Som: thing may be done with artrficial manures to be sure, Dut they are to be considered rather as stimalsats to the immediate crops, than as Means of keeping up the ha rl fertility and conditien of theland. © believe in stock- ing a farm pretty nearly up to its utmost ca- y. We do not mean by this to recommend a farmer to keep more than his farm will carry well, but to keep as much, andif he hastosap- plement 4 little, thatis, tobev more orless in or hay to belp out a rather short CEP he ad better do this than to sell his bay for it of stock enough tocensume it. In other words, itis better to sell the produce of the farm oa four legs, than to sell it in the formof hay and gTain, unless he bas some other and extraord- inary means ot supplying a fall nivalent in the form of fertilizers, that will keep up the condition of the land. We haveseem hay *eld in the barn in the country. within &@ week. at thirty-threedollars & ten, and that, too, more than forty miles from Boston. Of course the temptation is very strong “to let slide” at such a'price, rather than to feed it out to un ordinary stock of cattle. No one would pretend to say itis worth that mon- ey to feed to common stock. Cattle ought to be ofa high and first rate quality to justify an ex- pectation that it will paythat to feedout. And yet itis probable that it will go higher instead of lower in the course ofthe winter. Bat we must look abead a little and see where weare ikely toland. Manure is high as well as hay, and when we begin to look abont to see how we are tosupply the place of alarge heap of goed barn yard manure inthe springs itis not easy to tell how to do it at any reasonable rice. sa The good farmers of Connecticut valley, many of whom we kaow personally, find it tor ieiri Dlerest to buy a large amount of stock in the fail, and to buy grain from ne Westat bigh prices to feed out to it forthe sake of the manure. They may lose on the stock. Itmay sell for less in the spring, or, at any rate. for little more than they paid for it in the fall. They look to the crop which they can produce with the manure, te take upany loss they may sustain on the stock, and having tried it year alter year, they do notlook in vain. They have learned to put coufidence in manure, and every farmer who expects to prosper mast jearn the same lesson. Manure is the basis of the farmer's prosperity, and stock is the fertile source of mauure. it is, therefore, a short-sighted:policy to sell hay if itis possible to consume it’on the place with good, thrifty, growing stock. Much ot the stock in our barns 1s not of tis description, Wwe are sorry tosay. Some ofit will pay and pey well. Some of it will consume a good deal of hay and net pay atall. There is a vast difference between the two classes of stock in this respect. A cow that is really worth from seventy-five ton hundred dollars will pay bet ter im the jong run fer the food she consumes tha cow that is really worti: only forty or fifty dollars. In many cases a farmer had bet- ter psyeven more than the higher price, than to take the lower priced animal asa gift. The percentage of profit on tne one will be large, even with the present high prices of hay and fodder of ail Kinds. The other will pay no Rercentage whatever, and it may even cos, aboutas much as she is worth to fatien her. Whet we need more than anything, in our New England system of farmingis a higher and more protitable class of stock. Weare gradually coming toit. Twenty years of the present enterprise and spiritof improvement will make a great change. andthe pian we suggested of stocking our state and town farms with pure bred stock wili contribute more to bring avout this result than any other that we enn devise. 'p good stock, keep it well, and Winter as much of it as you can winter well. lt willpay better than to sell hay, Gavarni’s Lasr Stupies.—Gavarni, the late French artist, had a passion for aerosia- ties, and ike Leonardoda Vinci, bad the con- viction that aviation or the fly of the bird, was the principle and the alpha of aerial loco- motion.
