Tue Natiova. Equat Ricats Leacve *ConvxsTION OF COLORED Men —A meeting -of this convention was held yesterday morn- ing at the Union League Rooms, aud was called to order by J.M. Langston, of Obio. Devotional exercises were conducted by Rev. Elisha Weaver, of Philadelphia. After or- ganizing, the convention resolved into a com- “mittee of the whole, and an address was de- livered by CO. H. Langston, of Kansas. A com- mittee on business, consisting of nine mem- bers, was appointed. The joltewieg vice pres- Idents were elected —Bishop A. Wayman, of Md; W. D. Mathews, ot Kansas: W Nesbit, of Pa; Rev. K J. Robinson, of Ohio. A finance committee was appointed, and Dr. S. J. brown, et Md.,and K B. Johns, of N.J., with the president, were appointed to draft an address to Congress. After seme other busi- bess, the convention adjourned until evening. The reso- Jutiens deciure that the Government has no more “ight to deprive a man of his vote than of trial by jury; that all laws which make a discrimination on accoant of race or color are unconstitutional and void: deciaring that the colored race have the right to the ballot because they are citizens, tax-payers, and patrio:s, and itis a natural and ipherent right; claim a fair and impartial trial by jury for their race; de- clare that the citizens of one State are entitiea to all the privileges and immunities of citizens ip several States, and they ask the establish- ment of a national standard of qualifications, whicb shall be uniform and universal, &c., &c. Snicket, of Norfolk, white, said he Wwisbed to cali the attention of the convention to the outrages on freedmen in Virginia by courts whick were ali illegal in that State, and expecially to the case of W. J. Hodges. ‘Tbe Chair remarked that the proper course for the g eman to pursue was to lay the subject before the business committee The Chair said it was proposed to hold one of the greatest meetings here ever held in this city. There were several gentlemen who were very radicul and earnest. He alluded to the once Governor of Texas, Hon. A. J. Hamilton, (applause: Hon. George Julian, of Ind.: Qol. Moss, of ; Col. W. J. Stokes, of Tenn., and Col. RK. J Hinton, of Kansas, who would be present. The names ot Hon. Chas. Sumner, of Mass., and Judge Kelly, of Pa., was suggested A committee was appein.ed to wait on the geutlemen named and invite them to the meet- ing to-night. The Chair suggested thatas there was no distinction on account of color. it might be well to elect some of their white friends to Bonorary membership.
