Swift, with Vera Cruz passengers, pot in here for coal, bound for New Orleans. An intelligent gentleman states that the entire French army is moving toward Vera Oruz, the rear guard being at Queretaro. Marshal Bazaine bas issued orders that the last French steamer should leave by the 34 of Maron. Positive advices from Sam Luis Potosi, De- cember 15, left the French commander there with a well-appointed force. The Liberal army under Turno was about 5,00 strong, bat scattered and levying enormous contributions on Haciendos. ejia said be would wait un- til the rear of the French train and treasure had passed, when he would attack and drive back the Liberals. Maximilian keeps very close at Puebla. The French expedition is bound to Tampico to clean ont the place before embarking. The French soldiers num- ber 15,000, but at present there are only two transports and three frigates, including the Austrian vessels, at Vera Cruz. The impe- rial Mexican fo; adhering to Maximilian will number . all armed from the Fregch arsenals. The Emperor Maximi has not the slightest intention of abdicating. Du- paine, the commander, is charged with approv- ing theabuse of individuals by the French. The commander-in-chief of the French army lately imprisoned Charles Morehead, of the firm of Davis & Co., at San Luis Potosi, in a loathsome dangeon, and ordered a poor con- federate teamster named Polk, from Texas, to the punisbment of three hundred jashes for protecting himself from being run over by a French officer by taking his horse by the bri- die. The guerriijas threw a railroad train frdm the track on Thursday, the $d of January, not far from Vera Croz, sacking the train and cat- ting up the French soldiers on board. AMERICAN FINANCE.—That a government which one year ago had no internai revenue a: all, Whose tax gatherer never came tothe home, or intervened in the dealings of the people, should be able to raise £60.000,00) or any such sum isa miracle. In any other country the bare attempt would have caused a revolution But in America these taxes are borne as pa- uently as taxes are ever borne in any country. There is no more idea of resisting them than of declaring a monarchy. No endeavor has been made to sweeten the impost by Bicety of adjustment or by delicate selection. Congress simply laid a tax upon everything u couid think of and jet it hit whom it could. Yet this financial decimation of the people excites litte murmuring. The Americans are little apt to imagine that the facts of their government can betyrannical. They are the actsef the per- sons for whom they yoted, of their agents, and there is nosemblance of the bitter feeling which prevails in most countries at taxes imposed by & superior authority feltor fancied to be other toan the people. The Americans, too, have the mouey; everybody is weil off, and everybody seemingly wishes that the government should be well off also. —London Economist.
