Loss or 1 By D TERS HURTING 1955.— Lt appears that during 1566 there were 45 rail- way accidents in the Usited States, in which lives were Jost, and in them 115 persons were killed and 607 wounded. This is a great im- provement over 1965, when there were 1} rail- road accidents, in which 335 persons were killed and 1,427 wounded: and it exhibits a less number of killed and woundea by such acci- dents, however, do not include any where per- sons were injured by their own carelessness. There were 23 steamboat accidents dar: 6 on the various rivers and lakes in the Unitea States, by which 633 persons were killed and 156 wounded. This t*a less number than oc- curred during 1565, for which year the report is 32 accidents, in which 1,76* persons were killed and 265 wounded, but it isa largernum- ber were reported for any previous year simce 1:54. These reports do not include loss of life by disasters at sea nor during naval en- gagements.
