sewers is derived from an area of about one hundred and seventeen square miles, and & population of 2,809,000. The amount of sewerage carried off on the north side of the Thamesamounts to 10,000,000, and or the south to 4,000,000 cnbic feet. In the construction of the works 318,000,000 bricks and $50,000 cubic yards of concrete have been used, and about 3,500,000 cubi ds of earth exca- vated. The Lancet say: This grandsystem of sewerage has been constructed under build- ings, and over and under canals, rivers and road ways, from twenty-five feet above to sev- enty-five feet below the surface, without any important casualty or interference with the public convenience or traffic. The construe- tural arrangements of the metropolis would appear tobe more wonderful and successful below the surface than above.” Tue TARI¥F.—The following facts in the le- gislauon of Congress upon the tariff, will show how Congress differs: «Copper, which comes am at present at five per cent. valorem, ak a Qt twenty per cent. in the Honse bill and fixed at ten per cent. by the Commissioner.and has been finally putin the Senate at three cents per pound, which is equal to thirty per cent. ad valorem.
